- Hello, and thank you for watching.
Today’s topic: Is Tarbell the most valuable resource?
@jonahberg9280 asked,
Do you consider Tarbell to be the most valuable collection of books you own?
Hi Jonah, my friend and mentor Denny Haney used to say almost anything you want to know about magic: “It's in Tarbell!” In fact, he is so well known for saying that it’s on his tombstone, reminding us always, even into eternity, that if we want to know it, it’s probably in Tarbell.
The problem is you need to know what you are looking for, where to find it in Tarbell, and, once you find it, how to recognize it for what it is and put it to use. I struggle with that.
I am a highly visual person and even though Tarbell is heavily illustrated I have a hard time visualizing the effect from the illustrations provided. So, for years, Tarbell was an untapped resource that sat on my shelf. I knew what was there, but I struggled to mine it out.
This was the case UNTIL Dan Harlan released his Every Trick in the Book series on Penguin Magic.
Today’s generation has a resource I never had. Dan has done all the hard work for you.
Watch his videos, and then go to Tarbell to refine and clarify.
Now, it really is the definitive resource for everyone, even those like me who need a visual point of reference.
The short answer is yes, but only if you use it, and given the size and scope of the work, using it is daunting.
I hope you enjoy what you see here.
If you do, please subscribe and please comment.
I’d love to hear from you.

A great resource of magic to have 😊👍😊👍
Too frequently untapped and under utilized.
100% on point David! Thanks for the great reminder of how valuable Tarbell really is to the serious magic practitioner.
Thank you so much! I appreciate it
Another great video, David! I pieced together a full set of Tarbell by buying some used volumes. I think it was the index volume that I had to buy brand new. I also have a subscription to Dan Harland’s video series in which I pay Penguin Magic 19.95 per month and I receive one video every Friday. So it works out to $5 a video, or less if the month has five Fridays. I can download the videos I receive and keep them even if I end the subscription. I will end up with all the videos sometime in 2026. It’s a great series - I’m learning a lot.
I knew Penguin offered some special deals, but I think you got the best. That is arguably the best value in magic, and I am glad you are taking full advantage of it.
I recently downloaded all of Dan Harlan's Tarbell videos to supplement the books.
I think you will benefit greatly from studying the books and the videos together
Agreed!
Thank you!
Recently I saw Dan Harlan's presentation of "Snooty Snake" where the spring snake from the gag can of peanuts pops out to capture a chosen signed card in the snake's mouth. I took the time to create the same from Volume 4 page 113. The gang at two magic clubs where I performed it enjoyed it thoroughly! It was just another example of a hidden gem in Tarbell!
Tons of hidden gems in Tarbell, and that is a great story. Thanks for sharing it
Bought all of the books recently and am browsing through them in the evening as a side-study to Card College. I've already found a few great routines that I have performed for my students (high school teacher). When I spotted the needle trick I was convinced that it really does contain everthing. I'll be downloading Harlan based on your recommendation for the less obvious tricks. Thanks for uploading.
You will find an almost limitless resource for material between the pages of Tarbell and the videos of Dan Harlan
Penguin magic is known for strip mining those gold nuggets
Oh yeah I think so too
Do you have Denny Haney the collected wisdom ?
I do... ua-cam.com/video/rP4wVKe7wG8/v-deo.htmlsi=grbO502iGydNsIVm
Is greater magic on par with Tarbell?
In my opinion, no
