I’ve been listening to this cover for almost ten years now. All “holy shit, I’m ancient” thoughts aside, I still get goosebumps from “know all your enemies.”
"when you still believed in me" is the crux for me. i know everyone loves that part, i dont het it, i like the build up. i discovered NMH and mre importantly, Jason Molinas Songs Ohia/Magnolia Electric Co. very late...i may not have since i prefer my pain music loud and plodding, real modern punk like Tyvek, Hank Wood and the Hammerheads (if you read the lyrics you might dare use that emo word, but the music is pure punk with a james brown after the better part of a litre of whisky. anyway, probably shouldnt cover this song. never heard these guys and i suggest y'all check out the Marked Men/Radioactivity for pop punk as long as you dont mind the guys doing it are probably your dads age (or in his record collection). You wont look back. i wont pick on these guys, too easy. ill-advised cover.
Jesse Lacey is the reason I got into NMH in the first place. Somewhere along the way in reading about him and Brand New, I became aware that he was a big fan of something called Neutral Milk Hotel. So I started reading about them, and listened to Aeroplane, and became a fan. Since then, I'm proud to say I've seen Jeff live, with Julian Koster, which is the closest thing so far to a NMH reunion. Long story short, Jesse's done a lot to bring in new NMH fans. And he nailed this song. :)
Jesse Lacey can say "brains". He purposefully planted that. He's covered this song MANY times, does anyone seriously think he would mess that up THAT many times? This man is a lyrical genius.
You're giving him too much credit. He fucks up all of Jeff mangum songs that he does because he wants to be considered eccentric. He wants to live in his shoes. I've seen three of his concerts. He's done three different covers. He just thinks he knows better because he has no idea what the songs are actually about
He's a lyrical genius, but he's covering someone else's song and altering it. That makes him a lyrical genius for changing one word. Okay, he might be but him changing one word in this song does not make him a lyrical genius
I was there for this show and was absolutely blown away by this song, despite (at the time) not knowing it. It's a crazy pleasure to be introduced to NMH and ITAOTS by Jesse Lacey. I also love how he repurposed this song and made it his own -- especially with some lyrics.
Awesome! I never knew Jesse listens to NMH. NMH are one of my all time favorite bands & Two Headed Boy is one of the first songs I ever covered. I was like 15 at that time.
I didn't think anyone but Jeff Mangum could pull off this song. I guess Jesse Lacey just proved me wrong. Thanks so much for posting, this is one of my favorite songs.
I had never heard of Neutral Milk Hotel nor Jeff Mangum before, until Jesse Lacey had praised the band so much. Anyone who hates on Jesse Lacey because he covered one of his favorite songs is just ignorant and clueless. Get a job
Ok, gotta admit, this is well done. I'm always dreading the typical perfect singer/songwriter rendition, but he really did express the song really well.
Jesse lacey from brand new is an amazing song writer and composer. His favorite album is in the aeroplane. Put two and two together and u cant go wrong
@bklepacki28 He kept the first version of the song NOT because he sang in perfect pitch and NOT because his voice didn't crack once, but because he and his band members believed that the first take captured JUST the right amount of emotion to be distributed to other people. NMH fans appreciate the band not for musical talent, but for their artistic worth. If they wanted to sound perfect or if they wanted to prove their technical worth, I highly doubt they would have used a saw as an instrument.
love how the audience isnt singing along at all. 5:55 someone starts clapping thinking it was over. pleb tier audience blessed to have their emo show closed with the mangum.
Stop complaining about how he said "brain" instead of "breath". I thought it was "brain" too until recently. Many lyric sites say that the song says "brain" also. A simple misunderstanding.
@StarvingSound Yeah he does. Jeff Mangum says "lose your breath" and that does make sense. It's a poetic way of saying "die". "I'll be with you when you die." And it is meant to rhyme with "left".. which comes closer "breath" or "brain"?
@lynch03 i saw him in Philly and i talked to the guy who follows them around for myspace and asked him about changing lyrics. his response was he changes the lyrics depending on his mood and what hes thinking about on that day.
@bklepacki28 why one would dislike them, but I can also see why I like them. And even though they don't have the technical skill to be compared to Elliot Smith or Radiohead, the message their music sends is one that hits right where it aims with me. I can see that a lot of indie fans kind of put them to shame, but I genuinely have yet to find another band that can make me feel what they want me to as well as Mangum's. So again, I have to respectfully say that we have to agree to disagree. =]
@NASTY138 yeah effing amazing have you ever heard Play Crack the sky? its the last song on Deja entendu ( the greatest cd ever recorded) and its basicly all him accept like some backing guitar. freaking epic this guy is my muse
@LaptopHero ..... I'm not reading every single comment on here, so please help me understand and forgive my ignorance, ... you say you liked this before Mangum covered it. If he covered it then who's the original writer or performer...? And does someone know the true story and meaning behind the song? Or has that never been revealed. Thanks.
Everyone needs to stop the debate. He is playing a song that he likes. get over it. It doesn't matter. Jesse loves this song... he played this song. Big deal. If you don't like it, then don't like it. It's not like he is trying to say that his version is better or anything, he is just playing the song. He changed the lyrics... WHATEVER! It's a cover! Just because you love NMH doesn't mean you have to shit all over BN. Let the guy play a song he loves for gods sake!
@bklepacki28 We'll just have to agree to disagree. Haha I love Elliot Smith. Conor Oberst is great, but for some reason has never had the same emotional effect on me as Jeff Mangum. I suppose when the argument comes down to "which artist is better," there can be no further agreement. And "How to Disappear Completely" was at one point my favorite song. But I simply find some of Mangum's stuff more personally engaging. And I also find it to be the music I always wish to listen to. So, I can see
It is ten minutes later and I already regret getting angry. Haha My apologies to bklepacki. Everyone needs a good rant occasionally to stay sane, so, once again, my apologies. I gave the troll the biggest meal of its life. haha
Perfect....but I don't like how he changed the part "we know who our enemies are"....whitch is the part I prefer in the original song of neutral milk hotel.
I didn't like this song that much the first time I heard ITAOTS, but it really is an emotionally moving song. Definitely not one I would want to sing along with, but just listen intently.
I just don't understand why you go to a video of a band you don't like covering a band you don't like to comment so that everyone knows you don't like it.
i came in my pants upon finding this. one of my favourite bands covering one of my favourite songs by my favourite band. delicious.
gothfather, they got peanut butter in my chocolate! I liked Brand New before. I LOVED NMH. Now I love Brand New by proxy!😂😀😉
Nice Elliott Smith pfp

i watch this atleast 10 times a day
Why are we all glazing over the fact that he didn't play the Goldaline part?
favorite part of the song :(
Not all the way through the video and literally decided to stop watching because of that
@@vpxc yep came here specifically to here that part lol. Best part
maybe he had a fixed set time and didn't have enough time to play the whole song

Not that hard of a song to play or sing
@southrules do you have a video of yourself performing it all the way through?
Apart from some of the words being off (which can be attributed to Jeff's style of singing some vowels), this is really fantastic.
apart from the words being demented?

And then Thom Yorke shows up last minute.
