What a sight for sore eyes. Thanks for sharing your time with your father with us. You shared important information here-and not just gardening knowledge. A blessing in the garden.

Thank you very much!! Yesterday we mulched his garden beds and the walking area around the beds. He likes that a bunch too! Next up is an automated watering system. Stay tuned!!

I got my passion for gardening from my dad too. In the small towns we come from in Mexico everyone is either a rancher or farmer or a little bit of both.

Have you considered using pumice instead of perlite? And mulch on top? I run a raised bed indoors, I use mulch and cover crop on top. Low till I guess you could call it.

I have used perlite as opposed to vermiculite when it wasn't available. I've never used pumice. Have you had success with it? We will come back and mulch the beds. We are going to do that this weekend. My Dad has planted some plants from Clegg's Nursery but most were pretty bad off. Nevertheless, we are going to mulch those plants and the beds in general. If nothing else, it will keep the weeds at bay. Thanks for you recommendation!!

@LouisianaSimpleLiving yes pumice is the real deal! Its meant to last forever as where perlite will float up to the top and collapse. The longer you leave that soil untouched (no-till) the soil food web can establish itself stronger and stronger if you're mindful of microbes and the macro/micro nutes.

@@ohmimprovement5767 I will have to look into pumice. I'm 100% in agreement on no tilling. I haven't tilled any soil since starting raised beds many years ago. Thanks for the comments!!!
