@@owlredshift There would only be two scenarios where "life support" at the gateway will be required, routine supply or emergency supply. If the supply of life support expendables (air, food, water, etc.) for a mission depended on docking with the Lunar Gateway, it adds a layer of complexity that can be avoided by having all the supplies necessary on board the crewed spaceship. True, it would make for a lighter crewed spaceship to launch and send to the gateway, but remember, these supplies will also need to be launched and sent to dock with the gateway. Launching two spaceships instead of one will be far more expensive and difficult. In an emergency situation, the gateway will not be in an orbit close to the Moon and any spaceship experiencing an emergency will not be able to get there any quicker. Far better to send a crewed spaceship on the most direct orbit to reach the surface of the Moon (if that is the mission) and put it in a position where it can return quickly.
Why is this needed ? They are sending Orion to Lunar orbit with astronauts where it will dock with the HLS. All 4 astronauts will go to the Lunar surface then back to the Orion which will return to Earth. Gateway not needed. For that matter, the Orion is only needed for its heat shield.

Read carefully. "HLS *ascent* element undocks". The HLS has already served it purpose and at this point, it's useless. It's simply cheaper to launch a new one than to refuel the ascent element and send another descent element.
@@silversurfer3202 We must discuss more. I can't believe this idea hasn't already been killed off. It has already gone much further than it should have.
They are still not sure what the hls will look like as companies are still developing their vehicles. I'm guessing they omitted using the starship because it would have completely dwarfed the gateway.
If you look at the video closely, apart from the building of the Lunar Gateway itself, none of it is ncessary for lunar missions. Even if we accept that you need three elements like those shown in the video (Logistics Unit, Human Lander and Return Capsule), and none of these elements have been shown to require the slow elongated orbit the LG does, especially for the human component of the missions, all of these "transfers" can be achieved by docking the components together, not to a third element llike the Lunar Gateway. If the "Logistics Module" is there to service the Gateway itself, it is even sillier.
this seem rather stupid. all that time wasted in orbit could be spend building a base on the moon. you are just putting a target for solar flare, if you get hit by one that short out the electronic, what you going to do? leave the crew on the moon hanging until replacement part reach the gateway? it is unnecessary risk.

I guess so. Clue : most of it is pointing towards deep space.

Why HLS undocks without any crew? Shouldn't it be refueled and just reused?
The whole Lunar Gateway thing has not been thought through.

The HLS is going to be the lunar starship so idk if they manage to bring that much methane and liquid oxygen to the gateway
