I'm lucky enough to own the Epiphone Les Paul Custom- Adam Jones Veil of Bees, an Epiphone Custom Jerry Cantrell Wino and now an Epiphone Slash Vermillion Burst.
All 3 of these guitars combined cost less than my Gibson Les Paul Standard 60's. And they're all great.

I just ordered one of these from sweetwater. They said they've been having supply issues with the tuners. They do usually use the grovers. I also had locking tuners installed and I'm having the plek done. I should get it next week

Purchased one of these (used 2021 model, white) a few weeks ago and have done some digging since purchasing.
These new Epiphones are all mahogany, no maple. This is actually more accurate to the original run of Gibson LP Customs than todays modern Gibson LP Customs. The originals were solid mahogany and they started adding maple later.
Epiphone are in the process of switching from Grover tuners to Wilkinson. I think this started with the 2023 guitars. Apparently they make no difference. I can't really say as mine is a 2021 and has Grovers.
My custom was bought to fill a hole. I was lucky enough to own a 2011 Gibson Les Paul Traditional for a time. Unfortunately, I had to sell it to raise some funds and missed it dearly. This definitely scratches the itch.
Theres a couple of videos that I'd recommend on this subject. George V Guitars' video comparing the latest Epiphone and Gibson Les Paul Customs. Also, Five Watt World's Short History of the Les Paul Custom.

I bought an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro (Ebony) from Sweetwater about 10 years ago. I too had it PLEK'd. Well worth it - Makes such a difference. It's been my number 1 rock guitar ever since. I use extra light strings on it (9 gauge high E). I like the sound of the stock ProBuckers as much if not more than the Burstbuckers Gibson puts on a $3000 LP Standard. And unlike the Gibson LP Studio and Tribute guitars.I had for a while, it holds tune very well.

  • @77fonebone

I liked mine enough to pay for a full plek on it to make it even more perfect. I have dropped 57's in it and also put locking tuners, but not really a hit on the stock stuff which was great too.

The new Epiphone LP Customs might actually be the best LP thing you can get for less than a thousand dollars. The Epiphone Headstock have grown on me especially the customs but I still wish Gibson would just use the Open Book on the Epiphones like the old Japanese ones. Fender puts their real headstock shape on everything they own besides Gretsch but a fender headstock would look pretty silly on a Gretsch huh ? I actually think I prefer the older clipped Epiphone headstock to the newest version but they can probably get away with a little less nut detail work as opposed to the open book so maybe that’s why?

    • @dillonjamesxp

I have a white and a silverburst Epiphone LP Custom. Both play great but the Silverburst sounds way stronger for some reason. I know they're supposed to be the same pickups, just different plating. The White has the Wilkinson's and the Silverburst has Grover's, I was told it was due to supply chain issues.
I traded my Epiphone 1959 LP Outfit for the Silverburst and haven't looked back. There wasn't anything wrong with the 1959, but there was just no bond. I think the LP Custom might be Epiphone's best LP. Easily the best value. My Epi SG Custom isn't bad either.
    Nice review!

Looks like the Matt Heafy guitar I played a while back (was awesome, but really really heavy). I love my Epiphone V (Jeff Waters Signature Annihilation V). They are great guitars! Given their costs and playability they stand apart and miles ahead of Gibson guitars. Gibson costs are reflection of diminishing returns. More for less. Epiphone is always a win. I think that's just a fact.

Yes those are excellent Las Paul's for the money,
Compare the exact guitar in a Gibson, they are around $7800 Canadian as compared to $1150 Canadian for the Epiphone. FUCK the Gibson, you can buy 8 or more great guitars from Epiphone depending on which high end Epiphones you choose to buy.

    • @dillonjamesxp
      @dillonjamesxp  10 місяців тому

To be fair, I kinda prefer Gibson's neck profile over Epiphone's and there's a few really good Gibsons that are still relatively affordable like the Tribute Satin. But yeah, Epiphone's definitely the way to go for affordability and QC.

Elitist snob, much? If a guitar makes someone happy, the name on the headstock is irrelevant. I don’t buy a guitar because I’m concerned about it’s resale value, I buy a guitar because it sounds good to my ears and I’m happy while playing it. To me, those are the most important thing about a guitar. Names don’t matter.

Hilarious . . . these sorts of comments tend to pop up now and then. I have owned a 1968 Gibson LP Custom and played it extensively live and in the studio since the early 70s. I like it. It's a good guitar. I have played the Epiphone LP Custom a few times in the shop and can attest that I like it. It's a good guitar. (Prefer the black one, not mad on the white). Maybe the guy who posted this comment isn't aware that the Epiphone factory in China is owned by Gibson (with the requisite local partners) and is staffed by US Gibson employees and is subject to the various labour laws a US company has to adhere to in the PRC. Whatever . . . I bought the Cantrell 'Wino' over the Epi Custom because I liked the colour - simple as that. I already own a nice black Custom and the 'Wino' ticks all the boxes for me - I will be modding it with Monty's Bethnal Greens because I want a LP that gives me 'that sound'. I may still buy the Custom - the body and neck specs match the original Gibson and I really enjoyed playing it in the shop - at the price it's too good of an opportunity to miss, frankly. And, I played a few of the recent Gibsons, Standards & Customs they had - all nice but not really worth 3 or 4 or 5 times the price, unless 'resale' is your mantra when buying a guitar. I actually buy guitars to play, not because of where they're made and not to resell . . . maybe that's unusual? 🤣

I got hold of one of these secondhand a couple of months ago and it definitely scratched my Gibson itch..I just couldn't justify spending megabucks on the real thing. This way I have a guitar that looks and sounds the part at a fraction of the cost. Only the gear snobs will even know the difference and I can gig it without worrying too much about it getting damaged or stolen.

    • @ryansizemore7237

Who buys a guitar for the resale value? Actual musicians buy what they like, not the name that everyone likes
