In 2020 Gijs Idema won the Conservatorium Talent Award in Holland. The chairman of the jury then spoke with praise: “Gijs does what he likes. He is musically as playful as he is mature.”
Since picking up a guitar for the first time at the age of 11, Gijs Idema’s love for the instrument has never stopped. After taking an initial interest in pop & rock music, Gijs became interested in jazz and other improvised music, taking a particular liking to players such as Wes Montgomery, and Charlie Parker. It was at this point that Gijs decided to play and compose music for the rest of his life.
For his bachelor's degree, Gijs studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he graduated with the highest honors. Shortly after his graduation, he moved to New York City, where he is currently pursuing his master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music, while regularly performing around the city.
Gijs likes to write new pieces for his trio: “I am often amazed at the originality, new ideas and textures that Cas and Tim add to such a composition. A completely different side of the piece is often highlighted than what I had taken into account myself. This gives plenty of inspiration to improvise about.”
