The Reality of Rescue | Matthias' Story

- Matthias was a beautiful Belgian Draft that came to Horse Plus through the April Buy Out. He was estimated to be around 8 to10 years-old and 19 hands tall. Matthias was noticeably underweight and had a wound on his left front leg that, luckily, was not infected. Radiographs also revealed that there were no significant bony changes, so our veterinarians performed a debridement surgery to allow healthy tissue to grow back. After his surgery, Matthias' leg began to slowly heal, but our veterinarians noticed he was beginning to show signs of facial paralysis, as his lip began drooping and deviating to the right. He also began crossing over (incoordination) his back legs when walking. They were concerned that Matthias could have EPM, or Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis. This is a neurological disease that horses get from ingesting parasite eggs called sporocysts, from Opossum feces. Horses don't necessarily eat the feces, but the sporocysts will crawl to other places, especially in grass. Unfortunately, after running a test, our veterinarians confirmed Matthias had EPM. Although there are medications that can help treat this disease, the symptoms can rapidly progress and cause permanent neurological deficits. In Matthias' case, he became unable to control his lips and was losing the ability to grab food. Therefore, he couldn't eat appropriately and began losing weight. The EPM symptoms had progressed so fast, that the treatments available would not be able to repair the paralysis already happening. There was nothing our veterinarians could do to increase Matthias' quality of life, therefore, he was given the Last Act of Kindness. This is the reality of rescue work and why we think it is important for you to see both sides to our rescue work.

Rest in Peace Matthias, God has called you home to roam in pastures green and lush Just walk over the rainbow bridge and don't look back your work is done time to rest God bless the Vets and keep giving them the strength to save lives and heal their hearts when they have to give the last act of kindness to animals. This was an emotional episode but it needed to be told so that owners will take care of their animals and have the good sense to do the right thing when needed and those who are abusive or neglectful will have the lords judgement to look forward to when their time comes. Keep up the good fight to protect and defend the animals who cannot speak for themselves, but also be gentle in judgement it is not always as easy as you think to take the life of an animal when love is the issue. Horse Plus Humane Society have the most golden of hearts they are the angels for these animals and God bless you all for trying to save these beautiful animals that i love so much.
Rest in peace Matthias you gentle of giants, Run wild and free with the wind.
I’m so sorry to hear that Matthias’ health issues were so severe that the Last Act of Kindness was the only way to prevent further suffering. His time at Horse Plus was filled with love, kindness and vet care. Rest in peace Matthias. ❤❤❤
Poor gentle Matthias. Angels will be with you in the green pastures of the Rainbow Bridge; no more pain or suffering for you precious boy.😢😢💔
❤❤❤❤❤
🪽🐴 ❤. He knew kindness before he left this world. We should all hope for that.
Run Matthias Run as fast as you can in pastures of Valhalla. Those pastures are forever green and lush. The water is sweet and cool. Free from pain and neglect. At the rainbow 🌈 bridge there are those who await your journey there. They want to run and play and be your friend. RUN MATTHIAS RUN
Beautiful comment. Thank you.
you mean the pastures of HEAVEN!!

Oh man!! Why did you have to post this lovely poem??
It made me start bawling all over again. It's a beautiful poem.
Hugs to Dr Gina and Dr Lydia, I can't even imagine how you cope with the heartbreak of what you have to do, knowing that if the horse had been cared for properly by its original owers it would have been treatable and able to live out its life.
he had the sweetest eyes 😭 RIP beautiful boy
Poor Matthias. Dr. Gina, thank you for giving us such a thorough explanation for the necessity of the last act of kindness in his case.
Matthias was a warrior, but everything was just stacked against him. Your team tried so hard to save him. Thank you for not letting him suffer needlessly.
How heartbreaking, to heal his leg, learn to love him, then have to let him go.
So sad that Mitthias was unable to be saved. Especially after his debridment/surgery to heal his leg wound. EPM is a terrible thing. Thank you Dr. Lydia, Dr. Gina, and the rest of the staff for all your love, kindness, and hard work. I was hopeful for him as Dr. Lydia was so smitten with him, that he would one day go home with her.
“I was hopeful for him too as Dr Lydia was so smitten with him that he would one day go home with her.
WORDS ARE NEVER RIGHT. MY HEART ACHES, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I AM SO GRATEFUL THAT YOU COULD SAVE HIM BY RELEASING HIM. GOD BLESS YOU ALL. YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS DAILY 💖, LYNN
That was a great explanation of EPM. Sometimes the outcomes are not what you want but a realistic assessment of a good life is the right decision. Dr. Lydia and Dr. Gina are doing a great job.
Matthias was so sweet, and so young too! Let him run the evergreen pastures forever in peace, and free of suffering.
This is so sad, yet I’m happy he’s free of suffering.
As much as i appreciate what you wonderful people do, i couldn't continue watching this video knowing that this beautiful boys life came to an end😢😢
I am glad Matthias had such loving care and was given everything reasonable for his quality of life, well done, he had his best chance.
He is a stunning horse. Thank you for trying, Horse Plus . This is enormously sad after the surgery ( beautifully performed). His wonderful temperment is special. Wish i could have seen him. Sending tears and love 🎉😊
God speed, big guy! I'm so glad you knew love.
Tears. Such a big beautiful boy
No not Matthias 😭 I know you did the best thing for him....but i'm just broken. I like so many people will and are so sad that he couldn't live a full horsey life, and enjoyed the love he deserved. 💔 Thank you for giving Matthias love even though it was a short .... he knew.
Thank you for blurring the actual wound. I couldn't take it. God bless the volunteers that can handle it. Angels.
don't be sad please-- this horse as all, want you to remember them in their GLORY!!
So sad but Mathias is no longer suffering and that is the best that could be done.
RIP Matthias 🙏🏻
Oh sweet Matthias... And to the vets, this must really have been a tough one. I know you make tough decisions every day, but you worked so hard for Matthias. Sending you love and hugs. And tissues.
Let him run the skies forever, free of pain and suffering. Let him run free in the evergreen pastures up above.
Thank you for trying ❤ Also for not letting the Big man suffer. You All are so Amazing ❤✌️
I am so sorry he got hit with this double whammy. His leg was doing so good. I know it had to be so hard on your hearts after trying to heal him up! 💔 My Prayers go out to all of you too healing your hearts 💕 . Much respect! May God bless you all!
Fly freee Matthias.
RIP sweet Matthias. ❤️
You guys did a wonderful job on caring for Matthias and made the right choice to let him go gently
I got so attached to him after losing my own Belgian draft last year. So sad 😭
What a beautiful special boy❤ I wish he could have lived a long and happy life😢💔
Bought an elderly Standardbred mare and the 1st thing she did on thanks was to injure a front leg. It was a very nasty cut bu we took care of it immediately and kept it bandaged as long as needed so she healed nicely with a barely noticeable scar. Didn't even need to bother the vet. If you care for it immediately the animal will not have a problem. Thus mare was estimated to be 28 years old so age does not matter. Mathias was a young horse so there is absolutely NO excuse for this. Please be happy in horse heaven.
He was a goodest boy, for sure. Thanks for working hard, and knowing what is best for him. ❤
This is so sad. To have had the prospect of a good life after having been through so much is a heartbreaking end.
Bless the people who cared for this gentle soul Matthias
R.I.P Matthias
Such a beautiful soul. Heartbreaking.
Poor guy... he was beautiful 🙏❤️
I don't know what's more heartbreaking, the ones who need the last act of kindness right off the trailers, or the ones like Matthias who seemingly had a chance but it just didn't work. 💔
Sad that it was too late.☹☹
Thanks belong to our wonderful vet team!!! You are all truly angels and you go way above and beyond in your love for and care of the animals!!! Been here and a supporter for a few years now and I say without reservation, that HPHS currently has the best team in their existence!!!! From a few new folks that are already standing out to the fantastic video team to our utterly phenomenal veterinary docs/group, and everyone in between, y'all are just rocking it! I'm so sad you had to send beautiful, gentle Matthias on his way to his new pain free life over the 🌈 bridge (as he will be missed) but I applaud the kindness with which the decision was made. Y'all ALWAYS do what is best for the animals and that's why this gal happily and loudly supports you always!!!! 🌺💗Janice
RIP Beautiful Giant 🌈
So sorry for the loss. On homestead horsemanship they have Oliver. He had emp and fully recovered last year. Please start testing for this dreadful disease sooner. I understand that it has spread thur alot of horse in East of USA. But Oliver was much worse and not even 2 yet. This horse is older with leg wound. Unfortunately odds were against him.. please have staff be very observant of this bad disease. He was stupendous. May he be in horse heaven running and playing with friends and loved ones there.❤❤❤
Thank you for not letting this sweet boy suffer needlessly. He deserved the love he got from you all the way to the Rainbow Bridge where he’s running free and healthy in tall green grass….😢😢 RIP Matthias 😭
Very sad. Thanks for his great care and love. ❤
What a poor luck, such a nice and well behave horse. Being rescued and having healed from a bad leg wound, he grabs grass with infected feces. How a terrible fate. RIP Mathias
❤❤much love to staff at HP that took the time to help him. ❤❤
Beautiful Matthias. ❤ run free big guy!
Poor boy, this was so sad to watch. Rest easy young Matthias 💔
I had big hopes for this beautiful big boy 🥲 thanks to HPHS he knew love, kindness and compassion
Poor boy. We love you 💔
Poor Matthias. But he was able to spend his last weeks in a beautiful place, among people who cared for him. And his passing was painless.
May he run free and painless in heaven Matthias is a warrior and is worthy of his name. Live free you gentle giant. Thank you all for giving him 💕 and every chance possible. You guys are unsung heroes on this earth!
So sadden by this, he was such a sweet beautiful boy!!! ❤❤😢😢
That was so sad. He was well loved while with you.
Poor sweet boy. 💔
rest in peace my dear Matthia.
After all that work on his leg and then this poor guy gets EPM. Dr.Gina, thanks for explaining the treatment and symptoms. It was really sad watching Matthias' deficits in walking and eating. Sure is sad to see him go down hill in the end. Thanks for loving him and blessing him with the last act of kindness.❤️
I am so so sorry😢! All the hard work and loving care Matthias received prior to his passing was so heartfelt and heartwarming! This video did make me cry, he was such a gorgeous gentle boy! I am sorry!
Lisa
After spending tons of money to treat a horse with EPM (I didn't wait to test as was done with Mathias), I am surprised that he wasn't tested much earlier.
Yes, the test costs several hundred dollars, but my horse recovered because of early intervention.
Thank you for caring for him and loving him to the end. ❤
Thankyou for showing him what was possibly the only kindness he had ever known x
Thank you for giving this beautiful horse a chanse. Run free big guy.
How sad! I love Belgians 😭
😭
R.I.P. mein lieber Mathias❤❤❤.

I love what you all do. You are amazing people.
Matthias stood out to me from the intake video and I was eager to see every update about him. I was devastated when I found out that he couldn't be saved. Thankyou for making this video dedicated to him.
Mathias was on my wish list. RIP.
Oh no. A most beautiful horse.
You girls are bad A$$$$😊 sending love to you all and Matthis❤
TY for trying to save him!!
So sad what a sweet horse.
Beautiful Matthias, just beyond the veil you’ve gone, given freedom from “The Last Act of Kindness!” You run free Matthias we will all catch you to you someday for hugs and snuggles! You are just beyond the veil, some see you, we all love you! Amen! Thank you all for sharing this beautiful horse’s story. Thank you for the video. ❤
You all did what you could do and for this I thank you and I think you made the right call. It is too bad, but you are right again. If he could not eat right the best thing to do was to put Matthias down. Thank you all for doing God's work and thanks for sharing. Have a nice safe day!!!
Sooo sorry, rest in pease sweet boy...well meet in heavven😢

Wow! I was wondering about Matthias a while ago and forgot to check back.
Your vets are heros.
I'm sorry this big goofy sweetheart was sick with EPM. You tried so hard! He was looking so much more healthy after all the original work you did for him. Im so sorry for your loss!!💔 I swear he was one one the cutest draught horses Ive ever seen. 🙋🏼♀️💕
😢 I'm so sorry Mathias 😢
Poor boy...so sad for him...and condolences to all at HPHS for all your hard work to have such a disappointing outcome for Mathias...😢
What a heartbreaking outcome for this sweet animal.
I'm so sorry that you had to give the last act of kindness to that gentle, handsome boy.
I lost my youngest horse Skipper to EPM...put her down day after Christmas a few years ago....horrible time...she was 24 years...she foaled from my gray horse...
❤
Oh, your organization does such a comprehensive effort to rescue, rehab and rehome
forgotten horses. Watching his tender and thorough care then knowing the outcome
brought tears to my eyes. He was such a stunning draft horse. So thank you so much
for the wonderful care and love bestowed on this magnificent horse.
😥❤❤❤
I have never viewed a site that was so detailed, so caring, so incredibly knowledgeable and full of heart. Thank you for giving Matthias all the love and care he deserved. 💛
Beautiful Matthias!! You are so majestic!! Please welcome my beautiful 14 yr old cat Fiona, who we gave the last act of kindness on Wednesday after NO illness but having fast breathing for 12 hrs to be diagnosed with severe congestive heart failure!!
Then her13 yr old sister, Elkie, with end stage renal disease, will receive the last act of kindness soon too. She is having an end of life assessment with the vet Monday. We are so broken!😿😿
***Fiona did not respond to the medications given to try to get the fluid from her lungs.
Poor boy, I was hoping he was gonna get healthy as Dr. Lydia seemed drawn to him immediately. I bet she would have taken this boy into her family if things had been different. EPM is just awful, it really needs to be addressed asap or else the outlook is not good. I watched Homestead Horsemanship when they bought a young Clydesdale gelding at auction and then found he wasn't just skinny but had EPM. They raised a lot of money to pay for the expensive drugs to treat him and it was touch and go for months. Luckily they and their vet pulled him through and now he is growing beautifully, and started in pulling and more and he is a stallion that they are now expecting a first foal from him in the fall. If you want to see the journey of EPM, go to Homestead Horsemanship channel and look for the start of the journey. The horse's name is Oliver.
I miss seeing the full intake of the horses in the biouts
This is one of the saddest ones I’ve seen! Sweet boy! You can be Jesus’s steed!
Thank you for trying 😢
