I like how they didn’t glamorize the lifestyle in this film like they did with films like the godfather, casino, and goodfellas, which are some of the greatest movies ever. This film was cold dark and mean the way that lifestyle really is and that’s what makes it unique and in some ways better.
this song captures moments of the movie so perfectly. i think at times it shows the guilt donnie had for betraying lefty. even the pity for lefty because he was screwed over by almost everyone, his family, mob, and donnie
..under rated movie still.. sad but one of johnny's best too..and Johnny is back in a crime movie again, but this time on the other side as a crime boss in Black Mass..can't wait to see that
They captured a glimmer of hope when Lefty met the guy in Florida for the club. Lefty was so happy when there was a chance he could possibly earn and make the kind of money he felt he deserved. Donnie(Johnny Depp) was so happy for him but knew deep inside that Sonny Black would take any profits for the Acting Boss of the family. Again leaving Lefty in lurch
I like two pieces of music by Patrick Doyle. This one and the other is the soundtrack to "Carlito's Way". Both have a very poignant, melancholic feel but very beautiful at the same time . . .
Underrated movie - Pacino & Depp give 'all time' performances in this. It has rewatch value too - can come back and watch this every couple of years and enjoy it just as much as the first time.
I was at the movie theatre and everyone started crying when lefty put his watch and money and his drawer. This old man was crying like a baby real loud, the whole movie theatre could hear it!It was like a funural.
This is one the best scores in all mafia movie history!!!It´s sounds so mellow & filled with lament & treachery.Which is how Donnie Brasco felt at the end of the movie
This is one of the most beautiful pieces of classical music I have ever heard recorded. The musical tension of the notes of the music, especially at the beginning is what makes this music so important. Do not think that just because this piece of music was recorded for a mafia movie should subtract from it’s importance. Tom Sisson

I remember seeing this film at the cinema and thinking what beautifully sad sounding music and wracking my brains later about where I've heard that sort of style before. Then it hit me - Carlito's Way. Whad'ya know, same guy - Patrick Doyle. Both Movies seem to be deepened by the soundtrack so much that the tragedy is enhanced ten-fold. Composer was right on the money. Great job. Like Howard Shore's The Fly
The movie has very emotional and meaningful scenes.. one of the best projects of Pacino and Depp:)) also not only them, everyone in this movie did a great job, thanks!! Patrick Doyle also did the score for Carlito's Way. Both scores sound similarly beautiful. Both have an Adagio for Strings sound that makes it so melancholy.
I can feel triumph and pain all at the same time when i hear this song. Every time its like i am listening to this for the first time . living a hard life is something im very familiar with.
I have this in my playlists and it strikes me as a classical composer's piece. Every time I hear it, I forget it's from Donnie Brasco and I assume it's written by the classics. Amazing movie score.
The reason why one of the best movies in the history of cinema comes from crime drama/Mafia genre because these films explore the theme of power, loyality, friendship, love, betrayal, guilt which are relatable for most people. The realism in the story is brought by the characters inspired from real life. And also the real life inspired stories portrayed by these characters are able to catch people's emotions. Moreover some of these films also reveals the faults in society and corruption in the system and its effect on common man as well as people who become a victim. These movies also cover the struggles within a family very closely and how family members get impacted from the crime, corruption , love and betrayal. Despite being a movie based on life of Mafias but the major focus of the film makes is to focus on showing deeper human emotions.
Same here. I just got started, though. Any recommendations? I've seen Goodfellas, The Irishman, Donnie Brasco (so far my favorite), The Godfather Part 1... mean to watch Scarface next.

Once we have a system that provides, rather than divides, we shall all be able to love each other without the stress, deception, & chiseling off one another. I urge people to study the venus project. It is so far from happening, & we need help spreading it. Before its too late.
Yeah, for me especially lefty, when they saw the FBI arrest Donnie for certain reasons, and when they were talking about Donnie aka Joe, Lefty thinks they were still lying
That look on lefty's face as he's putting all his stuff in the drawer, and then as he walks out the door...talk about a conflicted soul, couldnt believe Donnie duped him, but he was also glad it was him. He really did love "Donnie" like a son. Great underrated movie
Interesting that you mention that scene. I was half expecting Lefty to feed his aquarium fish a last time, which I think would have been great.
In real life, Lefty was actually acting this scene to represent Sonny Black. Sonny died for the sake of his word and what he stand for.
