HOW TO STOP RUSHING THE DOWNSWING WITH THE DRIVER
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- In this video Chris looks at the downswing with the driver and shows you how he recently helped a client who was rushing the downswing and hitting from the top.
This caused him to be too quick in his transition, loose timing and distance.
By focusing on the transition you can also improve your timing, tempo and distance from the tee

Chris this makes so much sense to me I know that when my swing is off I get to quick with my transition and start topping the ball and by then I’m so frustrated It’s hard to get back on track
exactly what happens to me also
Great stuff. Well that explains why when I take a full swing I hit the ball less distance than my half swing. Rushing the story of my life.
Best golf coaching on You Tube. Bar none.
Wow thanks so much 👍
Thanks for the excellent lesson Chris it looks so easy but man I don't know why it is so hard to do for most of us just feels weird to slow it down to me
Totally agree Chris! I also find that not only has the distance improved, but accuracy has improved. When I try and hit it hard, I actually loose distance and find myself off the fairway. Hitting the ball on average 255-260 metres straight compared to 240-245 metres in trees!
I've been trying to increase my swing speed a few mph which resulted in loss of control - now I know why. Great tip Chris.
This will definitely help my swing speed...excellent explanation.
Chris,
I just wanted to say you are a fantastic teacher. You have a great way of explaining the topics you cover and you are direct and to the point. Thumbs up sir!
Thanks appreciate that and glad the videos help
Bingo. Exactly what I've been struggling with on the big stick. Noticed from a video that I was applying all my force at the top and applying pressure. Think this contributes to early extension too to try and balance out that force at the top of the swing. Going to really focus on slowing it down.
Going to the range right after work!
Aah that's my problem...aswell as the out to in the bad grip and the crap clubs. I'll work on this tomorrow 👍
This is a big issue for me! Thank you for this insight
Another great video Chris, thank you
Thanks Phil
This is an absolute Game Changer for me Chris. Results where dramatic and immediate. Keep Up The Great Work all the way from Sunny Oz 🇦🇺
Awesome, great to hear Steve 👍
Hi Chris. Thanks for another great video. Yesterday, I tried your suggestion to slow down the start of the downsing and it had immediate results in that i hid the ball farther and more consistently. I also scored 42 points in a stapleford competion which i have never done before.
Wow Roger that’s great to hear, really glad the video helped 👍
Hey Chris awesome advice once again, hope you can make more videos of how to increase speed at the bottom of the swing. This is something I am working on.
Thank you for explaining the swing speed creating more heads and ball speed.
Great video. Great breakdown club head speed > power arms Happens all the time. I think ppl all do this because of hockey and baseball instincts Kickin. Because most of us started playing those over golf
Will give this a go on the range tomorrow. Top vid thanks Chris.
Thanks Kev hope it helps
Great video. If anything is missing it is that one must understand the concept of "firing your wrists" and letting all that lag explode at impact. Something that is hard to gauge for many I think
So much easier to hold "lag" and not cast the club to early when you slow down, not to mention how much better contact is. Everybody wants to hit it like Rory, but a swing like Corey Connors can be more effective for most people. Great video. Overlooked by others.
Thanks Bob, and yes I’d definitely love to have Rory’s swing as I’m sure we all would, but he is super human 👍
Awesome tip! I've been fighting this for as long as I've been playing.
Thanks Bob hope it helps
Great tip i thought by swinging faster i'd get more distance instead i started to sky and slice the ball which i didn't do before.Keep the tips coming they're really helping.Cheers.
Thanks Steve, yes the key is to have the speed at the right part of the swing, hope this helps
wow great vid
Yep, definitely gonna give this a go.
Your swing is so smooth and perfect!
Very well explained as usual. This is something I need to work on.
Spain again. I didn't realize they had so many beautiful golf courses!
Thanks for the video, Chris!
It’s by no means perfect Bob, but appreciate the kind words. This is a superb course, one of Spains finest 👍
Kudos Chris
Really useful video Chris. I’ll be trying this out next time I’m at the range.
So awesome
Thank You.Very good Video.
🇮🇪👏 Ireland.
Really useful tip, many thanks
What a good "go to" tough. I know this video was done a long time ago but I have a question if you can answer it. Applying this concept will I beleive give me more distance/club head speed I'm sure and also way more control and consistancy. Can I extrapolate that after doing so the next step can be to better my shoulder turn? I'm far from being paralell (65 years old and less flexible) thru some flexibility exercises? All and all without never rushing it down...Thanks, Luc
Good advice I think I tend to rush the backswing when I am looking for distance , I am playing today and I will make a conscious effort
to slow it down, and see what happens
Thanks Rob, and yes the pace of the backswing can really influence this 👍
Great tip Chris. Will try to put that in my swing.
Thanks Randy hope it helps 👍
Do you have any drills to help slow yourself down in downswing. My hands have always been quick due to baseball and my front arm doesn’t stay locked throughout the swing because of baseball. I try to slow it up but due to muscle memory, my hands still are too quick. Thanks I’m for any help and great video 👍
I like the "accelerate arms+hands" late in downswing is a new way of looking at it. So how does one go abt doing it ? Any drills ? The only one I can think of is the "hideki" complete stop at the top move. That will mostly make one accelerate much later.
Think this will definitely help me my drives are poor for distance get me to the range
Hope it helps Malcolm
this is epic Chris Ryan - way to go!
Hi Chris, love your videos. Just a quick one, where is you weight on your feet for Driver and irons?- Thanks Mike
Also helps the club shallow I would imagine ⛳
I forget who told me this. It might have been you. But I was told the hips and the hands are in a race and I need to give the hips a head start but make sure the hands catch up.
Unfortunately I can’t take credit for that one, but love the analogy
similar to something attributed to Jack Nicklaus ua-cam.com/video/KceztwOBV8I/v-deo.html
Cheers for this, been searching for "how do you start the golf downswing head" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Penamillorn Peerless Prevalence - (search on google ) ? It is a good exclusive guide for discovering how to learn an effective golf swing method minus the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my brother in law got great success with it.
Hi Chris, can this drill be used in the iron swing too? Cheers
How do I generate more force into hands and club after slower first phase of downswing ?
That is a gorgeous golf hole.
Could this be why my miss is a hook? Too fast too quick on downswing
Great lesson .... I fall into this trap all the time as I try and SMASH that little while pill ...... when this happens, I find counting (in my head) 1,2,3 on my backswing and a very slow 4 for my downswing helps keep my drives relatively straight.
Yeah love that idea of using numbers or words
Thanks Chris, very useful for a beginner like me. My driver keep fade or slice because of outside in during downswing. How do i fix it? Cheers.
Thanks Ted, I released a vidoe a few weeks back in how to fix a slice, may be worth a watch 👍
Thank You.🇮🇪👍
Thanks Carmel
Would a rushed swing contribute to a slice? I find myself rushing my driver downswing and although make good contact, the resulting shot shape is a big push/slice. Looking forward to giving this drill a try next range session.
It certainly can do yes
So any tips for the "idiots" who know all of this but still cannot keep from whacking at the ball from the top been struggeling with this for 20 years
Great video Chris, does this apply to the iron swing as well?
Yes the same would apply 👍
Chris , do you think about increasing your hand speed at the bottom of the swing, or does it happen automatically?
For me it’s pretty automatic, but for some it will have to be a conscious effort
I think thats my driver problem...great with my irons..tend to rush the driver....then brings in the over the top move..
Same idea with irons too Chris, o is there a fundamental difference?
The same would apply John 👍
Probably explains why when I try to rip it. It doesn't go as far as consistantly as when I don't try as hard. When I swing effortlessly and easy I'm usually amazed at how far it goes and think it was just a lucky shot.
That would certainly make sense Jamie, hope this helps
Hi Chris how far do you drive a ball
Hey Anthony, a typical on course drive is around the 300 mark 👍
My problem is at the course. At the range, I can bit long and straight with the driver or other clubs.....but I clearly rush and bypass synchronization with the flow of my body at the course....resulting in all kinds of bad shots. Need to really work on staying in touch with proper tempo and rhythm.
Would that stop me from hitting the ground with my irons you think?
Hey Jan, it could do, poor tempo can affect strike
What's the location of your golf school/class?
Hi William, they vary, hold some in the UK and some in Europe, usually Spain and Portugal, but 2020 venues have not yet been finalised
looks cool but need to try Chris i need to tell u something regarding this video plz reply whr shall i drop the msg Instagram or Twitter for direct conversation
You can use either of those platforms and I’ll pick it up 👍
thing is its soo very hard to resist whacking at the ball from the top seems like my brain power has been severely dimished when i am at top of back swing
best instructor on youtube.
Rushing the swing when trying to swing with power has been causing me to go over the top ever since I started golf. I think my problem is the opposite of the person described in the video, though. My hips and body go too fast from the top, leave my arms behind and drag them into an over-the-top position.
Excellent
is this the wossh drill
Yeah very similar
