Hey Lucy, I don't know if you will be porting in Key West at all, but if you do....there is a CVS (large US drugstore) where you should be able to get all your cosmetics, conditioner, etc. at the same prices you would expect to spend in Miami. Go to the end of the port area, turn left, and walk about 2 blocks. Great for American tourists who discover what they have forgotten to bring as well!
Wow! Your vacation seems to have flown right by! And I was super interested in your use of coconut oil. I'm involved in my family's coconut farm, you see, raising coconuts chiefly for oil. And the going rate today for coconut meat, AKA copra, is 78 US cents per kilo, which is fair. Now, I'll have to look into what coconut oil costs here, and get back to you. Curiosity overwhelms me! I have a question about payment. I know that as a crew member you receive a card from a bank account that your payment is going to be deposit there (at least for what I`ve read in the contract from the company I`ll be working on, Starboard). My question is, when you finish contract what happens to this account? Are you obligatedd to send the rest of the money to other bank account?
Fala, First off, I do not know the exact answer for you (and I hope someone with the real-world experience in that, such as Lucy, will give you a definitive answer)....but, I will try to help. You SHOULD have another account to transfer your money / pay into (as Lucy said, primarily so you don't spend it all while on-contract....and, to make transferring/sending money elsewhere easy), but if, after a short vacation, you are continuing on with another contract with the same company, you might be able to do without another account? My advice is to have a look at some of her videos on "budget", "how much I spent", "how much I saved", etc., because Lucy does address this matter. Until you get the definitive answer from Lucy (or from another current cruiseline crew member), I hope this helps. :)
Hi Lucy! Does Royal have any lugagge restrictions on size/weight? Or just the airline? I'm joining soon and I need to buy my suitcase before I get my plane ticket so I wont know the airline restrictions, and I can't find any measures online about Royal acceptinging sizes. Matilde, I cannot speak about Royal Caribbean speifically, but as a traveler that has limited space on-board to stow luggage, in addition to a recommendation to go with "standard" sizes luggage (not the largest size), my advice is: 1) Absolutely, take cases that "nest" inside each other when empty (and/or collapse altogether) so that they take up as little space as possible! (some travelers like one hard case and one soft/duffel....some like two semi-soft "nestable" cases.) Remember that your cabin will be small, and you'll likely have a roommate, and you'll need to stow your case(s) in your room where there is little space to do so. 2) Split-up your clothes, shoes, etc. into two cases. This is primarily so if one case is lost/delayed in transit, you will still have somethings until it arrives. (but, this also allows you to "distribute" the weight better, to make handling / transporting the cases easier, which can also mean they are less likely to be "lost" as they are less likely to topple-over, fall-off a trolley/cart, or be "too heavy" for someone to lift onto a ramp/belt, etc...I've personally seen this happen, where a luggage-handler is unwilling to lift a bag that they deem "too-heavy"....and have seen some folks in airports whose bags are so un-balanced / over-stuffed that they are just as likely to fall onto the tarmac as they are to get loaded on-board a plane!) 3) Buy / bring the smallest cases that you can easily fit all your items into, and not "over-stuff" / not "over-load" them....as this (along with advice #1 above) reduces the space taken up by your stowed luggage in your cabin. FYI, I'm one of those "always be prepared" types, who usually packs too much, so I do understand that it is darn easy to give this advice, but can be very difficult to live by it. ha ha :) {btw, although I'm not on a ship...just general common sense / courtesy will tell you that you'll likely be moving into a small cabin with a roommate who is already living in there, so the less disruption of their life you cause / the less space you intrude into ---- the better your roommate vibe will be! Remember, that old saying that "You never get a Second Chance, to make a First Impression!" So, the advice to have smaller / nestable / collapsible luggage is both selfish and selfless! :) } 4) Finally, just like any travel by airline these days, when you need to work the next day (or same day) after your arrival, be sure to take one or two days worth of work clothes / uniform with you in your "carry-on" luggage, along with toothbrush/toothpaste/etc. Because, you don't want to have show-up for work in shorts/t-shirt/flip-flops, just 'cuz you "packed everything into your big checked-in luggage" and it's been delayed. :( Not, a great first impression to make. Galveston is the worst for getting your i95 if you've never done a contract/never been to the US before. Took me 6 weeks to get mine! Should've been 5 but we had shoreleave/immigration cancelled the week I should've got it because a guest was missing/jumped overboard. It was definitely frustrating as it wasn't something mentioned before I joined, I'd assumed that having the C1D visa would be enough.

I don’t know about Europe, but here in the US, a certain large, well-known internet retailer with South American connections is pushing hard to do deliveries to lockboxes in specific locations. If you need a particular brand of something from them, you might be able to purchase online and have it delivered to a lockbox near Virgin’s dock in Miami. That could simplify your shopping days when you’re in port. FWIW. .
Cecil, et al, For information to all, regarding Amazon order pick-up, etc....if you can get off the ship in Miami (embarkation day, etc.) in addition to CVS Pharmacy / Beauty store (and a Whole Foods Market) nearby, there are Amazon Hub Lockers in a few locations, very near the Miami Cruise Port. (actually there is also one inside the Carnival Cruise Terminal, but I think you have to be a Carnival passenger or crew to access it?) Just a short 5 minute Uber ride, or a 20 - 30 minute walk (just over the bridge and then about a half-mile south), are a few Amazon Hub Lockers in a few stores, with the ones in Whole Foods Market (at 299 SE 3rd St, Miami, FL) being open 8am - 8pm, 7 days/week....and the CVS store is right next door. Also, I know that ships crew can get deliveries to their ship's agent in their port (this is the way snail mail used to be delivered to seamen, you know), but I'm not sure how easy/efficient it is for someone that just wants a few bottles of shampoo/conditioner. :) 'Cuz, with instant on-line shopping, Amazon, fulfillment centers, same-day/next-day, etc. etc., the world has changed a bit. :) Not sure if this will be of any use, but wishing you all fair winds and following seas! Thanks for the educative posts. I was hired Harding's and got my US visa, how Long does it to get to board for I have not gotten assigned for medicals or stcw yet.
It all depends....it can be as short as a few weeks, or as long as a few months. Lucy has commented that if you hear nothing after one month, you should get in touch with them (Harding, or your agency) just to be sure they are working on getting you on-board. I hope this helps? My rule I have for myself when packing for contracts, If its items I can replace there I don't buy additional at home to take with me otherwise it takes to much space and adds unnecessary weight to my luggage, luckily for someone like myself 9 times out of ten I can get off when in homeports so If I need to get replacements of anything I can go to target or Walmart.

Do you have to pack everything in your checked luggage on your flight or can you ship some ahead to be waiting at the ship on arrival? I ask because I assume you'll be flying in to Miami. A lot of what you showed us wouldn't be allowed in carry-on luggage in the US.
Are you allowed to buy things off the ship during the contract and bring them back on? What are the guidelines for that? Like is there certain ounces or something that you aren’t allowed to go past?
Jillian, Although different cruise lines and different ships, may have different rules, most will not have restrictions on your bringing a full bottle of conditioner or shampoo, on-board. :) So, if you're asking along the lines of TSA liquid restrictions such as "no more than 100mil (3.4oz) of any liquid", I'm fairly certain the answer is no, there aren't those restrictions. But, most (all?) cruise lines / ships DO have strict rules regarding what you can bring on-board. (such as no hazardous materials, no cleaning products, etc.) And, you should ask your ship representative / recruiter / etc for the specific details. Also, please be aware that most (all?) do NOT allow liquor / spirits to be brought on-board. And, most have a strict rule, allowing only ONE bottle of wine / champagne to be brought on-board, whether you are crew or passenger (and, some cruise lines / some ports may not even allow that?). I know merchant seaman who have said that this is strictly enforced, due to safety rules. {oh, and remember, as crew/staff you are restricted to a maximum blood-alcohol-level of 0.05% at any time you are off-duty....and, of course 0.00% when on-duty...} So, in regards to buying some shampoo / conditioner on-shore and bringing it on-board, I believe you'd be good-to-go. :) I hope this helps.
