So, Date was the first clan I used in my very first campaign and I have a story to tell. It all went well until I got to where the Uesugi/Takeda/Hojo start: once I captured those I wanted to capture the Honma island to the north for the gold, so I built a port in the Uesugi capital and moved my strongest army and general, the daimyo's brother, and another smaller army with no general on 2 ships and land them both safe. The next turn I attack the castle thinking I would surely win with an overwhelming army but when I look to the enemy army preview on the bottom right before the battle I see MY general's face backing up the enemy army and was like "WTF? How did this happen?". The bastard had betrayed me and I took a massive hit to my strenghy since I had no army anymore. This happened because I still didn't know how honour and loyalty worked being my first campaign, so it took a long time for me to build a new army, conquer the island and kill the traitor
you forgot to mention having to chase the rebels around the map for the first year or so... my army could never reach them and they just crossed the river to the south and went up the other side. turned into a not very funny benny hill sketch
my army never quite reaches for some reason on the first turn, but im gonna give it another try later this evening. thanks for all the videos by the way, ive played this game for years but you've really helped my game
Here you can see me doing it on turn 1, time-stamped and all: ua-cam.com/video/JgknQIP4j2U/v-deo.htmlm30s Another thing, if you're ever in a situation where your army isn't quite in range, but they'd be close enough to reinforce, just move out your general, they have more movement points than any other unit, especially in the late game. They'll make up the rest of the ground and the rest of your army will just reinforce and pop up right behind you on the battle map.

Damn, these videos just make me want to jump into the Date clan right away, even though I'll probs watch another video of another clan and jump into that clan, w/o ever finishing a campaign. Nice video, MrSD! Gotta definitely try those out.
Playing the Date Campaign and after 50 turns I've expanded down to Echigo and Fukushima. Have crushed the Mogami and with the combined effort of our clan and the Hojo have defeated the Uesugi. Now the Hojo have broken their alliance with me and are caught up in a 3-way war with the Takada and Ikko ikki, the latter which is now at war with me. For the Date, it's difficult to secure trade agreements with other clans for some reason. I've never been dishonorable and it was originally the Hojo who requested a military alliance with me but everyone finds my request for a trade agreement unacceptable, even though i have access to stone, iron and wood. The fact that the Date have that +2 charge bonus is why I have yet to loss a battle. Ikki ikko's Ashigaru stacks are no match for a Date charge from any of my units and despite being 2-3 times outnumbered, the enemies thankfully don't bunch up and allow me to defeat them in detail with my smaller force before retreating back to the safety of a setttlement. Having to only deal with one front is immensly huge for the Date which allows me to build markets and gambling halls back at Iwate while my settlements closest to the other clans are filled wirh training dojos. Despite having no trade, my economy is gradually building with every art branch I unlock and so long as I don't overspend on my army. I am currently fielding one professional army that consists of mainly no-dachi, bow sam and a couple yari and cavalry units for supports and chasing down archers. All in all, a great campaign so far.
I see that a little bit late, but... other clans don't trade with you because of high difficulty (from hard and hier). They initially much more aggressive to you.

One good strategy for the first turns is to engage with the rebels and purposefully let them escape so that you can take them down again and get your general level-up, giving you more map movement from the get-go.
One thing that’s pretty satisfying to do is to set up a defensive army with mainly monk archers. Have Naginata samurai on the front lines, and Nodachi’s in the back along with maybe a few monks and/or cavalry. Let the enemy come hit your wall of Naginatas after being peppered by arrows, and then have them be insta broken by a Nodachi charge and Monk warcry. After that, just destroy all the other archers and other units the enemy have. They’re break quick. It’s basically the ultimate counter attack setup.

Nice, Dates bonuses are great and I love their color scheme. In my campaign I had enough time to conquer my southern neighbor before moving north, and by then the mogami and the uesugi were too busy with each other to notice me building my army.
My first clan and I won campaign with Date. Charge bonus allowed me to kill generals easily with light cavalry. Massive land provides money and food. No enemy in the north means my battle direction is linear, all way to south. And one of the craziest thing I ever done in all Total war games is that first battle I fought against the Oda who were stronger than me at the time, that one battle both sides had 2 armies of 20 and 1 army of 10. It was a mess, Total bloodbath. I won the battle with heavy casualties plus death of brother, but I did NOT lose a single non general unit. That one battle I killed Oda's entire elite armies and generals. I easily crushed Oda after that battle. I felt the power of the Date. Oda invaded me with their elite troops but they got nothing but death.
Not every battle can be won easily you know. It was a battle that had to be done. Defeating their elite army means I won’t have to face strong resistance from them anymore. Even it means losing half of my army.
One of the best campaigns I ever had in Shogun 2. I lost Harumune early in the game while fighting Takeda Shingen. Falling into regency was hard as most of my generals had dubious loyalty. It was a slugfest all throughout; against the Takeda, the Ikko-Ikki Shogunate and the Otomo. It was fun to use 6-7 Nodachi as your main battle line.
My knowledge of other TW games is far inferior though. I have started doing them on Warhammer although the views for that were pretty horrible, so I'm not sure how much more I'd do of that.

I personally call them Masters of YOLO, you can get away with recruiting quite a lot of no dachi, activate Banzai and charge balls deep into enemy lines. That's why I also get damage upgrades at capital and no dachi just melt everything they charge into. Provinces in the east are big, but fertile and you can only go west, so there's a profit of easy expansion (though it's somewhat slow).
From what I know, Date Masamune was known for convincing his foes to switch sides before major battles, a very clever and shrewd tactic if I say so myself. Not the best fighter but what he achieved he did through methods no other lord thought of making him a legend in his own right.
Kinda late, but I'm pretty sure why the +2 charge isn't carried over into custom battle, but the Hattori vanguard deployment is. The Date in the campaign use the base unit roster (except for no-dachi ofcourse). However the Hattori have a unique version of each unit, giving it higher cost en the vanguard deployment. In the custom battle the campaign unit roster is used.
You can attack Ugo immediately or after one round where u produce the most of the soldiers that take only one round. After that you march forward and there are two cities that are only one move away from each other. There you garrison one half of a full army in each which will reduce uprising possibilities and it costs less to have only half an army in each city instead of a full one because whenever there is an attack...you can just move the troop from one city to the other to have a full army for defence. After that expansion is easy. I love Date, you can go apeshit with them and do some massive wrecking.
i preffer to use my no dachi samurai as a vanguard whenever i attack , shock troops historicaly led charges instead of merely supporting thme (in game what this means is that players typicaly avoid head on charges with shock infantry) , my mentality is quite simple , date clan ashigaru support the no dachi samurai not vice versa , oda clan , samurai support their superior ashigaru units not vice versa etc etc , shock action by its nature is expected to suffer relatively heavy cassualties
Nothing like seeing your Nagatana samurai get punted by cavalry like a football before getting up and cutting them to pieces with a superior charge bonus iirc with proving grounds it’s just shy of 50 throw in a well timed BANZAI and they can pretty much charge through and break an entire army without stopping
SO waht determines when your sons 'come of age'? Date here has an 18 year old who is not of age, but in my Shimazu campaign, my damn sons come of age and are Generals as young as 13 and 14. Other things ive long wondered about this game. Do your units suffer massively when you order an attack while they are all moving, say through a castle gate and are not formed up yet, but in order to prevent them being attacked in the flank by defending castle units, you order an attack, meeting the full unit with a straggling in unit? Alot of little things like that ive never known about this game, but ive always wondered about.
May I ask which one's better for the Date campaign, melee attack or armour? during your shimazu campaign you upgraded their armour, however date have iron from the get go and you'll get superior melee attack in no time. But still, date no-dachi have only 2 armor. Although I always play "defense" and once the AI army got close Ill "banzai" charge them head on so their bows not gonna have much time to attack, but still I gotta ask. Thank You!
For me it depends on the army composition rather than the clan you're playing. If you're using a lot of No-Dachi Melee Attack is probably the way to, go but if you use them defensively they might take a few more arrow volleys in which case the increased armour is better. Could always do a bit of both, upgrade the blacksmith to either armour or melee attack and then increase the encampment to the opposite.
Hey, I'm curious, do you have any videos on how to engage in land battles or can you give me some valuable tips to make things easier? I suck at land battles but excel in naval war
Watch little youtube documentaries from "Historia civilis",he covers formations in his videos about battles. Watch the ones on Greek and Roman battles. He'll teach you how to use spear walls, cavalry, and sword infantry. All warfare is pretty basic when simplified and broken down.
I generally use Ashigaru spear walls as my center, with 5 or 6 bow units to harass, and 4 units of sword samurai protecting my flanks. Most of the time i don't even need cavalry, but they are nics to take out the enemy bowmen and chase down routing troops.
You don't, but you should never fight offensive sieges anyway, this is my #1 tip for anyone ever. DO NOT fight offensive sieges, just siege out the enemy, not only does it mean you're not fighting a really annoying battle where you lose far more men than needed, but also the enemy takes attrition, and you get to fight a defensive field battle, which is the best type of battle.
They're not really an issue, you can generally just sit inside, quickly kill the enemies infantry off and go outside to kill the archers, or have your cavalry do that. You could even sally out immediately during battle once you know where the enemy is coming from, and just charge them.
Great video again, i loving the shogun 2 overview series, and only a small hint in japan the letter U you read IU, so the pronunciantion will be IUZEN or IUGO, this is the same for W that you read UA, like in Wakaso is pronounce like UAKASO, i think i help you if that thank you.

Hoang Nhat Nguyen if the bulletproof samurai manage to close the gap, then no. especially if they use rapid advance. if you can keep them at bay, then the knockback still affects bulletproof samurai.
Vardeus but the encyclopedia doesn't mention Christianity as a requirement for the ships, although it does mention Buddhism as a requirement for the monks.. have you tried it?

My knowledge of other TW games is far inferior though. I have started doing them on Warhammer although the views for that were pretty horrible, so I'm not sure how much more I'd do of that.
Can't wait till you get to Fall of Samurai.
Date clan tactics: F1+F3
@@mrbencroft8251 a soul brother! I greet you swadian brother! Have fun in the knight charge 😁✨
@@bloodangelsberserker1876 Best faction, except when you fight Rhodoks. Charging uphill under crossbow fire, then getting greeted by glaives, cleavers and hammers is still a bit difficult to endure
Edit: and the board shields. Goddamn, shattering those is hard. Luckily AI is stupid and at least the crossbows keep them on the back only. Sergeants are another story
@@mrbencroft8251 but at the end the holy tactics of F1+F3 will always be victorious! Maybe a bloody victory but who cares knights are born for the charge they love it 😁 its like fullfilling your soul✨thats why i like date they understand this to 😁
@@bloodangelsberserker1876 I also like the Date because they feel like heresy era world eaters on table top. You get the charge, you murder all.
Edit: much like ikko and hojo. They feel like XVII legion and IV/VII legion respectively. Many parallels to be drawn with other clans and legions too
@@mrbencroft8251 aaaaah i see you are a very culturated man aswell! Iam very pleased. Yup the ikko ikki are pure chaos worshippers 🤣 i always call them chaos cultists but the XVII. Legion is also very fitting. For hojo they never really were a big trouble so i cant really tell😅 uesugi is like the emperor cult or pre heresy XVII.(if there was really a time you can tell the XVII was something like pre heresy, they were always heretics🤣)
Anfor the World Eaters...i hate them for what they become xD before knowing about the lore they were my favorites after reading the horus heresy i just hate them 😂blood angels are way better in any persoective fck chaos FOR THE EMPEROR!
The way he said BANZAI got me dead
I personally call them Masters of YOLO, you can get away with recruiting quite a lot of no dachi, activate Banzai and charge balls deep into enemy lines. That's why I also get damage upgrades at capital and no dachi just melt everything they charge into. Provinces in the east are big, but fertile and you can only go west, so there's a profit of easy expansion (though it's somewhat slow).
It really does feel like YOLO, since if the enemy can hold after your initial charge you're pretty much screwed
Date and Takeda are the clans I had the most fun with in Battle.
Amazing overview! Banzai!
Im playing Date rn and yeh the No Dachi Samurai basically every battle they charge banzi and whatever they just ran at is dead like immediately
ARE YOU READY, GUYS?!
do the Uesugi clan
dude u need to make a fall of the samurai faction review like this one
From what I know, Date Masamune was known for convincing his foes to switch sides before major battles, a very clever and shrewd tactic if I say so myself. Not the best fighter but what he achieved he did through methods no other lord thought of making him a legend in his own right.
I love your channel.
My long awaited episode has come if you don't know what clan u want to do next plz do Hojo
Dude..
is it just me or date starts off in the wrong spot
They start in Nanbu's spot, they should take southern Mutsu not the north
Are you going to do Rise and Fall of the Samurai?
Kinda late, but I'm pretty sure why the +2 charge isn't carried over into custom battle, but the Hattori vanguard deployment is. The Date in the campaign use the base unit roster (except for no-dachi ofcourse). However the Hattori have a unique version of each unit, giving it higher cost en the vanguard deployment. In the custom battle the campaign unit roster is used.

“Sadly she is a girl and doesn’t do much for you”
Based.
Tip, you can also wait out the Mogami. Around turn 4 they will wander into your borders, if you lay an ambush there, and defeat them you can push on.
That's essentially what I said in the video.
***** Well you said you'd push up to them, right?
I said wait in the forest just inside your or their province, and they'll likely walk into your ambush. 2:35
Ah okay, must've drifted past my ears, as the Daimyo like to say ;)
You can attack Ugo immediately or after one round where u produce the most of the soldiers that take only one round. After that you march forward and there are two cities that are only one move away from each other. There you garrison one half of a full army in each which will reduce uprising possibilities and it costs less to have only half an army in each city instead of a full one because whenever there is an attack...you can just move the troop from one city to the other to have a full army for defence. After that expansion is easy. I love Date, you can go apeshit with them and do some massive wrecking.
i preffer to use my no dachi samurai as a vanguard whenever i attack , shock troops historicaly led charges instead of merely supporting thme (in game what this means is that players typicaly avoid head on charges with shock infantry) , my mentality is quite simple , date clan ashigaru support the no dachi samurai not vice versa , oda clan , samurai support their superior ashigaru units not vice versa etc etc , shock action by its nature is expected to suffer relatively heavy cassualties
badass
Shame they don’t buff yari samurai. Feels like it would fit them thematically.
Thanks for it!
Mori next, pls, i love ships!!!
Question:
If you recruit Date No-Dachi Samurai with a proving grounds, will they get the charge bonus?
Yeah, every unit gets the charge bonus from the proving grounds.
Thanks
SO waht determines when your sons 'come of age'? Date here has an 18 year old who is not of age, but in my Shimazu campaign, my damn sons come of age and are Generals as young as 13 and 14.
Other things ive long wondered about this game. Do your units suffer massively when you order an attack while they are all moving, say through a castle gate and are not formed up yet, but in order to prevent them being attacked in the flank by defending castle units, you order an attack, meeting the full unit with a straggling in unit? Alot of little things like that ive never known about this game, but ive always wondered about.
masters of the bonzi *brings up gattling guns etc.* now try that they will be cut down before they even get close. :P
a redo of the last scene of the movie "the last samourai" ...
Do you got tips on Tokugawa campaign gameplay
is takeda still your favourite clan to use?
I'd say so, yeah.
thanks for reply. I love your commentary. I havent moved on to rise or fall of samurai but they look good too
lol that intro is amazing
what is that flat battlefield you use in showcase battles?
From the top of my head, I believe it is called "Rice Fields".
in battle did some samurai cut rheir opponents head off after battle?
Does Date still don't have their charge bonus for custom multiplayer battles now?
There is no joke about date, or rather joke about players or users being lonely and don't attending at ones.
Do a overview on other clans with modded pls that are in the campeign
Which blacksmith is the better choice in your opinion?
Depends on the type of army you're going for.
Are you Dutch by any chance?
You are correct.
I thought so XD
Great video btw!
MrSmartDonkeyLP are u going to do chosokabe next
I am going to do whatever gets suggested the most next.
***** ok
Could always do a bit of both, upgrade the blacksmith to either armour or melee attack and then increase the encampment to the opposite.
should've put in cod waw BANZAIIII js
Date, Masters of TENNO HEIKA BANZAIIII
They're also a very pretty blue and gold
Caveman Samurai, gotta love em
YOU HAVE DONE THE DATE PROUD!
That all-melee roster looks interesting, but how do you fight siege battles with it?
You don't, but you should never fight offensive sieges anyway, this is my #1 tip for anyone ever. DO NOT fight offensive sieges, just siege out the enemy, not only does it mean you're not fighting a really annoying battle where you lose far more men than needed, but also the enemy takes attrition, and you get to fight a defensive field battle, which is the best type of battle.
Mmm, and siege defences?
They're not really an issue, you can generally just sit inside, quickly kill the enemies infantry off and go outside to kill the archers, or have your cavalry do that. You could even sally out immediately during battle once you know where the enemy is coming from, and just charge them.
So the bulletproof units. If one of the four dies, can I recruit it again or is it lost forever?
You can recruit a new one yes. It's just a limit of 4 you can have at any time.
What's this song in the background???!!
BANZAI!
Where is Date Masamune? where is Takeda Katsuyori? i played with takeda and katsuyori was never born, i don't know if it's the same with Date.
yes; i played date 2 times. no Date Masamune in the family.
are these unit bonuses present during multiplayer campaign?
You mean a co-op/h2h campaign, yes they are.
MrSmartDonkeyLP that's great to hear. Thanks!
Imagine, samurais those can charge stronger than cavalry...
Best clan imo
Please do Chosokabe
How do you get the bulletproof samurai ?
forge you need the saint and heroes dlc
It's actually the Sengoku Jidai Unit Pack DLC, but ghost22 had the right idea.
MrSmartDonkeyLP ok thanks
best clan. thanks for the overview
for date no dachi is it better to upgrade attack or armour
Just banzai, man
attack
I have a soft spot for Date cause there's a good chance I'm related to them.
Uesugi next!
dusted off this game and played Date. The second brother came of age and had a negative campaign map movement trait. Then when he got some experience, he got another movement penalty. come on man lol
Can the Shimazu heavy gunners beat the Bulletproof samurai?
Hoang Nhat Nguyen if the bulletproof samurai manage to close the gap, then no. especially if they use rapid advance. if you can keep them at bay, then the knockback still affects bulletproof samurai.
Uesugi pls I have been waiting since this series started and I actually waited for the Ikko Ikki but it happen so I have something to bitch about. Lol
I only chose to play as them because they are at the very end of Japanese island
The King In The North!
I wonder wheres date masamune
can a buddhist clan recruit nanban trade ships from a captured nanban quarter?
No. Your clan must be christian. Same applies the other way of course, you can't get warrior monks from a buddhist temple as christian.
Vardeus but the encyclopedia doesn't mention Christianity as a requirement for the ships, although it does mention Buddhism as a requirement for the monks.. have you tried it?
Don't know for sure about the monks, but I know for sure you can not get cannon or nanban trade ships without Christianity.
Yeah i tried it. In the first versions of S2 it was possible to recruit the ships even if you happened to be buddhist, but that was obviously too good.
Vardeus thanks!!
62 CHARGE BONUS BANNNZAIIIIII
Masters of BANZAAAAAAAAAAAIIIII!!!!
please uesugi next
But... Date has more years in the short campaign!
Kristianthedane that was to compensate for the fact that they start on the extreme north end of Japan, and the fact that they take 3 to 4 turns to move to provinces from their home province.
Date all the way
uesugi pls
Man, how does you game look so amazing! I have a few years old computer, and graphics look horrible, even set on high. Even those clan videos, horrible AA, horrible textures, no effects, and you have even all sorts of grass and other eye candy going on...
