    I'm always impressed when I see a Chrysler that's more than 5 years old and isn't falling apart.

      The older ones were actually ok if maintained (not Toyota quality) but the new ones…..

      @@Retrosupercar I'll never forget my buddy blowing up his 92 white lebaron. It started sputtering and he floored it and BOOOM the motor blew and they scraped it.
      I suspect his wasn't maintained.

      My dad just gave away if 04 PT Cruiser in November. Original owner, had 470k midwest miles on it when it finally conked out on him. Tow truck driver bought it for 200 bucks. 2.4 4-banger never rebuilt. 1 clutch replacement..
      Cars last, even newer ones. The problem is average people want a car they can treat like a total piece of crap
      and apparently some hold up to that punishment better than others… Although I’d argue those same people usually trade cars off too soon to know if they actually last or not so opinions get skewed.

  • @IgoZoom1
    @IgoZoom1 13 днів тому

    You've gotta love that blood red interior! My best friend got a '84 Laser XE Turbo in 1990, when he was only 15. It was Brown/Bronze with Tan Leather, Digital Dash, Electronic Voice Alert and it was 5-speed manual. It had 130k miles when he got it, but within 5k miles it started overheating regularly. The head gasket blew and his mechanic said the turbocharger was toast as well. The 5-speed manual would "lose" 3rd/4th gear most of the time, effectively making it a 3-speed. It limped along until 142k miles, when he decided to sell it for parts instead of fix it. We've been best friends for 37 years now and we still talk about that car!

    • @Retrosupercar
      @Retrosupercar  13 днів тому +1

      It sounds like he suffered the consequences of using regular grade gasoline (destroys head gaskets) and conventional motor oil (burns up turbos), most likely from the previous owner. I also replaced my head gasket shortly after I obtained the car and the previous owner admitted to using the cheapest fuel/oil... Regarding the transmission, Chrysler actually switched to recommending people use 10w30 motor oil in them rather than gear oil. Apparently they last much longer with it.

    • @IgoZoom1
      @IgoZoom1 13 днів тому

      @@Retrosupercar That’s very interesting. So was premium fuel recommended or required? Also interesting about the transmission. I drove Hondas with manuals for 15 years and they just required motor oil. I used Castol Syntex in the engine, so I did the same in the transmission and never had a problem. My 2006 Mazda3 (which I’ve owned since new) is the first car I’ve had that specifies gear oil. So I’ve been using get oil..but I had to replace the transmission at 190k miles. Wonder if it would have fared better with motor oil?

    • @Retrosupercar
      @Retrosupercar  13 днів тому

      @@IgoZoom1 I’m pretty sure the owners manual states that premium fuel is required. I know for a fact that synthetic motor oil is listed as required. The problem was as these cars got older people started using them as beaters/cheap transportation. As a consequence they would they would use cheap gas/oil with predictable results. This lead to the belief that these cars were unreliable. When properly maintained these cars were bulletproof. I had an 89 Dodge Caravan turbo that was running 20lbs of boost (8lbs is stock). It made it to 225k miles on the motor with stock internals without an issue until it got wrecked.

    • @IgoZoom1
      @IgoZoom1 12 днів тому

      @@Retrosupercar I knew the 2.2T was reliable at least from '86 on, but I just assumed the '84-'85 Turbos were trash. But they were technologically advanced engines and it makes more sense that they didn't respond well to neglect, rather than being innately unreliable. Ad I know first hand that the non-turbo 2.2 and 2.5 are 200k+ engines because I've known several.

      Yes, someone bought it new in 1985, put it in storage in 1988 and almost never touched it. When I obtained it, the tires had a 1987 manufacture date. Of course, this meant that just about all the seals and rubber components needed to be replaced but now the car looks almost brand new.

    Really beautiful looking Laser. Surprisingly Chrysler actual made more Lasers than Daytonas but I always thought they were harder to find. I had a new Daytona turbo back in 84' and have had a few others over the decades. Currently have a 84' Daytona turbo z with 58k orig. one owner miles from VA. You never see any of these cars anymore, of any gen. Take good care of it and enjoy it. 👍

    Crazy to think that they made like 147,000 of these and now they almost are extinct

    • @Retrosupercar
      @Retrosupercar  27 днів тому

      It took me many months of searching to find one. Supposedly there are only about 12 Lasers still registered in California, I imagine other states have fewer numbers. I also saw a post, which I cannot verify, that stated that out of around 3 million K and G body cars made, less than 15000 remain actively registered.

    • @dukeboy09
      @dukeboy09 27 днів тому +2

      @@Retrosupercar I’ve even been looking for Daytonas to raise the odds of finding one but they are even hard to find , at least the early ones are, not a huge fan of the facelift versions that came later
      But I don’t doubt that claim one bit I can’t remember the last time I saw a K car
      That seems to be a trend with all the 80s Chryslers .. mass produced and now almost extinct no matter the model
      Last summer I bought a 1987 Chrysler fifth Avenue with only 55k miles on it not exactly a car that’s on people’s radar lol but it was cheap & in mint condition couldn’t pass it up because of the quirky nature of it
      It gets so many comments it’s hilarious 😂 I never imagined anyone would pay much attention to it but people always say “wow I haven’t seen one these in nice shape in forever!”
      But anyways beautiful collection you have my friend ! Love the Ferraris also ❤️ enjoy all of your sweet rides !

    I had the same car many years ago including that red interior. Interesting factoid… I once power shifted into 5th gear racing a car on the freeway. After the shift, it had spur sound on acceleration in 5th gear. You can replace the fifth gear, and fifths gear only, by just removing the side cover on the trans. That one gear is exposed and you can just punch out the drift pin and slide gear set off. Easy repair haha

    I need to mention one small detail about the Laser that annoyed me so much- the steering wheel is so out of place! That's the same wheel as my grandma's '85 Dodge Diplomat and so many other Mopar products. The '84 Daytona had an ugly four spoke wheel, but for '85 it got a unique 3-spoke wheel (reminded me of the Camaro's steering wheel from the same time). I know they were tight on development funds and getting the big things right was what mattered, so steering wheels weren't a top priority. But it just sticks out like a sore thumb...and causes flashbacks of that '85 Diplomat!
