I have no true experience playing a harmonica intently, however after coming back to this song after some years (Indian Moon by State Radio) I purchased my first harmonica in the key of G today. I hope to build a good relationship with the instrument and play the solos in this song someday. Wish me luck!

Got a cheap Silver Creek in G, Seydel Low G and a Golden Melody in G. Probably get a low F next to get Gm and Dm. Sums up most the instruments I get, it's usually in G, D or A. Usually I get G's until I need D's then since I got D's I might as well get A's, and try not to go by fifths in the other direction. Just bought a Suzuki FolkMaster so I can have a C.
Thank you very much! I was debating whether to get my next harmonica in key of A or G after having my first harmonica in key of C, and your video has helped me make my decision 😊.
A is an extremely useful harp to have because there are so many songs you can play along with in E. But I absolutely adore the sound of a G. It’s got a lovely deep, rich tone. It’s also great for chugging and vamping - the chords sound great.
I'm don't know much in the world of harmonica but I've been playing the piano for about 10 years. I feel like jumping straight to a chromatic harmonica. I want to learn to play jazz on the harmonica. What harmonica can you recommend me that is great under $100-150 is there any that specifically resemble a piano?
I been trying to find a Non-Slider Seydel chromatic and found one in Bb and not in C for a good price... hmm, should I get the Bb as my first harmonica or keep looking for a C? or might the more unusual Bb be a great choice as is on a better price right now? I am NOT looking for a beginner instrument but a great and uniqone like the Non-Slider... I am only asking about the key right now, what might be the pros and cons of going with a Bb if you only have one Harmonica for quite some time in a chromatic harmonica? thanks for helping out! :)
Hello. There is a lot of tunes when Bb is more useful than C. When it comes to jazz music, it's written more often in Bb, F than C/G. Trumpets and Sax are often in the key of Bb, so harmonica in this key for this kind of music is as good as C. The only cons are: not as many materials to learn from, you have to learn how to transcribe sheet music fast, and you may strugle in the keys that are easy to play on the C harmonica. If it is really good deal, go for the Bb, you'd have to learn how to play in all 12 keys anyway if you play chromatic.

Your analyze the sound of harmonicas is quite perfect! Thanks a lot. I would like to buy a harmonica with a thick velvety sound, but not a hohner, it has copper reeds and it confuses me because they are short-lived if played intensively, can you recommend a model perhaps among the Chinese harmonices?
Hey! I don't have any chinese harps, so I can't help in that matter. Chinese producers of harmonicas steal patents & forbid their endorsers of criticizing chinese government, that's why I don't buy there. I would go for Seydels, Lee Oskars, or Suzuki. Seydel has some harps in their offer with steel reeds, the most affordable is Session Steel, really good instrument. Lee Oskar has copper reeds, but they are REALLY long lasting (but it's hard to play overblows and the tone is not that thick to be honest). Suzuki (promaster or manji for example) has a lovely and warm tone, and the reeds are made of Phospor Bronze - durable, but not as much as steel ones. So as you can see every option has its pros and cons.
Lee Oskar was my first 'real' harmonica (after silverstar). It's really durable, responsive etc., hard overblows, that's why I switched. Also I find hohners' sound richer.
Hey man. Thanks for making this video. I currently own a Suzuki Folkmaster now in the key of C (my primary key for now), Bb, and F. I'm planning to buy a Marine Band 1896 as an upgrade. My Folkmaster is pretty responsive, but not so as it only cost me like $15. Do you think I should get a Marine Band in the Key of C again or go for a different key this time (e.g. A or G)? FYI, I can pretty much bend, but sometimes the Folkmaster can be pretty unresponsive (not so to the point it becomes unplayable, but it does make weird shrill sounds sometimes). So yeah would love to know your opinion on that matter. Thanks for helping out!
Hey! I would go for a different key, it's nice to have harmonica in A, it's used even more frequently than C! Folkmaster is not a crazy good choice for bending&overbending training, but if you'll learn how to play these technics on Folkmaster, you'll be able to play them on any harmonica. So I would go for MB in the key of A, the old classic combination. :D
@@kwkurasThanks bro. Yeah I have been debating as well if I should get another C this time with a better brand. But yeah, will definitely look into the lower keys now...
I think I would get a G harp before a Bb. I've had more call for tunes in D than in F - in fact, I don't recall EVER playing in F off the top of my head. That's just my experience jamming with bands sporadically for 35 years - YMMV. You're dead on with the F harp. I've been using an F low for a while when I need to play in C. They're both a PITA, to be honest, but you have to be able to play in C if you're playing with a piano.
G is also a good idea, I personally don't use it too often. I use C (2nd &4th) position, D (1st position) instead. It depends mosty on the repertoire. Thrill is gone, My babe, lots of jazz songs needs B flat. Classic harmonica blues is played on G more often, that's true
Asad Ali recommended getting a chromatic harp as if that will take care all of your needs and concerns...Well, chromatic is good, if you can learn to play it, but certain forms of music is very difficult to play on a chromatic, some forms of music cannot be played at all, unless you get a customized chromatic, and that's going to cost you.
Diatonic and chromatic are totally different instruments, saying someone to choose one and not other is like saying "don't play trombone, play trumpet, it sound better". Well it all depends ;)
@@kwkuras I've been playing harp since 1972, I know the difference between a diatonic and a chromatic. In my statement, I never referenced diatonics. My statement was, purchasing a chromatic won't satisfy all needs to play all keys and forms of music.

The most universal keys in my opinion are Bb & A. (for blues and jazz), and for the rest it may be G or C. If I had to chose one harmonica for all genres it would be G, the one that I use very rarely, but it allows you to play jazz tunes like Autumn Leaves or Summertime, blues in the key of D, first position folk & country songs in G. Or you could get a piano. It also has all the sharps and flats, bit can't do what a ordinary 10 hole diatonic harmonica can. Neither can a chromatic for that matter.
