Except the single side out mono black from the headphone Jack mistake, he should’ve plugged the red into channel 3 and panned channels 2 and 3 left and right so the h6 receives audio from the computer on both sides. Panning out his voice to the h6 was a bad move. Apart from that it was great 6 out of 10.

I don't podcast (yet at least) but use my podcast set up to do GoToMeeting consulting calls with clients every day using a Mackie 1402 VLZ4 mixer, Behringer Multicom Pro-XL compressor/limiter gate, Behringer Powerplay Pro-XL headphone amplifier, Heil PR40 and Rode NTG3 (when I don't want the mic to be seen and am okay with some ambient noise), iRig 2 (to bring in phone calls) and Roland R-05 audio recorder.
I've seen and paid for a lot of tutorials on how to get that all set up and this is THE BEST tutorial I've seen yet. Really cool to watch a tutorial from someone who actually podcasts (really really well).
The tip I learned from your video was to use the panning functionality of the mixer to split the tracks (it was something I had wanted to do for a while!). So thanks a bunch and love the channel so far :D

I bought the Mackie mix12, irig2 (phone calls), Rode Reporter Mic omnidirectional also will be upgrading to Audio Technica BPHS1 (Lewis Howes) for consistent sound direct studio sound.

I have a question, so my podcast I use four mics and the irig2 to send the sound to my iphone to record video to upload on youtube. But I wanted to play music from my laptop to the mixer, do I use the hosa cable to connect to the griffin imic and connect the headphone in on the irig2?
buddy, of course I thumbed up and subscribed the first time I watched this.. anyway, I did the pan thing you suggested to get separated tracks out of my Zoom H6, one for my voice out of the mic and another track for the media I'm playing or discussion of a person on Skype. But, when editing I noticed that during silent times on one track I hear the other track playing at a low db. I would imagine that's because using a pan to all left for one track and all right to the other leaks or leaves a bit of my mic on the media track. Is that normal, or should the pan way you suggested give true separation? The good news is I mix the tracks back together with software but what if I wanted the complete separate tracks? Is this just a mixer norm?

You broke this down perfectly for a guy like me, who is gearing up for podcasting, and has zero experience and knowledge in audio/recording equipment. I've watched many videos now doing research, but EVERY SINGLE ONE has spoke way over my head about these things, with seemingly almost a refusal to meet people at square one. This was SO HELPFUL!
If a person cannot teach a complex topic in a simple way to an uninformed audience, then that person likely does not have a thorough understanding of that topic. Excellent explanation of the equipment and their functions. You cut through the B.S. and explained why a mixer can be more usfull than a standard audio interface and how to make the most out of the mixer. I am new to all this and wanted to simply record my guitar and singing on a computer. But with all the videos teaching how to use a DAW, interfaces, mixers, mics, it can be very confusing. Yours was one of the best !. It also makes me happy with the equipment I bought. Lap top and free DAW software, small 4 channel mixer with USB/Bluetooth/phantom power that acts as the interface, with old school Tascam cassette recorder in the loop for low fi capture/mixing capabilities. Giving me 3 modes of audio capture and processing. Cassete, USB stick on mixer, or send it off to the computer DAW for final tweaking or adding digital instruments. Not a bad setup for an amateur who was just getting started at this. But I still learned a lot from your advice, setup and explanations ! Thanks for a great video! Mike from Boston

GREAT JOB explaining the functions of a mixer and digital recorder in a manner that total novices as well as those with introductory knowledge can understand! As an auctioneer, I also agree that the Shure SM58 is a total workhorse mic! It's my personal favorite, since I use and abuse them all the time!

Ah, finally! Finally, someone teaches me how to use and how this Behringer mixer of mine (which I was about to ditch and connect my Audio Technica directly via USB) works and what these knobs are for!
I can now unplug the mixer's USB cable from my laptop and record a clear, professional sound (without the humming it was being recorded due to being connected via USB)!

Thank you so much. I've "done sound" for my school and church for several years and never understood why I would want the Aux or FX Sends. I used to do photography, and we used a very similar philosophy: get it right in the hardware up front and the software end is a piece of cake.

Dude, I have the attention span of a frickin' goldfish sometimes, so if something is longer than about 15mins, i sometimes have to come back later and finish it. I watched this whole thing in one setting...even took notes as needed throughout. I'm setting up a show and will be using a Zoom H5. I won't be using the mixer for now because i'm starting with a dynamic USB. This was full of good info..i subbed.

I have the Blue Yeti and I thought I was going crazy. I could not get the sound quality I was hoping for from it. Now I know. AWESOME explanation.

Fast forward to 2022, and a great new mixer is the YAMAHA AG06 MK2. It has a dedicated Mix Minus button! It is USB powered so can sit on your desk, married to your laptop! :) The Reverbs and the EQs are controlled by the laptop but the settings are RETAINED on the mixer till you change them again. I love this mixer. Aside from the two XLR inputs for Mic/Line, it has a stereo input 3/4 as twin 1/4 inch inputs, and also a twin RCA input 5/6. Looks like RCA inputs are still state of the art!

Great video! The Rode Podcaster Automatically creates a “mix minus” for incoming callers. I personally agree that a mixer board is ideal for the various inputs they offer. I am using a Presonus StudioLive AR Series mixer. It is awesome!!! It offers both Bluetooth and USB connectivity too...

Thanks! Yes, you could definitely have all three in a room at the same time. The best way to do what you're asking is to have a headphone amplifier that plugs into the headphone out of the Zoom recorder, or the mixer. Something like this one: solohour.com/headphoneamp
