Everyone feels that way. Co-workers are like roommates. In Russian they call such people acquaintance (Приятель) pree-ya-tel , the actual word translates as a friendly acquaintance or something like that. Basically, they're people you're friendly with but can easily lose for whatever reason; moving changing jobs, etc. Work friends are only so close. There's nothing wrong with this IMHO. Americans want everyone to be their friend all the time and it's annoying. Real friends stick around even after you leave and life changes. You know who your real friends are. You should spend you energy and time on them and your family.

Working from home has been a game changer for me. As someone on the autism spectrum, I no longer have to worry about masking all day which is mentally and physically exhausting, among other things that used to cause me some anxiety at the office. Weirdly, I've found it far easier to communicate with team members remotely as well. The best part is being able to have my own setup that is comfortable for me, and have more frequent (albeit small) breaks. It doesn't ruin my focus. No, I don't work in my pyjamas and never have done! It would be great to see more companies going with the freelance-style approach of "here's the deadline, I don't care when/where/how you do this task, so long as it's done on time and to a high standard".

I'm so tired of old corporate boomers. Old men terrified of their last days on earth, knowing that the end is creeping closer, they fight for any scrap of relevancy while also trying to ensure that their "legacy" continues after they are dead...everyone must do what they say after they are pushing up daisies because they can still hear and see you on earth...this is why tradition must die. Along with religion, fascism, neoliberalism, and all that rot.

A lot of these jobs that are not considered "WFH" will be non-existent as AI, Machine Learning, and optimization in the labor force improves. Nurses and Doctors can telehealth now, teachers can teach virtually, truck drivers are technically remote workers and don't have to sit in a cubicle or an office 8+ hours and can work independently, chefs can set up ghost kitchens and run a restaurant in their house and survive off Uber Eats, and manufacturing work is going to eventually be replaced by robots anyway. This is so stupid, it's not about advancement in labor or technology it's about micromanagement, extreme capitalism, and CEO cult personality ego worshipping.

I had a job doing product photos during the pandemic. The CEO and the manager lady refused to let marketing work from home because they wanted to “see our faces” which is some kind of short hand for “I’m lonely, I let myself go physically because my inflated sense of power here caused me to get comfortable, my spouse no longer has that glimmer in their eye for me so I find solace in small talk with employees that only fake laugh at my jokes to be nice. I need you here because I don’t have anyone else that I can corner into a canned response to my weekend plans to go see my sister who I compete with through material acquisition. We back hand each other with compliments while our kids run around and we both wonder secretly if we made the best choices for our lives.” Something like that. No one was safe about it at all, I just wanted to come in and shoot the photos or shoot them at home then edit them on my faster personal computer, away from the coughing women that didn’t wear mask at the very beginning of the pandemic. They would say “it’s not going to kill anyone, you just get sick for a little bit and it goes away.” Nevermind it might kill me I just didn’t feel like being sick for 2 weeks. People are selfish and let their vanity get in the way of other peoples health/ lifestyle choices. I don’t work there anymore, the manager lady eventually got hospitalized from covid. They are about to go out of business I’m pretty sure, I’m glad I don’t work there anymore.

Freedom to pack up and live anywhere we want to live next for any reason… I really think they don’t like the level of freedom and power we have when we don’t need them anymore. If we’re not chained to the system what’s going to stop us from leaving when we want to? Nothing. They don’t like that. Too often I see people hiring looking for desperate people so the hiring company has more leverage over them. They do NOT like having less leverage over you. It’s really just about power.

Some corporate cultures provide a dangerous place to make friends. While you take the time to get to know someone, others will take the time to stab you in the back. There is no "real" connection available when there is a revolving door or a toxic culture. Just because a company talks about its amazing culture doesn't mean it isn't toxic. You have to have a lot of empathy to become aware that what people are telling you is sometimes who they are. If the boss has all these funny stories where someone is hurt or someone is made to feel stupid or someone is manipulated or abused. This is when you learn who your dealing with. Don't try to be friends with that.

I think some are scared that if people don't have to worry about commute, they can get higher-paying jobs they'd normally have to relocate to. And then their competition pool grows exponentially as far as retaining employees & seeking candidates.
Previously a low-paying and physically-close office would be seen as the only option while remote work was not available. They want the perception that you cannot find remote work and overall to kill the trend if they can.
Basically, wfh does makes employers have to pay more. That's why it tends to be lower-paying jobs of a category, like Tesla, pushing for wfh. And higher-paying jobs with good management, have the resources to filter a larger candidate pool of wfh applicants and find better workers; so they understand how the company can benefit.

1:30 What we do with our time outside of work is irrelevant as long as we're meeting expectations as set by the agreement during the hiring process.
Outside of any job I could be driving around, working a different job or starting starting a business, sleeping, jumping on a trampoline, slapping the sausage, searching for Atlantis, eating soap, going to school, or anything else I want. It's not a damn person's business until I neglect my responsibilities, which is why disciplinary action is a thing.
If I'm showing up late or falling asleep on the job, of course it's the company's right to take action if they wish.

    * Prepare my own food which is definitely healthier and hygienic than my office canteen.
    * Going to gym on regular basis while working from home . Earlier I used to stuck in traffic and by the time I was reaching home it was already dinner time.
*Started traveling and going to health clubs and finding life beyond corporate world
*Started creating a passive income and hobby which will be fruitful in coming years.
*Improved mental health because I was away from micromanagement by company managers.
*Most importantly i got an opportunity to distance myself from useless nerd people who will always talk about projects such as coding review , multithreading , tech gadgets , during lunch time .
*Taking naps at regular interval which keeps me motivated and boosted.

I work from home in a corporate environment. It's awesome. There is absolutely no reason for me to go into the office and I don't have to... yet.
What I've come to learn is that in person collaboration is great for super small teams that can pivot and decide to do things at any time for any reasons. Being next to each other in that kind of environment is great.
This can't happen in a corporate environment because, like you said, you just get your wings clipped every time you want to change something because your boss, your bosses boss, their boss, the executive suite, they have to decide on ideas you have and they frankly don't care for them because it doesn't fit their corporate narrative that THEY are providing value. Ideas are supposed to be their job, not yours. So, things never get done.
Collecting a check from home while running circles around those around you by providing any value at 10% of your effort is great.
With the other 90% of your effort, you're gonna take time off, go hang out with friends, take care of yourself, start your own business, work on your own things... And nothing will be any different for the corporate company you work for because they're so damn slow anyway.
