Not really because it’s not ongoing. After the dlc is over the game is over, where the ongoing games get updated with new content for over a decade usually.
What the hell is the difference between action and action adventure games anyways. Every game on the best action category has some sort of adventure barring helldivers.
@weirdbro6597 action games are all combat, very little traversal. Sifu, Helldivers, ratchet and clank are action games. Very intense action, linear af traversal. Action adventure may not have as much action, but far more traversing. Typically open world/sandbox. Breath of the wild, ghost of tsushima, and the far cry series are action adventure games.
As amazing as Shadow of the Erdtree is, it has no business being nominated for GOTY, neither do remakes and much less remasters. Why isn't there a category for best dlc?
I loved Shadow of the Erdtree and so far it was easily the best content released this year that I played, but I would agree that DLC shouldn't be considered. Remakes are different if you ask me though. The FFVII games are perfect examples as they are technically remakes but are essentially completely different games that are just re-imagined experiences and fundamentally deserve to be in the running.
I don’t mind remakes for GotY. Capcom puts a lot of work into RE2 and RE4. SH2 is pretty good. They never win but they get nommed. Where I think some remakes should be excluded is Best Narrative, when it’s just copying the same narrative. So this year for instance, Silent Hill 2 really shouldn’t be nommed in Best Narrative. The story is from 2002, it’s everything else that’s new (which is why it should be eligible for GotY, Best Sound, etc). Bloober didn’t create this narrative. On the other hand, FF7 Rebirth has those new narrative beats. I don’t see it as a remake really, with what they’ve done. I think it is fine being nommed for Best Narrative.
The reason why they don't release who's voting for what game is because when critics make up 90% of the overall score, revealing who voted for what is basically giving away who'll win for each category, long before the show itself reveals it
Ok so? Just reveal who voted for what once the show is over. The real reason they don’t want to show the results is because they’d actually have to award the games that actually got the most votes over whichever game they want to tip the scales for
@@nandoman4769 think about this statement for a second, what would 'tipping the scales' look like if you were one of the few hundred voters in this election, since we can ignore the regular online voting since it's only 10%. And how would you distinguish between an honest valid vote and a vote that's just meant to award the games that they prefer? Who would you trust to decide that and whose vote should count? Or are you alleging that the voting isn't really happening, if so where's your evidence of that? Maybe when you and Luke have thought about this complaint a little deeper I'll take it more seriously Also we do know what games each critic voter is voting for, since each publication and critic also has their own awards
They need to make that foreign kid that walked on stage years ago be the host of the show and he just rambles on the whole time about everything but video games
Black Myth Wukong and Stellar Blade but Silent Hill being nominated for action adventure is a joke. And a dlc being a nominee for game of the year is not fair and an insult to the other nominees.
It’s just weird that after Shadow of the Erd Tree was released, TGA now considers DLC for GOTY while last year Phantom Liberty came out and it wasn’t given the same treatment, it’s just weird that’s the case as I don’t think DLC should be included as part of the GOTY discussion due to the fact that you need another game to play the DLC, if it was released stand alone then maybe but Shadow of the Erd Tree needs base Elden Ring to even play, and you have to progress a ways in to the base game to play Shadow of the Erd Tree in the first place, honestly I think this decision was made to get ahead of some blow back for it not being included in GOTY
That's simply not true, stop spreading lies. Phantom liberty and cdpr's last dlc blood and wine both got nominated for many game awards. Phantom liberty didn't get nominated last year becuase the other games were better
@zuriyel5368 witcher 3 blood and wine in the past rules could have been nominated for goty, but didn't becuase it wasn't good/large enough. Elden ring dlc is 50 hours long and got 10/10's across the board so it's easier for it to justify itself under the EXACT SAME RULES
@@Ashton_Cats then why did they make a whole big deal about having DLC’s being considered for nomination, if Blood And Wine could have been nominated then why was nominating DLC made a big deal, oh unless DLC couldn’t be nominated for GOTY but SOTET was so good they had to change the rules to include it
Adding DLC and expansuons to the nominees does open flood gates, games receive them all the time, and some of them quite amazing, but it still doesn't make them their own games.
I mean no... Hellblade's message is certainly not "let it go" lmao... literally quite the opposite in fact. It's about embracing and living with the things we deal with on daily basis lol.
So... The message is the same as in the original game, then? That was literally about her coming to terms with her mental illness, and the death of her husband. Honestly the game did not need a sequel at all.
Erdtree can't be nominated for GOTY because Phantom Liberty wasn't. Phantom Liberty has enough content to be a $70 stand-alone game and has some of my best moments in gaming from the past 15 years.
@@RedTwo22 So is Cyberpunk's Phantom Liberty but it doesn't count simply because it REQUIRES the base game. We might as well include all of WoW's expansions if we're going to be splitting hairs like that.
@@RedTwo22 it’s still a dlc and the same can be said for Phantom Liberty, just because it’s 30+ hours doesn’t change the fact that SOTET is a DLC, you still need base Elden Ring and you need to play through abit of base Elden Ring
Its more like them doing a shot for shot remake using current actors and filmaking techniques. Still shouldnt be held as its own thing, as they arent creating anything new, just copying an already proven success with their own coat of paint.
I agree wth most of the stuffs Luke said, except for when he talked about how Geoff should make the jury more transparent and show what they are voting for to the public. That would lead to unecessary conflict or attack on individuals coming from either fans or influential sides. Take this year Wukong for example, the game is either loved or hated to the extreme by the public. That'd make anyone not voting for it receive backlash from fans and anyone voting for it getting attack by the SJWs. My point is that this would absolutely have an effect on how the juries cast their votes, especially the smaller ones
Owlcat was supporting pathfinder with huge updates over 3 years, they deserve a reward for it. Also, their games were never nominated for best rpg.....
The Pathfinder games are kind of niche and a lot more mechanically dense so they’re much more difficult to get into than other crpgs like BG3. Plus they didn’t have near the same amount of media coverage. Love Pathfinder but I sadly don’t think it was ever going to happen.
@@lightspectr That’s subjective. What you and I consider to be good or great RPGs won’t be the same as what everybody else considers to be good or great. And what we think certainly won’t be the same as the panel of judges for TGA that focus mainly on highly popular mainstream titles. Owlcat’s Pathfinder series is amazing, but it’s underrepresented by mainstream gaming outlets in favor of higher budget titles. That’s one of everybody’s biggest gripes with the game awards, that players basically have no say in what games are elected or get awards. Believe me, I’m 100% on your side here. We can love all the niche games we want, but the way TGA currently works does not favor the player’s input and that’s the point I’m making.
Vote with your wallet remains true. They can push whatever they want, if you don't like the look of it, please don't buy it. Would be funny if the adverstising costs caused some of those companies to collapse, but I doubt it's often tied to it. Good and bad games can simply speak for themselves, and with easy highlight reels with stuff like shadowplay, anyone can create ads for good games simply by uploading some good footage.

It’s crazy how the game awards just litearlly became the oscars/ e3 that everyone hates.. but was made as a counter.. Live long enough to become the thing you despise.
Game Of The Year awards being awarded to DLC, Remasters and Remakes seems like a big disservice to new, original games released that year. To me that doesn't set a good precedent. I would prefer separate categories.
@@Maria_Banks a lot of people disagree with that, maybe for western AAA games or in the sense that there are a lot of solid games but not a lot of extraordinary ones but this is a solid year
Remakes are no different than a DLC it is content added to an existing game. Only New original games qualify. How they don't understand that explains why they probably still play on Console and fight with each other over dumb insignificant points to claim victory.
@@piggymaster3209Remasters shouldn't be considered at all. A remake usually involves changing quite a few things from the original, so it's a new game in the end. Remasters are far less than that.
The major problem with DLC, remasters, or remakes being eligible for GOTY is that it makes it possible for a single game to win it across multiple years; two, three, or even four times. The possibility even existing is ridiculous.
I’m fine with remakes since those are whole games completely rebuilt. A DLC is not a new game, it is an extension of an already existing game. You need to own the base game to play the DLC. It doesn’t stand on its own. Meanwhile a remaster is the same exact game, but it’s upscaled. I agree that remasters shouldn’t be nominated either.
@@blueflare3848 a lot more goes into a remaster than just upscaling things. Especially if you’re making the game work on another platform, or in another engine. The term is also unfortunately used so loosely by publishers that some remasters are more of a ‘remake’ than some so-called ‘remake’s. Imo remasters and remakes should absolutely count. Anything standalone that doesn’t require another game to run should count. Otherwise it becomes an argument of semantics over subjective interpretations of ‘remaster’ and ‘remake’. I think DLCs should their own respective categories. How they’re categorised would be interesting as DLC is such a wide umbrella term. Singleplayer vs multiplayer is one possible distinction. It’d be difficult to have a DLC award for every genre due to a lack of consistency in what DLCs are available - and how many - in each genre. Paid dlc vs free updates would also be an interesting hurdle they’d have to jump - how could you compare a free update that all players experience with a paid dlc that only a fraction of the player base go out of their way to purchase? And if a game has multiple DLCs that come under the same category - can multiple be nominated? Loads of hurdles to jump and they’ve taken the absolute worst option of just taking the one major stand out DLC of the year and nominated it in some of the highest categories
@@ryaniswhoiam5695 Lol, you’re fine! I think you do have a point that in the case of some remakes, a lot more goes into it than just upscaling. The reason I’m more hesitant to allow remasters to be nominated is because they’re the same exact game. There might be some improvements, but there are no changes to story or gameplay (if there is then that’s a remake, not a remaster).
It’s called ‘GAME’ of the year not dlc of the year, no dlc no matter how long should be nominated in the game of the year category. Shadow of the erdtree is amazing but it’s just that a DLC, not a full game
No I disagree Shadow of the Erdtree or Phantom Liberty should be able to be nominated as an Example of what DLC should be for all other devs if it's bug enough to be a whole game then it should be IMO
Luke is absolutely right that DLC should be its own category. Shadow of the Erdtree was great but it was just more Elden Ring & CP2077 winning Best Ongoing Game last year was just odd. Phantom Liberty was phenomenal & easily would’ve won best DLC if the category existed.
My problem is that ppl are review bombing elden ring again because they made a grear dlc that got nominated for awards lol. Its just childish. Why hold it against one of the few AAA studios that still makes full complete games with zero microtranx and never have any cash grab content.
Game awards and Oscars/ all these other awards shows aren’t really for average gamers but those within the industry and deeper within the gaming community bubble. Only time GOTY matters is GOTY edition game sales.
DLC stealing spot from something like Space Marine/Stellar Blade/Helldivers (heck, even Satisfactory) is crazy. That's coming from someone who cleared Shadow of the Erdtree twice. Also i'm split on remakes- Those already have advantage of base game having story/setting/style/characters etc., a lot new stuff boils down to graphics and mechanics
Remakes I think should be included because it's a brand new game built from the ground up. Otherwise the Departed couldn't win best picture because it's a "remake" of Infernal Affairs. but DLC, like what are we doing here?
I remember when I had no idea what on earth Granblue Fantasy was. For context to what it is. It’s basically a web based gacha game that got fighting game spin offs in the form of versus and versus rising. I see as it as a win. Because it means the franchise is becoming more exposed. There is also a Relink an action JRPG side game to the main gacha game. Which was also a really good game. My personal GOTY. Figured I would reveal what on earth Granblue Fantasy is to anyone here who doesn’t know what it is.
Yeah Relink should have gotten into the best action game. Don’t get me wrong Versus Rising looks good I’m not big on fighting games but it would be a good way to expose that game and another way to expose more people to GBF and expose people to more of the lore.
Some remakes aren’t anything special, just a new coat of paint and a better framerate. But FF7 Rebirth was remade from the ground up with so much additional content. It’s literally a new game.
@@LXV-e9d You're confusing remakes with remasters. A remaster is just a glorified port of the exact same game. Remakes are built from the ground up that is based on the original but it's a 1:1 recreation.
I see people suggesting a “Best DLC / Expansion” award, but honestly I feel like that would end up feeling like an irrelevant category. It’s not like there are a whole bunch of major, noteworthy expansions released in a given year. You’d basically have one guaranteed winner up against a bunch of smaller or obscure nominees. Let’s say we make the hypothetical “DLC of the Year” award for 2024. What are we nominating besides SotE?
I feel like Elden Ring could've been nominated for Best Ongoing game instead. Tbf Cyberpunk was nominated there last year when Phantom Liberty DLC was released.
What happens if a company decides to just market their game as a remake as opposed to a remastered, because you know the terms are interchanged a lot in the industry.
I think that any game that was remade from an era with no game awards, say 2012 and before, should have a clear opportunity at finally winning Best Game. Ex: Silent Hill 2 It wasn't nominated this year, so at least it had its ONE fair shot. There should also be a Horror category. My nominees: Silent Hill 2, The Casting Of Frank Stone, Still Wakes The Deep, Crow Country, Withering Rooms

With how much I have seen people in the industry and general public talk about how a DLC should not be nominated and also how good Balatro is makes me think that there is a genuine chance it wins this (as it should)
Shadow of The Erdtree is definitely one of the best releases this year, however it is not a standalone game and you still have to buy a 2 year old game to play it. It should not qualify for GOTY no matter how big it is or how much content it has or how good it is. I am actually surprised BMW got many nominations including GOTY so that was actually refreshing to see. Glad to see Metaphor get so many nominations. Veilguard only getting a nomination for accessibility was hilarious xD

Hottake probably but Shadow of the Erdtree shouldn't be classified for game of the year 1. It's DLC 2. Its a add on from 2 years ago it doesn't matter if the DLC 20hrs or 8hrs it's still not a new game and I had same problem with cyberpunk last year had nom that it shouldn't be

I think remakes are a very grey area, especially since it's a word very loosely used and has a wide interpretation. I personally feel if it's the same game experience, like in the case of TLOU1R, then it's not really a 'remake'.
This is a perfect example of why there should be a Best DLC / Expansion category to vote on if they want to give stuff like Phantom Liberty or Shadow of the Erdtree any special awards imo. Same can arguably be said for Remasters.
It was a decent year, Silent Hill 2 Remake being actually good was a shocking surprise. Obviously ReFantazio and Astro Bot are on a level above everything else, still no sign of Silksong, etc.. but it was not that bad, just a average year. Indies the same thing, Balatro and Mullets Madjack isolated from all the other indies released this year. A dry year was 2014
Agree with Luke on Sahdow of the Erdtree. It was amazing and it is a massive DLC that could have been it's own game alongside Elden Ring but you can't play the Shadows without the base game. Another example of a Remake that could make a list is Dead Space. That was the same game but built from the ground up with added content and changes to make it an updated game.
Who picks the nominations? I saw on a Reddit post it’s 90% chosen candidates and 10% public voters. But dunno if that’s true? Never mind saw it was shown in the video 😂
The jury is comprised of journalists, developers and studios. Honestly how it should be. Audience votes should only contribute to 10-20% max. You might be able to break things down and vote accordingly but 99% of gamers can’t do that. Gamers are heavily biased and view things on a very surface level + they don’t play all the games.
@@Hollowed01 Meh. A reimagining of a story already told. Now dragged into 3 separate games with a dash of multiverse that everyone is sick of. Hardly GOTY material. But IGN and the other outlets loved it so it’ll win something.
Their reasoning is arbitrary nonsense. They should just go ahead and make a separate category for Best Expansion. Also imo Metaphor is my GOTY. I think it's one of the best JRPGs of the last few years, and is a great refinement and sharpening of the Atlus formula that strips away a lot of Persona's bloat and bad pacing. Rebirth is my runner-up along with Wukong
Honestly, I'm shocked they even acknowledged Wukong. Then again, they likely only did that just so they don't have a repeat of the Hogwarts Legacy debacle.
I agree on Luke's reasoning for excluding DLC. If they really want to include them, why don't they just make a separate category at the game awards like "Best DLC of the year"? Why consider it for "game" of the year?
If that was the COD would win every year beaches it has the bigger play count. We don't want it to be a popularity contest, it would make it a sht show.
I think DLC of substantial magnitude and or quality should be nominated. Simple. New weapons, destination, clothes and outfits and armor, new characters, DLC, new mechanics that cause shake up, change and can interact with older systems and beyond. Finshes a game by adding replayabilty. The Risk of Rain 1st DLC comes to mind or the Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen DLC. Borderland 3 when they added the escelating difficulty horde esc challenge modes with loot rain.
@ST-mn6nw maybe broaden your horizons a bit. I'm always down for any kind of game. Turn based, action, point and clicks, RPGs, JRPGs, Platformers, the list goes on. The key is to be into variety
This begs the question, at what point does, if it can, a DLC become so big and so different that it may be considered its own game? It also begs the question, at what point, if it can, that remakes can be considered their own games?
I understand why you think the voting should be transparent and from a fan’s perspective that makes sense. But I couldn’t disagree more… if people know their choice will be publicized then they may vote for something they actually wouldn’t have voted for due to fear of pushback. I think the Game Awards could do a better job with how they communicate but that would invalidate the legitimacy of the awards. Hey Luke, want to tell everyone who you voted for in the recent presidential election?? If you believe in your position on this you shouldn’t have any problem with that… right? Am I wrong about this? Because it seems very obvious to me.
No Rise of the Ronin nomination in the action game category is a travesty. It has the best combat of any action game this last year, hands down. Anyone who thinks Rise of the Ronin's combat isn't great almost definitely just isn't very good at it, and doesn't understand using stance dancing and weapon swapping to animation cancel, allowing execution of flashy combos. Or using shrunkens to keep enemy stamina from regenerating, while using the accompanying dodge to reposition without using stamina. Mark my words: one day, Team Ninja will get their due.
Exclusivity and just being ignored by the press for Dragon's Dogma 2 hurt it a lot. But yeah, it deserved a nod. I did like it more more than Dragon's Dogma 2, I actually regret buying that day 1 and wished I bought Ronin.
@chuckles471 I did the exact same thing, since I was such a fan of Dark Arisen. I tried my best to like DD2, but I left it feeling disappointed. And I do wish there wasn't the exclusivity with Rise of the Ronin, that definitely hurt the game's ability to get wider audience appeal.

Adding DLC and expansuons to the nominees does open flood gates, games receive them all the time, and some of them quite amazing, but it still doesn't make them their own games.

It shits on all their other games this year that “remake”
I agree wth most of the stuffs Luke said, except for when he talked about how Geoff should make the jury more transparent and show what they are voting for to the public. That would lead to unecessary conflict or attack on individuals coming from either fans or influential sides. Take this year Wukong for example, the game is either loved or hated to the extreme by the public. That'd make anyone not voting for it receive backlash from fans and anyone voting for it getting attack by the SJWs. My point is that this would absolutely have an effect on how the juries cast their votes, especially the smaller ones
Let's be real, the reason they don't reveal who voted for what is to avoid harassment
Owlcat was supporting pathfinder with huge updates over 3 years, they deserve a reward for it. Also, their games were never nominated for best rpg.....
no choice. commercial power.
The Pathfinder games are kind of niche and a lot more mechanically dense so they’re much more difficult to get into than other crpgs like BG3. Plus they didn’t have near the same amount of media coverage. Love Pathfinder but I sadly don’t think it was ever going to happen.
@@Curlorly06 yes and? was there in year of its release any better RPG?

Owlcat’s Pathfinder series is amazing, but it’s underrepresented by mainstream gaming outlets in favor of higher budget titles. That’s one of everybody’s biggest gripes with the game awards, that players basically have no say in what games are elected or get awards. Believe me, I’m 100% on your side here. We can love all the niche games we want, but the way TGA currently works does not favor the player’s input and that’s the point I’m making.

Game Of The Year awards being awarded to DLC, Remasters and Remakes seems like a big disservice to new, original games released that year. To me that doesn't set a good precedent. I would prefer separate categories.
Maybe because that’s just how bad games were this year
Just add best DLC and Remakes/Remaster category
@@Maria_Banks a lot of people disagree with that, maybe for western AAA games or in the sense that there are a lot of solid games but not a lot of extraordinary ones but this is a solid year
Remakes are no different than a DLC it is content added to an existing game. Only New original games qualify. How they don't understand that explains why they probably still play on Console and fight with each other over dumb insignificant points to claim victory.
@@piggymaster3209Remasters shouldn't be considered at all. A remake usually involves changing quite a few things from the original, so it's a new game in the end. Remasters are far less than that.
What's funny about best sports games category is that it's a competition between 7/10 games among two publishers. That's how bad sports games are now.

Why hold it against one of the few AAA studios that still makes full complete games with zero microtranx and never have any cash grab content.
the problem i see with these choices is if you only play one game than voting doesn't matter half the games i have now idea if there worth playing.

@obviusthemaxim2509 honestly none have been for me except rise of the ronin that gets no love
@ST-mn6nw maybe broaden your horizons a bit. I'm always down for any kind of game. Turn based, action, point and clicks, RPGs, JRPGs, Platformers, the list goes on. The key is to be into variety
@@obviusthemaxim2509 yeah true I've been trying, idk if it's was this year but balders gate 3 is on sale now gonna try it
@@ST-mn6nw Baldurs Gate III is an excellent game. Definitely give it a go
This begs the question, at what point does, if it can, a DLC become so big and so different that it may be considered its own game? It also begs the question, at what point, if it can, that remakes can be considered their own games?
Here's for a Metaphor sweep 🙏
@@null5489 It's not just that. Prior to releasing, if you looked at the UA-cam discourse, people were insulting Ronin saying it was the poor man's Tsushima. Essentially "copying" the biggest trend chasing Ubisoft copycat of all. Honestly that's what actually hurt it more than DD2.
@@GollumsJealous Yeah, I did see some of that. I guess people just have brain damage. There's only passing similarities between Rise of the Ronin and Tsushima, any actual analysis would make it clear how different the two games are.
So dlc takes the spotlight in goty category in replace of great games like SM2 and Stellar blade? ....
Black myth wukong is my game of the year easy! They need a DLC category!! Just like they need a remake category also .
It won't win any of those awards but it is easily better than every single game nominated this year save BG3. FF7 Rebirth is also very good and I can see a case for Metaphor (kind of, but it's really overrated). In the end, Erdtree really exposed how Elden Ring isn't that good of a game and how there is only one true contender for game of this decade, i.e. BG3.
@@GollumsJealous opinions
Of course, they nominated Star Wars Outlaws. It is Ubisoft's only Christmas title and Ubi has been very generous to journalists regarding events around this title.
Most of these nominations are just... meh
Veilguard being on innovation and accessibility sounds like some kind of dark humor joke
Accessibility is mostly measured based on how easy it is for people with disabilities to play the game, it have little to do with the quality of the game itself.
They snuck in Veilguard under accessibility 😂.
For what!? Terrible writing that makes their characters laughable. Or a toggle for top scars.
which is ironic because it excludes like 90% of the player base
Don’t forget they snuck in Star Wars Outlaws for best Action/Adventure game and didn’t include Space Marine 2, Black Myth Wukong, or Helldivers 2 in the catagory
@@Blast1314because none of those games actually fit well into that category which is why they are in action.
the category meaning is on the website.
@@dr_diddy yes, because when you look at Silent Hill 2 and Star Wars Outlaws you think of action, and when you look at SM2 and Black Myth Wukong you don’t think of action
@@Blast1314that’s why they got nominated for action. Not action/adventure
I would love to see what each member voted for but sadly I think the gaming community would use that information to send threats if they felt a member voted poorly.
