According to my understanding, one should not offer meat items as offerings as this may attract the more fiercer types of beings especially if you do not have a certain level of practice and stability in your realizations of the Wisdom of Emptiness and Unconditional compassion. It is best to keep to offering just vegetarian food and juices and spring water as offerings. If possible, it is helpful to benefit the departed ones reciting the different mantras or prayers for their wellbeing, for e.g Namo Guanshiyin Pusa , Namo Amituofo, Om Mani Padme Hung. thank you.
