- Paint better trees in watercolor by doing these simple shape studies. These are a great way to familiarize yourself with tree forms. Volume and mass are important in portraying the leaf canopies of any tree shape, much more important that stippling in all the foliage detail. These dimensional shape studies are a great exercise for plein air painting and journaling.

I just worked through this exercise. Worked pretty well. Thanks!
This is very helpful to me, designing a Christmas card.
Love those trees..
Watching is 2020: I'm brand new to watercolors. This is a FANTASTIC guide. Thank you so much!
OMGoodness... you just helped we with 1) drawing basic shaped trees 2) using my waterbrush with just one color and not overworking it...same affect as your pen 3) a great page in my new journal AND most importantly 4) the confidence to sketch & paint. THANK YOU!
Billie Barton Wow, I did all that... ;-) Thanks so much for watching. Glad I could help.
Thank you my trees were never quite right. That’s such a help 🙂
I am addicted to this channel....
Yo Steve! This was exactly what I needed to try tonight. I didn't hate the results like I did of yesterday's landscape. Thanks. Btw, great to know you follow Liron too. It's encouraging to know someone with your amazing skills still checks out other UA-camrs!
Hi, thank you very much for your teaching! You are a great teacher , your videos are very helpful and your voice is relaxing and sympathetic.
Best regards from France!
You are giving me so much confidence that I will be able to improve with my watercolour painting. Thank you for such great tutorials Steve.
I have never gone outside to sketch anything but once our weather warms up and the leaves are on the trees here in Canada, I just may give it a try! Very helpful exercise! ~ Deb
artzology Thanks Deb. Have fun!
Thank you. I keep coming back to your tutorials again and again. I always find something to learn.
Thank you! I was in tree despair and this has helped a lot.
welcome back!!! how dare real work get in the way of play. Thanks for the tutorial
Achoo You I know right?! Thanks for watching!
That’s what I’m learning now! Do shapes & shade/highlights in pencil & now seeing these shapes in most objects! Ty as trying to focus on each leaf & what shape for a willow tree? Can use your paint to pull down long parts but not sure on first shape. Am unable to get outside much due to physical illness but maybe online find ref photos (not the same) & photo shopped to much in my opinion. Ty great video.
Excellent. I want to be able to draw distinct tree species in an impressionistic style so this was perfect. Thank you.
This is a great way to practice. Thank you so much for posting this!
Mary Vivit Yep, a great warm up exercise.
Awesome! This is exactly something I've been wondering about. What a perfect exercise to do in my sketchbook. Thank you.

+veritasca24 And Thank YOU for watching!
GREAT...THANKS!!! :D
that was absolutely fun to watch! can't wait to try it out!
coco Great to hear, thanks!
Hi Steve! Thank you for all of these very informative ideas!❤️ which pad of paper would be good for practice work?
When you said "shaped like a bullet" for the first tree I thought you had said "shaped like Poland." I immediately thought that was an odd description of a tree, but went back and realized I must've misheard haha.
😊
Great tips Steve! I will definitely keep this in mind next time I try to draw trees!
Ren Obscure Thanks Ren!
Thanks for the video! They always make me feel like I can do it too :) Great work!
kokoritosuperstar You're welcome, go for it!

Judy Mason Thanks for watching!
The Mind of Watercolor Love your channel. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Please Steve. Do some another basics paintings like sky, ocean someones very very easy for us beginners. Please.
I didn't catch the brand of the marker that you use. Very beautiful green. Thanks for all your tips and techniques.
+veritasca24 Winsor Newton. Thanks!
Not a fan of the Strathmore Watercolor Sketchbook. The ones that I have used in class only have 90 lb watercolor paper in them. They wrinkle badly, and pill up when you try to do any lifting. In my Plein Air class that I used the sketchbook, we talked about the issues ahead of time, and tried not to use so much water. Next time, I may need to get the mixed media paper or make our own sketchbooks. Do you have a good resource for making / binding watercolor sketchbooks ? Thanks for your helpful videos. Even this experienced artist enjoys them!
Thanks Barry. Try Sea Lemon, a channel right here on UA-cam. She has some good book binding tutorials. As for supplies. Love these guys. www.johnnealbooks.com/prod_detail_list/bookbinding
Like it. I now have permission to draw shapes.
Judith Meyer :-)
what kind of paper are you using? and where can o buy that? btw. you're video was so helpful. :)
Thanks! This was Strathmore's Mixed Media Visual Journal. Here's a link amzn.to/1XcA1oT
How do you keep the ink from bleeding outside the outline when you add the water??
pesto12601 It stay within the wet areas. Paint won't bleed onto dry paper.

Ha.. shows you what I know about watercoloring... off to play with my watercolor set! Thx and Subscribed!
excellent Steve did you try any of the other mediums we where on about
Andy Coakes I'm afraid not yet Andy. So many art supplies, so little time! :-)
i agree steve i am not in the best of health not picked a brush up in a couple of weeks its so hard to concentrate with being in so much pain i am hoping to buy the rest of them Winsor and newtom watercolor markers next week if finances permitting if not will after be next month
Thank you for the added tip that the mixed media Visual Journal works well with the WN wc markers. I have found that the Strathmore mix media 500 series art journals (brown cover) does not lend itself to using water to blend out the WN wc markers.
I did get the 12 color set of WN water color markers after viewing your evaluation and I do love them. Right now I am using watercolor paper and I want a journal so I will check out the Strathmore Visual journal. Interesting enough the Mix media visual journal is about one dollar more that the 90 lb watercolor journal (the mix media is 90 lb). I wonder is there a surface difference between the Mix media and the watercolor visual journal paper.
d phil Thanks for the input on the brown cover journal. I've not tried the markers there. I suspect they use that same exact paper in the Visual Journal Watercolor version.
I bet you are right yet could it be that the mix media visual journal have a more smooth watercolor paper than the watercolor visual journal? I will need to check a local art store to see if they stock both to check this out.
d phil I think the Mixed Media Visual Journal is just their bristol board. It is definitely smoother than the Watercolor version when I compared them.
OK. thanks for your knowledge.
Their mixed media journal is their Bristol vellum surface paper from their series 300 I believe. MIGHT be series 400.
It would of been nice to see the tree you’re modeling.
Also what pen is this please?:)
