I’m still trying to work this out and maybe you can give me some perspective with use on a Barnack and SL (the two camera I’ll be using). I can buy a new collapsible or a used black paint (or new chrome) rigid L/M for at a slightly higher price. The collapsible is ideal for size and a unique design for a Barnack. The rigid is a bit odd on a pre-war IIIb, but has the advantage in general handling, especially on the SL, and I have B&W 39mm filters and hood. The .5 close focus collapsible on the SL is a slight advantage. So, one 35mm L/M, any thoughts? (A pair of Voigtlander L39 28/40 was an idea, but that 8-element has something old school Leica that I want)
Yes I love these LLL. I got both but swapped the LTM for the rigid. Now I miss the LTM for small size on Barnacks so I’ll likely rebuy it. Rigid nicer to use. See recent video vs Leica 8E. Use LLL L-M adapter on SL for all M lenses to focus closer. See MrLeica.com for LLL discount link on the gear tab.
I have too many Leica lenses that I use. My favourites are in order of preference- the Summaron 35/2.8 (amazing lens), Summicron 35/2 Type 1 (8 elements) and the Light Lens Lab 35/2 (first batch of 500 permanently glued to my M2) and I can honestly say this new collapsible lens would be fantastic. Who cares where it comes from. In the end its about the photos. Great review Matt. Another tool in the arsenal this lens. Looks fine. Ones hobby might be “pixel peeping” or taking photos - I’m the latter. Just go and shoot. In this point in time I think Light Lens Lab are making more interesting lenses for Leica than Leica themselves. Unless you want to wear jewellery.
Thanks Jose! Agree I bought these as they interest me (this and the 50s). I dont have the early Cron and only the 3.5 35mm so its a nice addition to the team! Yes I’m excited to start using it.
I’m really liking the V 40mm Heliar. It looks nicer than the LLL imo.
Yes! Awesome lens, extremely light too.
But why not the V 40mm f1.2 Nokton ASPH?
@@GurmeetSingh-fr8uo almost nice but not LTM and bigger
Crazy small… when collapsed is as small as a 35ultron. Lol
Slightly smaller, 35mm Skopar probably (without comparing) but the bonus it’s LTM (vs. Ultron)
A lens is like your nose. First thing people see. Imagine. I spent $9,200 on my Leica body. And the first thing people see is CHINA when I point it at them 😅 oh brother. I guess it’s like when Leica used to put CANADA in front of their lenses.
except Canada is not… China haha, not even close
@@slothsarecool exactly
Haha thanks Carlos. My best portrait lens is Canada lens.. Show "the people" 1 photo and they'll soon forget the letters ;) ..or use a UV filter/ hood
Those damned Made and designed Mandler lenses designed by Mandler in Canada.
@@ofeykalakar1 clearly you’re both missing my point. I’ll spell it out. “They shouldn’t try to be Leica putting CANADA in front of their lenses because CHINA is NOT CANADA”. Even Leica started just putting “LEITZ” on those Canadian lenses without the CANADA.
Unfortunately for them, CHINA = Cheap & Shit. So they should try to hide it as much as possible. I can’t think of any lens manufacturer that puts the country in front of their lenses. It’s ridiculous.
You don’t see Leica putting JAPAN on their filters either. (Spell that out. I love things made in Japan… see because JAPAN ≠ CHINA and Japan is associated with good products”)… it’s exhausting writing when you have to explain everything.
And my favorite Leica lens is the 50 Summicron (I’ll spell it out too. The 50 Summicron is a Mandler lens and I love the mandler lenses)…
🙄
Sorry but this is a bit of a poor mans test.
Tour test: First looks okay, zoom in, sharpness, bokeh, that's all ROLLING EYES
You only look in the middle of the frame and don't pay any attention to the corners.
There is almost no measurements of vignetting over the range, focus shift, distortion, aberration, flair etc. the works
Things that are important when one want to choose/purchase a lens in that series .
Thanks Rob, sorry it was only a quick test and looking at what I use for portraits. Centre sharpness and bokeh. It wasn’t a suitable test for other characteristics so I skipped these
It is NOT a Summicron!
😡
It is a near exact replica of a Summicron (optically) I've bought this and the ELCAN (also based on a Summicron - Military version) for the look they give. Most people don't know of these versiosns so I put Summicron to help people who are searching for f2 lenses for Leica.
Okay, I get it that you bought these lenses with your own money and you really want them to work out ("endowment effect" is is definitely a real thing!) and I love the idea of encouraging boutique lens makers, but I just don't see the appeal here. Highlights flare badly away from the center (e.g. at 09:13) and the bright-ringed bokeh balls seem harsh. It isn't even all that compact compared to, for example, my early-1960s 35mm f/2 Canon lens, and I don't have to worry about forgetting to extend the Canon before taking pictures! (Fess up, how many times have you done that when using the collapsible LLL on your film camera?🙊) To me it seems like one of those lenses that's weird without being interesting, whereas the Elcan you tested earlier is aggressively weird enough to be interesting! And of course that's the one that LLL decided to stop making... grrr...
Thanks James, fair points! I am excited by the size so it’ll be my new carry everywhere small 35mm. ELCAN will be the 50mm. After real works use I can represent the lens better, good or bad! Soon!
Thanks Matt. Optically, whatever. If you like it, that's great, and no one can tell you that it's not great. However, it does seem expensive for something that has CHINA writ large on the front of the lens. Yes, one might even say that's prejudicial but you'd be kidding yourself if people (including models and clients) didn't have those marketing biases. And it's seems wholly unnecessary too. Not even Leica has GERMANY engraved on the front of the lens.
Thanks, yes I did tell them this in a feedback email..
Leica did have huge GERMANY (and CANADA in some cases) on the front of their lenses. There should be nothing wrong for the manufacturer to be proud of their Chinese background.
@@erwinc.9117 Oh absolutely. If read you my text carefully you will see that I noted that this was a prejudicial reflex of photo gear buyers as well as an overall perception of German and Swiss dominance in the field of precision optics and mechanics. But read the other comments. So many are saying, "China? Hard pass." That is the way many people will react. Right or wrong that's just the way it is. It is interesting that Leica had indeed in the past put CANADA on some of their lenses and on the M4s but never JAPAN on their CLs! Later there would be the Leitz Minolta branding but never the country. If they were transparent about Canadian manufacturing, why not Japanese manufacturing? The answer is that Leica understands the bias of its customer base. That bias is still alive and well.
I feel like the 3d pop is a lot nicer at f2.8. Would shoot at that over getting the nicest bokeh imho
Hey Vic! Yes and you dont need bokeh in many photos so I agree
I also really enjoy using my 35mm light lens lab… rigid version
Great! Yes i've been impressed so far
Thank you for the review that only Matt can give.
I am using leica cl film, Voigtländer Nokton 40mm f1.4
Looking to buy Voigtländer Heliar 40mm f2.8 lens
This video was a good reference. Thank you.
Thank you!
Hi, love the pouch!
Which one is it?
Thanks John! Linked below! - It's called accessory ,, something, you'll see it
Hey Matt, thanks for your video. I have just got this lens. I don't see the aperture indicator on its barrel. What reference point do you use for your aperture?
Hi Eric, great. Yes that is an annoying design flaw. I used a pencil to mark the aperture setting.
good video matt, but one other cavert with the colapsible lenses, they can't work with All cameras, some digital's sensors are too close (aka you CAN'T collapse the lens without bumping the mirror)- this applied to the older 50 collapsable summicron, from memmory, But I may be wrong.
Thanks Andy, no it depends on each lens. 1) All lens can be used just don't collapse them, 2) this one goes flat on my CL but others dont so it has that advantage.
Awe no f4 for the last 35mm skopar
Skopar is good but I'm enjoying the small LLL LTM lens
Yes the SKopar is a great performer and small but I'm loving the even smaller LLL LTM at the moment
I was referencing that the comparison only showed the skopar and LLL at f2.8. However great comparison videos regardless.
I am really considering the 35mm LLL f/2 LTM for the flexibility of using it across my LTM and M bodies.
Great video as always Matt. Do you just apply the wording 'MRLEICA' when ordering the Light Lens Lab to get the discount? Also what is the make of the soft pouch in your last video. Many thanks.
Thanks Mark, yes to LLL if you buy from them direct (like on MrLeica kit list page), and pouch info linked below video - i'll do more on that in the future and feature in the next blog newsletter.
I have a Rollei 40mm f2.8 Sonnar for LTM. Quite rare but absolutely awesome. Small and light but makes amazing images. Has that charm of Sonnar/Tessar design.
Nice Erwin! I looked at that lens years ago but never bought one.
The lens shown at the 1:20 marks is the 50mm "Elcan" replica, not the rigid 8-element, it is the same basic size though.
Thanks, I can't remember what I said but yes it'll be the ELCAN replica as I don''t own the 8E rigid.
with ltm lenses on leica m cameras are they rangefinder coupled or do you have zone focus as i have never adaped lenses to my m mount camera thanks great videos
As with M lenses, the vast majority are RF coupled. Basically they are designed for the LTM RF cameras such as the small Leica iii cameras I talk about a lot.
Question, did you have to pay for import duties for this lens? I’m tempted to buy the 50mm, but scared to pay the extra money in the UK
Buy via the link on MrLeica.com kitlist page and they don't charge import fees (not affiliated)
yay i was hoping you'd do this lens next since my m8 has a crop factor
It sits when on my CL too so i'll use for FF and APS-C
Matt, I recently bought a Color Skopar and it's blue vignetting like crazy on my Sigma fp L. Any thoughts?
Hi, hmm no I've not heard that before. It might be the deeper focus stack on Sigma (and RF lenses are less suited). 21mm Skopar can give purple edges on some M bodies but not 35mm
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom The fpL has a lens compensation setting to adjust the colour vignetting in-camera so all good!

Do you like the Ricoh GR IIIX?
No I like manual cameras where I can change lenses.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom are Sony G Master lens as good as the best manual lens ?
Is this compatible with the M39 thread mount Zorki 4 rangefinder?
Hi Mark, yes all M39/L39/LTM cameras ..you'll need a 35mm finder*
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thank you Matt. Love your channel.
I feel like that APO disclaimer was directed at me lol
Haha no :)
I was very surprised to learn that Laowa makes a 14-24 f/5.6 lens for Leica M mount that no one seems to be talking about. Every review is talking about the mirrorless mount versions or adapting it. But it sounds like a phenomenal bargain for Leica M shooters. Its even rangefinder coupled and its $700
I was surprised to learn about this, too, but couldn't help wondering: if you're going to focus it with the rangefinder, what do you use for a viewfinder? If you need to use live view to aim it, you might as well focus it that way too, right? It's not something I would buy myself, but I'd love to see Matt (or someone) give us a demo…
@@jlwilliams if you're not picky about framing, you can use the viewfinder to at least center your image, you can also get a specific focal length cold shoe viewfinder if you mainly plan to use it at one focal length, or you can get Leica's wide angle universal finder (other manufacturers also have made viewfinders with multiple focal lengths
Thanks Kevin. Is that RF coupled too?
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom yes
👍👍👍
Nice lens and like the Wotancraft 😊
Hey thanks Mark! Yes, more on the pouch to come!
Wow the lens looks so great wide open! 😍
Hey Tobi! Yes very usable for sure! I think you'll love it!
Thanks Matt! My only objection to the superb LLL 35mm lens is the association with the name Summicron, which is a descriptor of lenses built by Leica and no one else. There seems to have been a deliberate attempt to blur the distinction between LLL and Leica in this regard, and someone should set the record straight.
Point 2: I belong to the senior cohort of Leica users who have used film for decades before the advent of digital. Very few of us have heard of bokeh, at least until recently. I, for one, do not understand why it is so fascinating.
Thanks and for your experience. I think bokeh has become more facinating in the digital era. Full video to come as mentioned which will cover optical formula, links to Leica Summicron etc etc, this was just a test so I know if it's good enough to use for my shoots and to share that with others interested.
Bokeh was a thing in Japan long before it was in the US or Germany. In 1967-68 a small group of Japanese photographers known as the Provoke Collective began promoting the view that society was becoming too fixated on media representations rather on real experience; one tool they used to dramatize the difference was a picture-style that was exaggeratedly "photographic," and was derided in the Japanese photo press as "are bure bokeh" (rough translation: grainy, blurry, and out of focus.) Although Provoke was widely ridiculed at the time, eventually its ideas were recognized as important and influential; the concept of bokeh in particular, as a "signature" of photographic images, eventually spread to the West.
It looks like LLL has dropped using Summicron in their advertising now and just uses "8-element".
Another beautiful LLL lens. I have the LLL 50mm Elcan and was tempted enough to buy the 35mm rigid in black as well. I put B+W filters on all my best lenses, either 007 clear or 010 UV. With the filter on the "CHINA" in dull red lettering is hardly noticeable. In fact, without the addition of filter it is barely noticeable. I was more interested in the quality of the optics and build anyway, so that label didn't bother me that much.
Thanks Rick, agree. For anyone bothered by it use a filter or hood.
what's wrong w that CHINA lettering? you think having GERMAN or USA written on something would make it superior? j dump the lens if you'd have to cover up that marking lol
China again 😅 nahh
Better than nazis
Leica design made in China ..as I see it. I don't mind that.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I just don’t want to support China as long as they support Russia
The huge CHINA letters make this a non event for me
Huh
I feel it would be a lot more popular without those letters but I buy stuff to use them.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom for sure many more would consider it including me. And for the record I would feel the same if it was any others country’s name in there. It’s just too big and glaring and loud.
@@SeahawkMomentsrethink that. You sure? If it said Germany, England, USA, etc would it bother you? In my opinion, they are proud of their product and country. There’s nothing wrong with it. I give them more respect for not hiding the facts.
@@bjmarchives nope. I want the lens and glass front and center. Not a country’s name. We selling a country or a lens?
I prefer the 40mm VC f/1.4 which is interesting because its so inexpensive. The LLL seems like its for people who really want the quirks of the old Leica glass--particularly the soap-bubble bokeh. Its hard to see this LLL lens being worth the money.
Yes I hear you. I bought this for the size mostly (size and being LTM). As my photography matures I really value small kit.
