  • Barnabas von Geczy mit seinem Orchestra - Schwarze Orchideen (Black Orchids) Tango (Richartz), Electrola 1937 (Germany)
NOTE: Barnabas von Geczy was truly, a master in artistic tango playing. His "magic violin" - as they called it in the Electrola ads in the 1930s - made the simplest tunes - nearly a lyric poem. Also today, listening to the sophisticated, elegant arrangements of that Budapest-born bandleader and composer, provides many of us with lots of emotion and satisfaction. That highest level of artistry was probably the reason why after 1945 most of his recordings were still re-pressed and distribuited throughout the world by international record companies, including His Master's Voice in UK and France - despite totally untamed collaboration of Barnabas von Geczy with the nazi radio and all possible record companies and film productions in the Third Reich. (It's been said, that Barnabas v. Geczy's was Adolf Hitler's favourite band).

Thanks for this sheer delight, a most welcome distraction--however brief--from the terrible events taking place day after day...

I just answered Franka in Polish, and I'll try to write the same for you in English: This tango is like a little poem. So artfully instrumentalized as a tiny jeweled casket .And it spins around, sending multicolored rays.

Como argentino debo reconocer que este delicado y bello tango no tiene nada que envidiarle a un tango argentino, tiene la misma calidad y estilo, no es una parodia como muchas de Hollywood.
Además de ser de una época gloriosa de Alemania.

Genia, that frock you choose looks perfect! I wonder if you'd like me and Rudy come in the matelot outfits just like those at 1:54 - and certainly, with those wonderful pompons on the hats! And we must do some training before our night at Femina in Berlin! I suggest a 5 o'clock dach-tanz party at Savoy and - in a dinner time - one or two galopp-polkas between courses.

Poezja!

Hello Grzegorz and everybody who "clicks" here - this Tango by Barnabas von Geczy - is arranged superbly with the even, ten beat measure - a heaven for the dancers. Your visuals present a terrific collage of international Tango flavors. Thanks a million from me and other Tango "addicts". Have a great Sunday - Grzegorz and all of us. Greetings from rainy (so - thank God - not hot), hilly neighborhood of New York City.

The arrangement is so, I should say - picturesque, that I can easily imagine you doing all most sophisticated tango figures to this tune. Good night, Lana and thank you :-)

To tango jest jak poemacik. Tak kunsztownie zinstrumentalizowane, jak wysadzana klejnocikami szkatułka.

I would be very interested in learning about his life post WW2 and what happened to him later. He seemed to disappear after about 1947, the only records being these pre war ones. Can you tell me?

Romantic, stately and yet also playful -- which may be a difficult combination for a tango, so sensual in nature, to achieve! I see in the comments that you were striving for a theme of whimsicality with the images -- you have succeeded masterfully. 1:27 is cute, cute, CUTE!

Thank you, Elisabeth. I totally second your enthusiasm about the outrageous drawing by Marcel Vertès at 1:27 . It's only a detail, though. I should have noted, it's only a part of a bigger drawing (which presents the humoristic view of the Parisian school of dance in 1925).
