Controversial art makes people question their own selves/morals, and this eventually gains momentum in the public eye. A lot of Banksy's work is commentary on society. PR talent, perhaps, but he doesn't ever ask for public attention (in the form of his actual self) so at least that says he uses "PR with integrity" - in fact, Banksy himself makes the same argument you're making - there is nothing special about Banksy's work (his recent video on selling art on the streets of NYC makes this point)

I ask myself what would have happen if he did not publish his works on his website. How fast his residency would have been noticed? What would happen to his work?
By the way, nice video. It is always great to see what happens after the news broke.

I just don't get the media's and the public's fascination with Banksy. There's nothing of his (hers? theirs?) that I've seen that doesn't look like it would be out of place in the portfolio of someone applying to a Master of Fine Arts programme. He's got good draughting skills, has the requisite lefty-progressive political POV, But his manin skill seems to be leveraging his PR talents.

    Essentially.
I don't really get it. I know there's apparently a cultural thing behind graffiti, but this is just nonsense to me.

You want nonsense, check out Black Circle by Malevich, he earned millions with this painting along with others in its collection.
Not to mention Marcel Duchamp, Rothko or fucking Pollack
Compared to them, some street art is equal to Joseph Ducreux

I used to be a big fan of Banksy till i found out he stole most of his ideas from Blek le rat. If he got inspiration but did something original of his own that would've been great. No problem, but it seems like he steals the design and just puts a quote over it.
