Hi. Have we met? If so, I hope I was nice. You were great. Thank you.
Oh, also: HANK AND I ARE GOING ON (a very brief) TOUR. We will be in Madison, Wisconsin on August 16th and Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 18th. www.hankandjohn.com/appearances

vlogbrothers John, we haven’t met, but possibly even weirder, we’ve been in the same room twice and we have a mutual acquaintance! I came to both the tfios and Paper towns movie tour stops when they were in Ohio and I have a friend named Nathaniel who has been your waiter several time at one of your favorite restaurants in Indy! My best friend goes to school at Butler and every time I visit her I cross my fingers that we’ll run into each other! 😅

John. I talked on the phone with you once while you were promoting Turtles All The Way Down. I was way more articulate than I thought I would be. We even had a brief conversation about star-struckedness. But you asked me what I was studying in college and I told you I was trying to become a high-school math teacher, and you told me I was doing "incredibly important work". That was a real motivator for me in a pretty dark time in my life, and I'm happy to say that I'm still on that career path, and I have one more year left of school. So thanks, John. DFTBA ❤

Aha, but he planned that video, right? He wrote it out first, or at least a general outline of it. He writes such beautiful things (and Hank writes absolutely remarkable ones), but he has to Think about them first, as most socially anxious people do. If someone is confronted suddenly, without warning, without time for preparation, especially one who has trouble in social situations, they will inevitably not be able to express themselves in the way that they'd like to. We just can't think on the spot like that. Which is why people like us leave surprising encounters thinking, "I should've said this or that, or shaken their hand a little differently, or kept better eye contact, or used a different phrase there, they must've thought I was so weird and unintelligent and annoying," etc etc.

So here's a fun thing to think about: every single person you will ever meet (even friends and family) has a vastly different experience of the you that they know. We all share different things with different people and those moments go on to sculpt a version of yourself that you ultimately have very little control over. Even moreso after considering the multitude of emotions that every person will attribute to you. The person that saw you trip before quickly finding your footing and continuing to walk on as if nothing happened? Your teachers? Your students? Parents? Lovers? There are a vast number of different 'yous' out there, residing solely in the minds of others.

This is such an interesting video because I remember when I first met John Green, he was greeting people in a line at VidCon (I think 2015 or 2016). I shook his hand nervously and all that could come out of my mouth was, "You are a very smart man." and he said "Thank you." and went on. I never even got a picture, so it was an awkward moment that I get to keep to myself for the rest of my life, but it's so surreal how he experiences it too.

I've been watching your videos since 2007, wrote my undergraduate dissertation about Nerdfighteria back in 2013, and am now doing a PhD about UA-cam content creators at the LSE, in large part thanks to the VlogBrothers. I hope that I'll get to tell you in person one day, but absent that, I guess I gotta cross my fingers that you see this comment.
You and Hank are extremely important to me. 2014 was a year which gave me my daughter, but it also gave me the start of a custody war that lasted almost 2 years. I hope that stays the darkest part of my life. During that time, I had an hour drive to and from work. In early 2015 I found Crash Course, a milestone in my life I'd compare to humanity's milestones of the discovery penicillin or fire or Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Through that I learned that I love world history, and I'd really love to be a history teacher.
That's one piece of the puzzle, but through Crash Course, I found this channel. This channel has contributed to my life in a way I could never adequately express.
This channel has taught me a lot. But the most important thing it taught me is that I deserve love. And that it's okay to love myself. That I SHOULD love myself. And while I'm at it, I should love others. And that it's okay, and possible, to show other how much there is to love about the world as it already is.
Your influence on my life is incomparably beautiful. You and Hank have helped me understand myself and others in ways I may never have found if you didn't show them to me. And I'm only one of millions of people who will be affected by the unapologetically empathetic and sincere voices of reason you two have proven to be.
To quote someone I look up to: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

In these moments I can be really shy. I met a UA-camr I watched while on a school trip to a different country. It was so unlikely to happen. The chances of me and that person being in the same room together were so slim and I met them in Primark on a Tuesday. It was probably the most mundane Tuesday in their life but for me it was special.
It's nice to know that even people who are so well known and successful aren't immune to this feeling.

I experienced a small bit of celebrity while touring Korea doing English camps. Because we sang and danced to upbeat, fun songs, the children loved us. They asked for pictures and autographs. That feeling of myself as someone other than me was really weird to be honest. I can't imagine being any more famous than that and what mixture of stress and delight that must be.

That was basically me this past Friday, when I met you and Hank at VidCon. I didn’t scream, but I wasn’t able to tell you how much I appreciate everything that you do: the videos, the podcasts, the books, P4A etc. But this video reassures me that I shouldn’t feel that bad about not being able to tell you. For me, it’s just so much easier to tell you in writing...
(And: being star struck and having to communicate in your second language doesn’t help either)

I don't know why, but watching your videos always makes me feel both happy and thoughtful, it doesn't matter what I'm doing or how I'm feeling at the time it just does. I had a similar star-struck experience when meeting Cassandra Clare at a book signing, I had a question I desperately wanted to ask but ended up just smiling awkwardly and saying thanks, she was really cool about it though and asked me who my favourite character is(Jace).
P.s- I remember screaming when you replied to my youtube comment- totally made my day

About 6 years ago, a classmate of mine told me that you, John, were going to be at my favorite book store in Chicago, so I raced there as fast as I could, assuming that it was some sort of nerdfighter meet-up I hadn't heard about. When I got there, I saw you at the cash register and immediately realized that you were just, y'know, going to the bookstore, and I was immediately overwhelmed with embarrassment and shame; I had literally called my mom as if it were an emergency to get me to that store as quickly as I could, only to be faced with a man just trying to enjoy himself at one of the most lovely shops in the city. You still took a photo with me, and it made me so, so happy. Thank you for your kindness and generosity, and you're welcome for being in this community and loving your work for over 7 years.

    Dear John,
I once saw you in New York City while I was visiting for a tap dance festival about 5 or 6 years ago. You were across the street and I was about to get into a taxi. I was so unbelievably star struck just by seeing you that I panicked, stepped away from the taxi for a moment about to rush over to you, then thought it better not to bother you as you were probably going to something important, and proceeded to get back into the taxi. To this day I’ve beat myself up over not coming to greet you and tell you how big of a fan I am of your books, or how you are one of my favorite authors, if not my favorite author.
However I’m still thankful that I had the opportunity to even see you in the flesh, and of all places, randomly in New York City!
I hope you’ll come to Michigan at some point.
(P.S. I read Looking for Alaska in 2013 and it is still my favorite book. Thank YOU.)

Months after appearing in a T.V show last year for showing my sand animation stuff, I entered Kaldi's cafe because it was raining outside, and I noticed that a couple of young girls and their mother were staring at me. I felt so uncomfortable and confused, I didn't know what it was about. Then, the little girl got up to me and asked for an autograph. She had a cute frozen smile on her face, and her sister and mother watched on. What you said really makes sense. I felt so shocked and amazed: at the time, I only appeared on T.V once. How did they remember my face? When I wrote something for the girl, I took a picture of it myself, because the experience was surreal for me too. But like you said, expressing gratitude may sound like an easy thing to do, but in moments like these, it tends to sound like a canned thing. Thank you, John. This video, as always was a lovely video essay. Please keep doing this. And come back to Ethiopia whenever :) -w

Ironically I just met Hank last night (2 weeks after you posted this video) in Austin for his paperback release tour and I really can say I am feeling this. You have both influenced me in a huge way and at 31 years old I will admit now that I am not above feeling star struck. I know you are just people like me but to me you have become icons. Now I've spent the past 16 hours overanalyzing the brief moment I spent with Hank. I did thank him, I even had a gift for him. However I still felt mortified in hindsight. But re watching this video has really helped me.
So John, Hank, I want to say thank you. Thank you for everything. Thank you Hank for taking the time to meet me and thank you John for helping me get through it. I know you may never see this in the over 1000 comments already in this video, but if you ever do, thank you.

I have indeed met you John and Hank Green and the experience was not at all fleeting for me! My dad drove me down to New Orleans on 16th birthday (on a school night btw lol) to see your book talk on the newly released The Fault In Our Stars. I got a DFTBA shirt that I still wear and still meet other nerdfighters with. I met another girl in line with me and it was also her birthday. When I met you you were kind , humble and funny. You wrote Happy Birthday in my copy of the Book and Hank drew a hanklerfish with a birthday hat on it. Then he briefly panicked asking me if that was okay which of course it was! I was so happy about it!!! Its still a wonderful memory I share with others and sometimes I open the book just to smile at it . Im not someone who super participates in fan culture anymore , but its still a memory I care a lot about because you have put so much good into the world. And its helped inspire me and so many others to be awesome everyday. Thank you for caring

I've never *met* John or Hank per say, but during one of the P4A's (I think it was 2013?) a video I'd made ended up on the stream, and after watching it Hank said, "Wow, I hope this person has a job making videos for a living." Six years later I work full-time as a producer, and I still think about this distant yet weirdly personal interaction all the time. I know it has to be incredibly weird to be on the receiving end of someone's fandom, and having that kind of place of perceived authority can only make it weirder I imagine, but if any couple of guys have to be trusted with that authority, I'm glad it's these two. Great video, John, and thanks, Hank, for the vote of confidence all those years ago!

Thank you for this video!! I met some of my favorite youtubers not to long ago and I was SO NERVOUS AND EXCITED to speak to them and get pictures, but afterwards felt weird because our meeting was so very brief. All that anticipation for a fleeting moment. I have been watching them for years and I have so much appreciation of their videos and who they are as people that I felt as if I would never be able to express how much they mean to me, ESPECIALLY not in 1-minute's time , and then I think of how many thousands of people must feel the same way about them! But this video makes me feel at peace knowing that they are probably just as appreciative of all of their fans as you are of yours, John.
Which reminds me, when I met Hank I was so nervous that I had a really stupid smile when I took a picture with him and I still cringe at myself when I look at it lol

We met in SF. I was going through an incredibly troubling time in my life. Your kindness was a wonderful breath of fresh air. I regret that I didn’t use the time to thank you for how your books had felt like home when I desperately needed one. I wish I would have said something better than, “What’s the first word you think of when you look at me?”
    You responded with, “Lovely”
Shortly after that we parted ways. Even though I wish I had said something completely different, you telling me that you looked at me and thought “Lovely” meant the world to me. It was something I would cling to on days that were extremely hard.
I am now a teacher, and I make it a point to make sure my students know that they are lovely in so many ways.
I hope that if we cross paths again one day I can thank you properly.

I met you once at the ALA Conference dinner when you won an honor for An Abundance of Katherines. As a Katharine myself, I introduced myself as such and your reaction was caught-off guard and mildly overwhelmed at the gaggle of enthusiastic and loud teenagers that had invaded an otherwise very calm Conference and award banquet.
That said, I think I appreciate the awkwardness and off-handedness more than I would've a thought-out, rehearsed, smooth interaction. It was a friendly way for my young self to realize that, hey, the people you look up to *are* just people and they probably feel awkward and flustered too.
This has helped me out a lot. I have been able to forge friendships I value with people that others regard as famous without the awkwardness of fanhood becoming too much of a burden. And I am very grateful for that perspective.
Thank you for being taken aback and genuine. It was a wonderful way to meet you, even if maybe you didnt feel confident in it at the time.

    Dear Hank and John.
I first came across vlogbrothers several years ago following a link sent by a friend in which you went through the issues of the US healthcare system and have been a major fan since. We have never met and in fact I live in Milton Keynes in the UK so probably not John's favourite place! I just felt this was a good video and opportunity to say that your work on vlogbrothers have always provided me with a lot of comfort and hope in an increasingly troublesome world.
I am in my mid thirties happily married with a good job and two wonderful kids and so have nothing to complain about really. That said when I feel like the stresses of providing for my family or what the future for my children will hold your videos have given me something of an anchor to know that good people with good intentions are still prevalent in the world today and that learning and intelligence are still to be aspired to and not the enemy.
    Kind regards and thank you
    Damian
