Matthew Vaughn brings his comic book movie flair to a clever take on the "spy thriller". Does it work, or is it all style over substance? Here's my review for ARGYLLE! #ArgylleMovie #Argylle

Mission impossible dead reckoning is the perfect example of having fun, not taking itself too seriously all the time but always respecting the audience and giving us action scenes that are hugely thrilling instead of stupid. Mathew Vaughn is trying to do mission impossible with none of the realism or good writing.
Eh, Dead Reckoning felt like a step down from Fallout. It dabbles with too many plot threads, throws in too many characters, and the final train sequence is 10 mins too long. Plus the way they disposed of Ilsa's story to set up a romance with Grace was absolutely awful.
@@Baronnax It's absolutely a step down from Fallout, also wasn't a fan of Ilsa's story being cut short, but I loved Grace's character and I didn't want the train sequence to end. The movie as a whole was absolutely stellar IMO. I doubt fallout will ever be topped but it doesn't need to be. Each to their own but the more I think about Dead Reckoning the more I appreciate it, especially the AI plot which in a 90's movie would feel unrealistic and silly, but it came out at the perfect time that it's scarily realistic.
So a fun movie with an identity crisis that may have me squirming nearing the two hour mark. Well, I was looking forward to this. Edit: I saw it and had a lot of fun with it! I don’t agree with a single criticism I’ve heard lobbied against this film at all. Even now understanding the context, the poster and advertising make sense to me.
I've literally just skipped January as a whole when it comes to movies lol. I'm just waiting for the ATLA remake at the end of February cause THAT at least looks really good.
Dunno about that one either tbh. Apparently they make character changes like Sokka's sexism at the start. Which screams of red flags because that was a major character arc moment for him.
@@MrBrock314 True. But it was part of his character. It's like keeping Aang a whimp throughout the show (even tho he toughens up especially after meeting Toph).
The movie was what I expected from the trailer. Fun and over the top. I loved it. I didn't go for Henry Caville, I went to see a recluse cat lady caught up in the spy world. They promised an old school cartoony, comedic almost Austin Powers like movie in the trailer and that's what I watched. You can tell the tone of Bee keeper is very different and I'll watch that too and enjoy it.
I kind of figured this wasn’t going to be a Henry cavil heavy movie because he is just a character in the book. From watching the trailer I assumed Rockwell would be the bigger star of the movie.
I'm not sure how people didn't realize Henry's dance with Dua was fiction in the book Bryce was writing.... I think the trailer portrayed it accurately, I went in with full understanding Henry wasn't a real character. I thought it was a fun movie! I didn't go in expecting a masterpiece, it was a good time.
This is pretty much what I was expecting from the trailer. I’m more interested in a different Cavill spy movie called “The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare”. That looks really fun. What’s my favorite spy film? It’s hard to pick which one but the James Bond series for being the godfather to the genre.
Is it the best spy film? Definitely not, but GOD damn it was so engaging and fun. I watched it with my mom and we were the only ones in the theater and they had recliners. We got to shout as loud as we wanted during the twists and I gotta be honest it was definitely one of the most fun movie going experiences I've had in long while. Will definitely be buying it on streaming later. Nice to see someone who isn't completely tearing this movie apart review it.
To be honest, even in projects that end up not being good, I don't remember him being at fault. He was the best thing about the Witcher for example. And when the movie helps him, he's very good like in MI Fallout and Man from Uncle.
Great review Jeremy!! Seeing that you reviewed 'The Terminator - 1984', please oh please can you review 'Enemy Of The State - 1998', 'Predator - 1987' & 'Predator 2 - 1990'.
No hate meant, but people seriously need to stop with the "Am I the only one?" comments. You want to be validated, I get it. But do it in a less obnoxious way. You know no one is remotely unique and special enough to ever be "the only one," so why imply that you do think that? Just say "Who else--?"
They stacked the whole trailer around Henry Cavil like he was the star, smh. I was going to see it because I thought he was in it as the star. Lol thanks for letting me know Jeremy
I'm not an English speaker. but that didn't prevent to understand from the trailer that henry cavill is NOT the main protagonist. obviously the poster is reference to the novel wrote by the author character. i think it's fuckin clever.
I don't think you were paying attention to the trailer. Never once was I given the impression the movie centered around Cavil. If I'm wrong, please provide a link to this deceptive trailer.
This reminded me of the Rock's Hercules, which showed all the monsters in the trailer. Turns out, it was all part of a 5-minute montage at the beginning, which never even actually took place for real. Was in for a vegan omelet from there.
I was really excited for this movie, having Cavill on it. But after watching an ad promo for it a couple days ago I got the weird feeling that they were baiting the audience with him. Guess I was right
I did love The Man From U.N.C.L.E. a lot. More than almost everyone else considering how little it gets talked about. However, you watch the trailer you would know he’s not the main character. You’re just arguing with me for no reason.
I think it’s fate that I lost my ticket for tonight. Hearing Cavill is so limited in screen time really turns me off, and I feel like the marketing team did a bait and switch. Thanks Jeremy, as always, for saying it like it is.
I actually really liked this movie, I feel it’s either you love it or hate it kind of movie, there’s gonna be moments where it either sucks you in more or completely take you out of the movie, the best expectations you could have would be to go in not expecting anything masterful but rather a campy spy movie that has a lot of twists , it’s surprisingly the ideal Valentine’s Day movie surprisingly so maybe watching it with someone else would help the experience, but personally I found it to be a fun time that had me guessing in a good way
I find it kinda funny that the trailer started out looking like a sort of Cavill-Cena team up with a James Bond vibe, with even Vaughn coming out and saying the whole reason he casted Cavill was because he fit the Bond vibe, because everyone I talked to wishes the movie was kinda just about them instead of this bait and switch stuff.
Oh man... I was looking forward to see this movie for Henry Cavill. I understand he was supposed to be a fictional character by Bryce Dallas Howard, but I thought he is sort of like the author conscious who guide her when she is scared (basically Jimminy Cricket, but can fight). He is just a cameo and only in it for 5 minutes? I guess I'll skip it

I would've guessed either the cat; or whoever John Cena's playing for 5 seconds. Or the author; or one of the other women; or just Sam Rockwell's character; and literally anyone else BESIDES Henry Cavil.

MI movies are always amazing,, but my fav was fallout. Henry cavil was perfect in it
Don't care!
You mean Ilsa Faust part 1. I was particularly a fan of Ilsa Faust part 2, which funnily enough had Henry Cavill in it
I prefer Ghost Protocol but yeah, Rogue Nation is cool.
Dead Reckoning was terrible in my opinion. Hope they get back on track.
Great another 200 million dollar movie with terrible cgi and the trailer for this movie was so annoying... played in front of every movie in theatres.
I don't what trailer you saw but it was okay.
And this is the guy that's directing Deadpool 3 and saying its going to save the MCU... Yikes
@@broghad8241he’s not directing deadpool 3, that’s shawn levy
Just watched Godzilla Minus one last week and I'm still at awe that only costed like 15 million to make
He isn’t directing Deadpool 3…
Shawn Levy is!
Plus the way they disposed of Ilsa's story to set up a romance with Grace was absolutely awful.
dead reckoning was pure a**
@@Baronnax It's absolutely a step down from Fallout, also wasn't a fan of Ilsa's story being cut short, but I loved Grace's character and I didn't want the train sequence to end.
Nah it sucked....Also flopped
@@lanalan4157 Cool. Enjoy your fast and the furious movies.
Loved your reference to Man From UNCLE, such an awesome movie
Agreed, that movie just absolutely captured my attention for a year or two after it came out.
Totally this was a fun ass popcorn movie with some fun twists.
@@jasonscala7771 Glad you think so!
Damn, their selling me Cavil but he’s in it for a handful of minutes!… argh it still sounds daft fun though
You missed an opportunity --

@@kjoc70 argh-ylle

He’s hardly in the trailer tho… he’s only really marketed a lot on the covers
@@calclark3995he’s only in the movie for 5 minutes so they showed quite a lot of him for a trailer. He’s also in the first part of the trailer.
Just wanna say been watching you since you started youtube, and still my favorite youtuber.
Why? The dude just regurgitates popular opinions
@@1tzyb1tzel I wouldn't consider that the most important trait Sokka had. Getting rid of the boomerang would be far worse.
@@MrBrock314 True. But it was part of his character. It's like keeping Aang a whimp throughout the show (even tho he toughens up especially after meeting Toph).
Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare looks great though!
Thank you for continuing to critique movies in your reviews!
Man Jeremy you're the OG. I created my UA-cam account to subscribe to you and CGP Grey. Thankyou!
I kind of figured this wasn’t going to be a Henry cavil heavy movie because he is just a character in the book. From watching the trailer I assumed Rockwell would be the bigger star of the movie.
Favorite spy film. First "Spy Kids". Thank you for asking.
Was looking forward to this. Thanks for saving me Mr Jahns.
Saw it last night, found it worth seeing, not as good as Kingsman, but much better than the Kingsman sequels
@@lukegustafson4109 I’ll wait a month for it to be on a streaming service.
It's a fun movie!
I’m guessing the cat’s the main character 🐯
Sounds a touch like Romancing the Stone at points of your description....
Although it sounds like a weaker version to be honest.
So more of a Jewel of the Nile situation I guess.
Ronin with Robert DeNiro. One of the few movies Sean Bean survives. =D
This is frustrating, but I really like The Kings Man. Shame we don't get more Cavill.
I hope Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare fully utilizes him!
Henry is rarely in good movies, yet we keep coming to see him lol
but he's a good actor /s ..
He has a terrible agent n Henry is too nice
He's had plenty if good work, though the rest of the movie
To be honest, even in projects that end up not being good, I don't remember him being at fault. He was the best thing about the Witcher for example. And when the movie helps him, he's very good like in MI Fallout and Man from Uncle.
Great review Jeremy!! Seeing that you reviewed 'The Terminator - 1984', please oh please can you review 'Enemy Of The State - 1998', 'Predator - 1987' & 'Predator 2 - 1990'.
Good Grief !! Does Jeremy have to do ALL reviews ... especially films 20 years old?!? Ehhh? Have you not already SEEN them all ???!
He went back to do 'The Terminator - 1984', and he also did 'Taken - 2008'. So, anything is possible.@@warriormanmaxx8991
Don't care what you think 😊
Am I the only one who would have preferred an Argyle movie with Cavill as the lead. Maybe like an over the top James bond spoof. Would have been fun
Yes
Good movie. Better than any recent Marvel/Disney movies.
No hate meant, but people seriously need to stop with the "Am I the only one?" comments. You want to be validated, I get it. But do it in a less obnoxious way. You know no one is remotely unique and special enough to ever be "the only one," so why imply that you do think that? Just say "Who else--?"
@@englishatheart so no then?
5:09 to 5:28 - Great point. Piss poor management kills productive talent.
They stacked the whole trailer around Henry Cavil like he was the star, smh. I was going to see it because I thought he was in it as the star. Lol thanks for letting me know Jeremy
I absolutely hate the bait-n-switch scheme by movie runners like Barbie, marketing Cavil as the Argyle agent when he plays a minor role. BOYCOTT.
I'm not an English speaker. but that didn't prevent to understand from the trailer that henry cavill is NOT the main protagonist. obviously the poster is reference to the novel wrote by the author character. i think it's fuckin clever.
Did yall even watch the trailer? The trailers explicitly state he's a fictional character being written by Bryce Dallas Howard.
I don't think you were paying attention to the trailer. Never once was I given the impression the movie centered around Cavil. If I'm wrong, please provide a link to this deceptive trailer.
@@KevinACarroll1996Who goes to see a movie with Bryce as the lead??
This reminded me of the Rock's Hercules, which showed all the monsters in the trailer. Turns out, it was all part of a 5-minute montage at the beginning, which never even actually took place for real. Was in for a vegan omelet from there.
Spy Game ft. Brad Pitt and Robert Redford. Classic
A great Sam Rockwell movie is Mr Right, him and Anna Kendrick are both fantastic in it. Would love to see your review.

Love bond I love Goldeneye, casino royal and Skyfall
I was really excited for this movie, having Cavill on it.
But after watching an ad promo for it a couple days ago I got the weird feeling that they were baiting the audience with him. Guess I was right
Favorite spy movie? Probably True Lies (1994), with Kingsman (2014) and Red Sparrow (2018) as my 2nd and 3rd choices.
I did love The Man From U.N.C.L.E. a lot. More than almost everyone else considering how little it gets talked about. I loved the characters - I thought the story was clever without being confusing - and the heroes acted like heroes. Also, I am sucker for those Guy Ritchie stylized touches. Perfect 60's vibe.
Plus Cavill actually tried to sound a little nasally like Robert Vaughn. Not many people caught that.
Loved The Man From U.N.C.L.E. And it’s a movie not talked about but loved by many. Also a possible sequel may be in the works
@@creativeglowltd you made my day by even giving me hope that this is possible.
I bet the pitch meeting for this movie started off "Remember that moving 'Romancing the Stone'?"
Alamo Drafthouse theater actually played a "Romancing the Stone" trailer before the movie.
What hooked me into wanting to watch this movie is Henry Cavill having scenes with John Cena. I feel I'm going to be disappointed
I agree about the lack of John Cena.
Has a modern day Romancing the Stone feel to it. Another great video, keep them coming!!
Did you watch the lost City with Sandra Bullock as main character? They did copying romancing the stone too
It always sucks when your favourite actor is only in the movie for five minutes.
Kinda upset that they mislead whose the stars of these movie. Really looking forward to seeing Henry Cavil and Dua Lipa
The trailer wasn’t misleading. If you saw it you knew he’s not the main character. He’s a fictional character the author wrote.

Love the Bourne trilogy but prob my fav spy movie is MI Fallout.
Thank you Jeremy for the entertaining and informative review as always but for also defending the VFX arists
I guess it's fitting that the poster promises a 'lie'
I find it kinda funny that the trailer started out looking like a sort of Cavill-Cena team up with a James Bond vibe, with even Vaughn coming out and saying the whole reason he casted Cavill was because he fit the Bond vibe, because everyone I talked to wishes the movie was kinda just about them instead of this bait and switch stuff.
I thought this was a sequel to Man from UNCLE. Thanks for clearing that up.

That's an awesome movie
Movie posters are not about storytelling, they are about who's agent can get them as close to the center. Never heard someone refer to the poster as part of the movie, with the exception of spoilers in the poster.
Sucks Caville wasn’t in the movie more. Hollywood keeps wasting him.
Jeremy looks like he turns into a werewolf at every full moon
I see Matthew Vaughn is keeping to his trend of awkwardly paced and structured spy-comedies.
Usually having an all A list actors cast in a movie is somewhat or kinda a 🚩
At 0:13 My guess is the cat.
I would've guessed either the cat; or whoever John Cena's playing for 5 seconds. Or the author; or one of the other women; or just Sam Rockwell's character; and literally anyone else BESIDES Henry Cavil.
And Jeremy just saved me $15; thank you!
