I use dry leaves in our run. 1) it's free. 2) they love scratching through it. 3) it doesn't get as wet as quick as straw. And the leaves are easier to clean up in the spring.
I think you do a lot for your birds. And your explanation on why you don’t recommend a heat lamp is the best I’ve ever heard. I do pray you are able to protect them from predators this winter. - Sue Sweeten in AZ
My daughter bought me a little pad type warmer for under my chicken waterer it has been a life saver. She got it off temu for 13.00 now i dont have to get up before dawn & change out her water. Worth every penny i didnt even know there was one. It's a little bigger than a coffee warmer perfect for the space she has. 👍
If you do use a water where you twist the bottom, I suggest bringing the water in at night and bring it back out in the morning with fresh water. That's what we do.
Love your videos. I saw your wooden feeder. I tried my hand at building one. It does the job, could you share how you made yours? I think I made mine too narrow. 🐓 Thank you
I don't feed wet foods in winter. I use a modified version of the bird bread with green spirulina, that I fed my parrots. Works wonders with modifications for different species of bird. I just made 48 muffins which will give them 16 meals. Edit to add they have free choice layer mash and layer crumbles.
My pre fab run came with the dumb kind of latch, didn't even match the proper size length as shown in the photo so my dog can just open it. So I have to leave a cinder block on both ends to keep it closed. We only get one or two snow days a year. Last year the cinder block froze to the mud for 3 or 4 days. the water froze. Yet there was a gap between the tarps and roof. Was able to shovel snow into their run. They loved it
Have you considered clear plastic panels? I’m seeing a lot of that on social media. Being in Illinois, I’m trying to learn the best options. I won’t have the ability to run power to the run so heated water bowls isn’t an option for me
Thanks for all the GREAT info!!! God bless you and your sweet family!!!! 🙏❤️🙏

Hi there do you have a name for your main flock rooster

Do you worry about airflow in the run wrapping it up?
What i do for water is bring them in the house and bring them back out when u let them out.
Thats a good idea also
I use a heated water bowl for dogs. I'd be afraid a crockpot would get too warm.
The plastic deteriorates and becomes brittle... and now you have many tiny bits of plastic floating around unless you replace it before that.
