베트남의 현대사에서 빼놓을 수 없는 또 다른 공간을 찾아갔다. 과거 남부 베트남 대통령이 머물렀던 곳으로 대통령궁으로도 불렸으며 현재는 박물관으로 사용되고 있는 곳이다. 프랑스가 퇴각하고 베트남이 분단되면서 1956년부터 남부 베트남 대통령의 관저와 집무실로 쓰였던 곳! 대통령 집무실, 국무 회의실, 외국 대사 접견실, 외빈 접견실, 대통령 침실을 포함한 관저 등등 100여 개의 방으로 이뤄졌다. “독일에서 박물관을 운영하고 있어요. 그래서 전문적인 관점에서 이곳 전체를 살펴보고 있죠. 아주 잘 만들어졌다고 생각해요. 옛 모습을 잘 보존하고 있고 마치 시간 여행을 떠나서 과거로 되돌아간 것 같아요.” 이 건물의 지하에는 또 다른 볼거리가 숨어있다. 바로 지하 벙커다. 과거 수많은 대통령 암살 시도가 있었던 만큼 응오딘지엠 대통령은 기존의 건물을 부수고 대통령궁을 재건축하면서 요새화하기 시작했다. 요새화된 지하 벙커는 베트남 전쟁 당시 미군의 작전 본부로 쓰였다. 그 때 사용하던 작전 지도들이 그대로 전시돼 있어 관광객의 이목을 끈다. 전시에 사용하던 작전 상황실, 지하통제실, 통신실 등이 빼곡히 들어서 있다. 베트남이 현재의 통일국가를 이루기까지 얼마나 많은 전쟁을 거쳐 왔는지 알 수 있는 공간이다. “상당히 놀라워요. 정말 놀라워요. 이 건물이 만들어진 시대를 엿볼 수 있고 역사에 대해 조금이나마 배울 수 있는 것도 좋아요. 대조적인게 놀라웠어요. 위층에는 그토록 크고 화려하고 정교한 공간이 있는데 반해 지하에서는 당시 국가의 심각한 상황들이 진행되고 있었다는 사실이 놀라워요.”
