Yes, the OS and built-in programs plus temp/sleep area take up 16 gigs of space on the Surface RT and other Surface RT tablets like the Asus Vivo RT. In fact, Asus puts a sticker on the outside of the box telling you this.

I have both. I like both. I find myself drawn to the Surface RT more, though the iPad has more apps available, and is running apps that I use daily that are not available for the Surface, yet. So, I find myself still needing an iPad at the same time I am integrating the Surface RT into my personal tech system.
Great review! You covered information relevant to the average user and kept everything unbiased with pros and cons of each product. I especially like that you didn't bog down the review by running "speed tests" of the processor. It was good that you stated on multiple occasions that either the iPad or the Surface would be best depending on the user.

Another great video. I own a Surface and I can't stop using it. Its an amazing tablet.
There's actually no need to partner with Hulu. Since the Surface runs Windows and has Adobe Flash, it's allowed in as a desktop browser.
Being a college student, I am very interested in either one of these devices. I like the way that the iPad is so friendly and flawless in operation, but the Surface has it bested in terms of functionality. I am not too worried about the Surfaces app collection for now, it will grow just like the Android collection did a few years ago.
I am definitely going to get a Surface, the iPad is nice and all, but I think that in terms of productivity, I can do so much more with the Surface.
I ♥ the way that touch cover clicks to the tablet!

I have both, each has its own set of rules to run, simple enjoy them for what they're designed to do -- work or play, best of both worlds.
Full desktop browsing experience on the Surface, support for flash. I can actually look at websites as they were meant to be.
That alone is worth for me.

I really want a surface either RT or PRO but think I'm going to wait until version 2 or 3 looks great though. A PC and tablet in one device is amazing.
The searchbar is intergrated in the UI. you can access it on the right screen options (charm) or press the windows button +Q
The ios app store has been around for a years while the windows 8 app store was recently launched. Don't let the apps get in the way of your desire for the surface because the windows 8 app store just needs a little time to strengthen and I'm sure when it does, it will have some awesome apps.

same thing you could say about ANY device on first release. People forget the initial selling point for tablets from the start was being able to carry the closest thing to a mobile computer and the Surface is the closest thing to it. because reviews haven't used it enough to get comfortable with it is not a reason to discount it
I never noticed how box-like the ipads shape was until I saw this with the ipad next to the Surface rt. It surprises me considering apple made the iphone 5 just longer and not wider. But, I'd have to say I'm going to buy the Surface rt soon. It is just soo much more universal. I personally am not really into big tablets like the ipad and the galaxy note but, the microsoft brought this tablet to a whole new level and it takes away that tablet feel but also isnt a full-on PC. im excited to buy it!

The iPad mini is the same as the regular iPad, for browsing that is. For example, you could only view youtube in a mobile version.
As always, I come to your channel to get the best reviews for tablets and phones. Was actually thinking about getting a Windows 8 tablet, but now I am not so sure if that is the right fit for me. I want a 9 or 10 inch tablet for watching movies, browse the web, shop on Amazon and Ebay, and occasionally read eBooks. Thus, I am thinking an iPad or Android tablet is my best option. Also, I would prefer Android due to the ability to side-load movies via Micro SD card.
Man there's upsides and downsides to all of these tablets, but since I'm focusing on content and not really productivity I think I'm going to go with an Ipad. Thanks for the video!
Ever thought that with a tablet's rear camera it is possible (and viable) to SCAN documents? You can easily scan documents with apps such as "camscanner", transform them to PDF and work on them.
Lovely review as always Lisa. I know you did the comparison between the iPad and Note 10.1, but would now appreciate the Surface v Note 10.1, as im torn between the two for an upcoming purchase. Interested in it for more business use, so really torn between the use of the s pen and Polaris office vs the touch cover , kick stand and ms office. Already have a laptop so not looking for a 'laptop replacement' as such, more for something for use on the go and standing waiting in court

Windows Store now has over 100K apps for the surface. Pretty good for 7 months of growth.
The lack of apps for Surface RT will soon come to an end because alot of developers out there are developing apps for Windows 8 Modern UI. So all those apps will also run on Windows RT modern UI.
I have bought surface and I am very happy with it!!
I love the windows layout and system so much!!! The biggest disadvantages is the horrible lack of selections in the windows app store, that's why i gave up buying a windows tablet.
Microsoft Store also has Box.net. also, the Audio output from Surface RT to headphones or external speakers is surprisingly good, far superior to the Surface RT's built-in speakers.
The only advantage I find on the Surface, is that its 16:9 aspect ratio. That's good when watching movies, but everything else is better on a 4:3 display. Web browsing, picture slideshow, gaming, etc.
Thats 1 reason why Im still leaning towards getting an mini, I have an ipad first gen, so I know what to expect from it etc, and kind of used to the OS. Also I have already bought some apps for iOS
The surface combines ipad icons and android widgets, the live tiles show information and act as app launchers

Surface isn't the only Windows 8 device. Windows 8 still had more sales in the past few months than Macs had in the past few years. The lack of sales isn't primarily due to Windows 8. There has been a lack of sales in computers in general.
it does have search you can press the windows key + "Q" or slide from the right and press the search icon.
07:20 Windows RT still lack of applications (even 2 years later), still can NOT use another browser like Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. This video was done before IOS7 which works much nicer. If you do get a Surface RT, don't expect to sell it.

The ipad is Mono, on the Apple store in the specs it's written " built in speaker" not " speakers" , but who listen to music on a tablet, using built in speakers anyway? .....someone said in the comment section " the screen of the ipad is taller because it's on a stand" but if we look closely, the screen of the ipad starts lower and stops higher than the surfaces one anyway ..as for flashplayer, who cares? nearly every company don't even support flash these days. two beautiful machines anyway :)
After seen your well done Video, I still wonder if it is possible to install previous traditional games or programs (no apps) in the serface. I uderstood from what you say that surface have a specia w8 OS....

Absolutely not true. Surface RT and IE 10 therein have Adobe Flash. My tablet has already gotten two updates for Flash Player.

So it was kind of covered in the review to a point but can you download music to the windows surface from iTunes? I have been using iTunes for a while and I hate the Zune platform. Also I know you can put a micro sd card in to the surface but if you we're to save something to the sd card can you access it from the home screen or do you have to search for it? Thanks your review really helped!
It's a touch cover for a reason. It's not like you can type on a touch screen easily the first time you try it. You have to get used to it.
You can you use you wired controller (not sure about wireless) to play games from the windows store. Hopefully by next year they will start porting most of the xbox arcade games to the windows store.
I am seriously considering the surface but i want to wait and check out the surface with windows 8 pro. Im still trying to decide what would be more practical for me
I hope you know that this is really the first productive tablet. Most other tablets are almost identical to the iPad.
the iPad is great for sitting around the airport playing games or reading. The Surface is better at getting complex tasks completed and is more of a desktop replacement when out of town. Image quality is pretty close when watching movies,but the iPad doesn't support Adobe Flash, which really limits the web browsing experience when video is involved. For me, I would buy the Surface over an iPad, simply because I would get tired of buying apps to access content that the browser doesn't support.
Hi Lisa, I'm not very good with technology, but I'm taking classes online, I usually use my apple desktop for homework, but I bought the new ipad, because I need something in the go, and pay more than 900.00 and can't download some pages because requires adobe reader or flash, something like that. What do u think, surface pro, can work for me? Probably later on, i have to create documents when I'll take other classes. I appreciate your recommendations.

SURFACE HAS FULL DESKTOP BROWSER WITH FLASH BUILT-IN! (so you don't need half of the apps, because you can access services like LoveFilm through the browser). That is important.

The iPad 4 is mono, the iPad mini is stereo.
... and the first iPhone had soooo many apps (remember bo app-store at all) my point is that when something is new it starts off with few apps but with time it will expand.

Rest: If you want more power, the battery won't last as long and it will be even heavier. Laptops are thicker and heavier but have more power and less battery. You have to compromise somewhere.
Apple is like "Keyboard covers! Why didn't we think of that?!" Even though everyone thought that was why the smart cover was, well, smart. Nope, it just locks the iPad, then wakes it back up. Real smart. you can do that with a push of a button already.
Filled with shovelware. It's funny that the surface has a browser that can do many of the things ipad has to do through apps.

I guess you can do it like I do with the kies for my samsung galaxy s3, you can just download the music from itunes and then use the software provided to transfer the songs to your device.
Well I guess different businesses have different point of views on the technology they use. I have seen many businesses use iPads over other overly rated tablets. In my point, Surface is too bulky to be a tablet. I'd rather invest on an ultra book or a MacBook air. I see the whole tablet concept as a portable, less powerful yet portable device to use. So, you can't really except all the computer functionality in them. Plus, there are lots of great productivity apps you can buy for the iPad.

Im just not confident with the surface yet, its still very new, and there probably is not alot of support and apps for it yet. Ill probably still get the mini and maybe later on I might change my mind and get something else... Curious.. how do you use it with your Xbox console?
you can keep up with your friends and your achievements and so on, on all new windows tablets/phones.
Also, the App Store on the Surface does not have a search bar that I can find. That has been a frustration for me with it.
I think you're talking about the Surface Pro, this one is RT, it can only run win 8 apps, which is lacking at the moment.

The surface is much easier to work on, Microsoft software like Power point and Word etc. come with it. Also due to the width, the keyboard is easier to use. And of course the physical keyboard that comes with the surface itself.
the ipad is not taller as she said, it looks like it because it is on a stand she had to buy to show this comparisson while the surface has a built in stand that pops out of its back :D

I really like the Surface but I don't know if I trust Microsoft, I know that the Surface RT has a REALLY nice build quality but I'm not secure! Please Lisa tell me, have you heard or experienced some issues with the tablet? I live in Brazil, so I'll buy it on the US but I'm afraid of it dying, I can't transfer the security service to an other country.
My mate just bought one, even though there aren't many games, head over to flash games in the ie browser and then you have thousands of games and all Free, I'm really tempted in buying one
1) I don´t need a frame to hold it.. I´d just grab it and enjoy that huge working space (bigger screen for movies and games, pictures and the net etc.).. you could also lock some parts of the screen in order to avoid touching it when you wouldn´t want to do that...
2) I expect matte screen. Without reflections. I hate glossy displays coz they make movies and games terrible.
3) I hope so...

The Avengers is 1.85 (16:9). Most films are 2.35:1 and were be more appropriate to show off video playback. I thought you might measure how big the picture is of a 2:35 film on both devices.
Does the Surface RT have the regular desktop too? Or is it strictly the windows 8 mode thing?
So with the microsoft surface could you go on film sites and stuff and it would stream like a normal computer?
you should go with the surface, you can do a lot more with it than you can any apple product. good luck!
i have the same problem before until i watched a video that showed me if you sweep from the right side on any app or what ever on screen the menu that will be shown is specific "the upper part of it" for that app or what ever, so at the app store just sweep from the right and type in the search if your app don't show change the search setting from the same menu

surface for the win. been using since it was released (pre order). having the desktop function is sooooo convenient. does what i want it to do, when i want to do it. This is a much better experience than ipad, I DO KNOW THIS FIRST HAND!
Microsoft should make something where you can use your wireless or wired controller to play the games you downloaded off your xbox live account on the surface. That would fuck shit up for the competitors lol
I think think too that HTML5 is the future because you don't need to download plugins to your browser and every device and browser can show the content the same way. But Surface wins for having Flash support because many sites still use it.
But, Microsoft's keyboard is more innovative, doubles as a screen cover, and is built to be one with the tablet. The iPad's cover will have to be charged and is more bulky, and will drain your iPad by using Bluetooth. Plus, Microsoft Surface also includes the Microsoft Office Suite by default, compared to buying Apple's Numbers separately on iPad. Hope this helps.
The lack of 3G/4G on the Surface RT is a dealbreaker for me. I'll wait for the Surface Pro.
iPad looks like a old tv 4:3, Surface design is awesome, widescreen view 16:9
The kick stand and live tiles are just as unuseful as what he said. The battery life and app support are also pretty useful. The Surface wins, but not by a blowout like you make it to be.
