I loooove barre. There is something really comforting about it - it's like going home. You forget about everything else going on in your life, and just have total, 100% concentration of each movement that you are doing. It's hard work, but it's relaxing.
100% agreed! I especially adore pliés, rond de jambes, fondues and grand battements 😍 gosh I miss ballet so much I’m getting hip surgery in 2 months and hopefully I’ll recover from the injury and I’ll be able to do barre soon ;)
You prolly dont care at all but does any of you know a method to get back into an instagram account..? I somehow forgot my account password. I would love any assistance you can give me
I’m so glad you mentioned the Instagram thing. I have GOTTA get out of the comparison trap. I’m 19 and only started taking class a year ago so sometimes it’s discouraging to see 10 year olds on Instagram dancing like professionals.
some kids start at three, some start when they are adults. everyone is at a different level in all walks of life. those children you see on instagram probably eat, breathe and sleep ballet to be that good. you might be envious of their technique while they may envy you and your social life lol. I know because I started dance when I was 3 years old. I danced for fourteen years and it was before instagram existed , but I'm telling you, don't get caught up in other people's technique level. use it as inspiration, not comparison! see what those kids/teens/adults do to succeed in a pirouette or a jete or anything you struggle in. it will be okay, I promise. dance isn't everything , it's supposed to be fun! I hope this encourages you. sending love 💕
I'm 22 and I just started. I just try to focus on me. Just think that your voluntarily doing something extremely hard that most people wouldn't do because theyd be too intimidated.
I struggle with this so much, may it be in class when there is someone who has been there longer than me and is therefore so amazing and more flexibel or may it be on Instagram when I always ask myself where I would be if I had started ten or more years earlier. What helps me the most, especially in class when I am afraid those good people judge me, is thinking about how they had also been at my point once or what advantage they might have due to doing sth similar before. We all start out a different time and with different conditions, different bodies.
I did ballet for quite a while but nowhere near the level of what some 12 year olds can do. After a long break, because of university I'm trying to get back into dance but it's really hard to not compare yourself to all the incredible dancers online. But everybody is just at the state that they are and all you can really do is work on yourself and enjoy it. Buuuuuut, easier said than done :D :D
Girlfriend in my case, but still true! I used to hang on to the barre so much but since I stopped doing that I have improved a lot especially in terms of balance.
Every few seconds, I felt like giving you a standing ovation! You are SO smart, Katie. Ballet is mentally challenging, and you showcase this. Thank you, thank you, thank you. My favorite part was at 4:44 when you said doing ballet is a GIFT. I’m probably just a couple years older than you, but in my early twenties I had to stop dancing because my mitochondria wouldn’t support the energy dance requires due to chronic illness. I still mourn this and miss it every day. Gratitude can go a long way at the barre!
I'm a professional ballet dancer and a few months ago I ditched instagram. One of the main reasons I used it in the first place was to see ballet dancers that inspire me, as well as video and performance clips. A bunhead through and through! However, as inspiring as it can be to see videos of dancers you aspire to look like, it can be extremely disheartening and negative in a subconscious way. It's so easy to look at these dancers who are so beautiful and often naturally gifted and think "why can't I do that?" or "I wish I was that good." Once I took a break from instagram, I felt that I appreciated myself more, and gave more value to what I bring to this art, rather than dwell on negative comparisons. What Kathryn says is so important. Focus on what you have and work to improve that to the best of your ability. You can't grow into your own individual self as you dream to be someone else. Thank you Kathryn for your amazing videos, which are so helpful for dancers at any level.
I actually really love barre. I find it oddly very relaxing and almost therapeutic haha. I think these tips are all great for anyone, not even just people who are dance students!
Kathryn Morgan for President! No cheating! No shortcuts! Do the work! All. So. True. I'm 58. I know. Real life success does not come from selfie filters. It comes from blood, sweat and tears. Yasss Queen!
Hi Katie, I think you could expand this first point a little bit, and do a video about the barre's theory! You could explain the point of each barre 's exercise , plies, tendus, degages etc. I know you already do it in your barres and technique vídeos, but I think it would be nice a whole video about all of them
Yay new video!! Thanks for all the helpful advice!! I enjoy doing barre a lot and ended up getting one at home. Btw my teacher always tells us “that’s not just a pole, it’s your partner, it’s your dear prince! You are in love! Don’t grab onto him like he owes your money! You will get dumped!” 😂
Beautiful video as always. I have to compliment your figure Katie, you look even more than wonderful. I know it's a result of some not so happy life events, but you made that damn lemonade. I feel like you're some kind of a real life Disney princess - always being so nice, elegant, smart, witty and good hearted. Stay strong, and see you next week. ;)
The second point is so important!! HOLD your body, top to bottom...it's not stiffness or posing, it's just engaging everything...I come from figure skating and I would teach my students that from the very beginning...it's helpful for skating, ballet, yoga, or just going through your day!
I have an adult who dances recreationally, but I really appreciate you taking time to address some of the things that you did in this video. Even though I am not trying for a professional career, I still think that applying a lot of these suggestions will help you show that you take the artform seriously and that you are giving it all due respect.
This was such a great video!! I once heard someone say "if you're not sweating by the end of plies, you're doing it wrong" haha. And totally agree about the Instagram saga - many of those young dancers don't actually have adequate technique or strength for more than just a photo, which is both sad and dangerous. P.S. LOOOOOOOVE the leotard!!! Such a gorgeous style and colour.
I think there’s one more point to add: a lot of people so focus on getting up, balance on Demi, on pointe. But getting down is equivalently important. I see a lot of people just let go after they get a good amount of balance time at the barre instead of controlled down.
I love Barre, when our teacher makes our frappes really fast we all start laughing because all of us will start messing up on the exercise.Thank you for the tips and tricks Katie!
This is one of the most helpful videos I have seen. I just began my dance journey 2 years ago at the age of 33. I have fallen in love with ballet in the last year, and it is so easy to get down on myself and technique. Ballet is a true gift, soul healing. You are wonderful!
Can you do a video for students who aspire to be professionals who start late? I’m super discouraged lately and need some uplifting. Please talk about not being en pointe as well, that’s what’s really getting me lately (I’m 15)
My ballet teacher is very good about explaining cause and effect. He reminds me of how I can do degages and tendus and passe at the barre, and that I need to take that to center. He explains how these annoyingly repetitive drills and combinations and how they'll help us when we get to do a full variation on pointe in front of thousands of people. It's humbling, but also encouraging. He is a really great teacher, director, and coach.
May I ask if you know an Amelia Pelton? She is also from Mobile, Al. She is much older than you but she grew up as a dancer as well. If then name doesn’t ring a bell that’s fine.. just wondering ☺️
Tbh, Barre is my favorite part of class. As much as center is fun, Barre is where I really connect with myself. I feel really centered and focused at Barre, and it's such a good way to put myself in touch with everything.
I love how my ballet teacher explains the use of the basics we do at the barre. E. g. we don't just think about bending our knees when doing plies, we think about energy flowing up, since plies are what brings us up in a pirouette or a jump, like a spring going up and down.
Very thoughtful video. I do like the reminders on energy and the problem of social media. I love barre. I do ballet as a hobby and had never been good at dancing. I think I only was able to start doing it because of the structure of classical ballet, and I'm so grateful for it.
I've always struggled during barre because it gets hard to do so many repetitive movements. I also get very self conscious about my extension or turns like the ones I see on Instagram. Your video helped so much though!
I’m an adult gymnast who used to HATE ballet, but I’ve totally come around. I realize now how important all the positions are. I’m really trying to get my brain around using all of the correct muscles for each position. When I was younger I just wanted to tumble and vault as powerful as possible. Now I’m old and realize how important flexibility and proper technique is :) I just subscribe, hopefully I can use all of ur knowledge to get in better gymnastic shape. Thanks
This made my day. Thank you from my dance heart. So hard being a ballet teacher now days. Your say everything I believe and teach. So great to be confirmed.
Hi Katie, can you please please share your hack for how to remember the choreography or just centre? I have am okay at the bar and position but I suck at the centre. I feel like I do remember the choreo but I panic when it comes to my turn. :/
I love your reminder to not cheat during balancing exercises. I have found ballence to be the hardest thing coming back to ballet as an adult. I see now I need to change my mindset and focus on where I am and take risks.
I love barre! It's such a great place where I can focus on how my body feels, it's almost like a meditation for me! These tips are great. Thanks so much!
As a Disney parade dancer (Youth Dance the Magic Holiday), I completely agree with 2:42, expression and livelyness(if thats a word) your upper body works it what makes it exciting for your audience, the feet are the wow factor in my opinion, equally important.
Hi Miss. Morgan! I would absolutely love to see a video on the differences of the Balanchine style! You mentioned some things in this video about the Balanchine style that I thought was very interesting and as someone who would possibly really love to dance at some place like nycb or mcb I would rly appreciate that video. ❤️
katherine smith yes please! I think that is super interesting!! I got my dance degree and my technique is French, I’ve also danced in England and I’ve had Russian and Cuban teachers. But apart from “the claw” hand position, I don’t jnow much about Balanchine’s technical particularities, and I’d love to xx
“next time on what’s wrong with the world” omg I actually lol’d...hahaha love you Katie. Your vids are the best and motivate me more than you know. Every video reignites my passion for ballet 💘
By the way , I’m so grateful for your videos and your podcast . I have “only “ been dancing ballet for 2 years as an adult , but I ADORE it and and your videos help so much .
I love your videos so much! This one made me miss your podcasts too! You are such an inspiration Katie, and I’m not even a dancer! Your advice can be applied to life in general. Please don’t ever leave UA-cam or social media! 🙏
Barre is my favorite part ! Thank you Kathryn for all your insights and inspiration. I just got back to ballet at age 50. I don’t look great, but hope to improve and enjoy it so much!!!
This video came at the perfect time! I have a ballet class tomorrow morning and you've made me so excited to do barre better than ever tomorrow! Thank you so much for the excellent video!
I’d love a video on pas de bourée (over and under). I get those so confused especially when you’re starting from coup de pié or from somewhere else. I’d also love a video on double frapé and petit battlements and also developing extension for developés, rond do jambe à terre and en l’air and also increasing your Demi-pointe, getting your foot up to your knee for retiré and any other basic things that I am missing...oh, and I believe they’re called the positions of the body - éffacé, a la quatrième devant, derrière etc.. I am an adult dancer and would love you to restart a back to basics series with those types of things.
I used to hate barre and thought it was boring. Now, I LOVE it. Thinking back I started doing these things and that is when I started to really appreciate the importance of it. Loved the video it was great 💖
Very interesting you talking about Instagram! It is a sad reality today, so much that I built my end of course paper about this theme, called: "The ballet in social medias: A look at the production of the classic dancer's image on the Instagram."
Here is the Abstract: This end-of-course paper aims to take a look at the self-image built by classical dancers on the multimedia social network Instagram, in order to apprehend how this part of the scenic dance is exposed and affirmed in the contemporary social context, knowing that self-image production is a means of visual communication and that such social network is exclusively based on the interaction by this way of communicating. Paradoxical images as we, producers of images are also produced by them. For this research, different bibliographic sources were utilized, besides the observation of some profiles of dancers on Instagram and an anonymous questionnaire relating classic ballet to social networks. Keywords: Classical Ballet, Instagram, Image, Social Networks
Thank u Kathryn Morgan for creating these videos! I live them and have helped me a lot to get back into practicing ballet again after stopping about 25 years ago! ❤
You are the biggest inspiration in my life. Thank you for always being yourself and trying to help the others be the best versions of themselves. Thank you, Kathryn ❤️
Hello!! Lovely video as always!! And as for what you're saying about Instagram and photo editing, it's 100% true. I'm a photographer, cinematographer and i edit absolutely everything. I don't make it unrealistic at all, i mostly enhance light and color, but i am absolutely capable of moving sometimes leg up a few inches in their penche, or adding some arch enhancement to their feet to make them more bendy. It's actually quite easy to do, but you're right. Best thing to do is tune it out and at worst, use it as inspiration and get to the point where you do what you see in those photos without needing to edit them like that.
Never understood why barre was so important. Now I know - to develop each movement of a step. The foundation of most steps in ballet. Thank you for the information. :)
Another wonderfully informative video. I don't know why when I watch your videos I get sucked in. I was hoping you would do another once upon a pointe video soon. Have a great rest of your day
I just started ballet as a 23 year old and I love barre. I know I’m never going to be a ballerina, but I love the focus and concentration it takes in doing everything “properly.” Even when I’m just doing seemingly easy barre work, I’m usually breaking a sweat. My teacher is always on my butt about my quads though. I have super strong quads from weight lifting and it’s hard for me to turn that off for degliches (spelling?).
Hi, Katie! I was wondering if you could do a video on bows. I'm never sure if I'm supposed to say in character for bows or if they're supposed to look more relaxed.
I dance for almost 10 years (age 3-12) then quit what I thought would be forever, but I missed it too much, I'm 14 now and just started going to classes again last month, I got put in with 10 year olds so I'm spending alot of time at home trying to build up strength. I remember the last few years I had done dance i absolutely hated barre, and I started to hate ballet in general, now ballet is what I look forward to, the barre is like home, so to anyone who is starting to loose their passion or is thinking of going back after quitting, it is so incredibly worth it.🖤
I wish more of my ballet teachers would have explained what you have said in this video - bar is not a warm-up! Also it would have been helpful, like you explained, to know WHY we were doing each bar exercise/step (for larger centerwork steps). Thanks Katie!!
I looovvve your videos, I do ballet and have since I was six and your videos have helped me some much they inspire me and motivate me to do my best. Thank you sooooooo much
This is all very interesting, I am way too old for dancing, but I do enjoy going to the theatre, and admire all the work that goes into performing live.
Hard truths. Really needed. And this appreciation for all we have goes beyond ballet. Now that I have left that world and only occasionally go to professional classes, I see jaded dancers and what Katie says is so true. Many people out there only just survive, barely paying their bills and going through life. Dancing is a choice and hard work, yes, but a privilege nonetheless.
My favourite thing to do at the barre is rond de jambe (hope I spelt that correctly). I dont know why, I just do. Btw love your videos, they are super helpful!
You spelled it perfectly! And I agree, rond de jambes are one of my fave exercises in the barre, I feel like I’m truly dancing even though I’m still at the barre ;)
I’m adult so I can’t resent my ballet teachers too much, but when I was only taking ballet I would do almost all my barre without the barre to challenge myself. A contemporary teacher I met later saw me and pointed out I was only balanced cause I was doing crazy things anatomically to stay that way haha. I love barre more after improving my technique and learning out how active and engaging it really is.
I never realized i put my weight back in my heels in barre until yoy said that. It so much easier with the weight in the toes. (Mindblown) thank you so much Katie!
You are so wonderful and fabulous-kind, well-spoken, frank, and generous. We grew up in neighboring cities (Pensacola), and I would sometimes go see Mobile Ballet. It's possible that I'v seen you perform and didn't even know it!
Thank you for this wonderful video it is very helpful when it comes to barre. Good to know that barre is more then a warm up I always had a hint it was about technique. I been tooning people out and focusing on myself and my technique. I been trying dance and put weight on the balls of my feet. Misty Copland said the same thing😂. Thank you for everything you do videos, tips and advice. You are wonderful person you helped over the pass months with technique. Plus I got my pointe shoes and I loved the videos I did they really did help me. Love you with the love of the Lord 😁
Thank you so much for this! Especially the instagram-technique talk. I really needed it, I easily get caught up in what people are posting online and "so-and-so is doing this and so-and-so can do that" and it can make me feel really bad about my dancing and downplay all my progress and hard work so I needed the realitycheck💞
We started my daughter's instagram after she was horribly bullied at her last ballet school. It gave her something positive to work on and also a voice where she had none before. She just wants to do what she loves to do, and since she's been back to class it's amazing to look back and see her progress. It may look "perfect", but please don't compare because she is posting for herself to celebrate those small victories after going through terrible trauma this past year.
My legs have become so much stronger and my feet are way less sore because of starting barre repertoire at my school for strengthening my technique. Barre is my favorite!
Great video, frankness is fun and helpful. The fundamentals are so important. It is the same in ballet as in theatre-- it does not matter how big the part is or how many lines one has, it is about how well the line is delivered. More of the same and it would be great if you could make an advanced beginner, intermediate video, to remind us all of the important fundamentals.
Thank you Kathryn! Amazing video, i love all of the tips. I remember in one of your older videos where you talked about being in the "ball of your feet", it opened a new world up to me. Now I am teaching that to my own students! Love you :)

Great advice. Nureyev once said, "If I skip class for one day, I can tell, if I skip class for two days, the audience can tell."
Great quote, and so true!
We have the same name 😁
Seriously? How cool, that's never happened to me before!
I agree .the masters always know the secrets and if we are wise we listen
One of my teachers was a ballet master and he said that too 🤗
I’m so glad you mentioned the Instagram thing. I have GOTTA get out of the comparison trap. I’m 19 and only started taking class a year ago so sometimes it’s discouraging to see 10 year olds on Instagram dancing like professionals.

Me too. I love barre time.
Another thing my teacher always says is "THE BARRE IS NOT YOUR BOYFRIEND." You have to remember to keep your distance between you and the barre.
Girlfriend in my case, but still true! I used to hang on to the barre so much but since I stopped doing that I have improved a lot especially in terms of balance.
@@lu656 Are you lesbian or a straight boy lol
My teacher said, “Find your boyfriend!” whenever she wanted us to reach for the bar. I thought it was funny. :)
To make us turn our hands in when doing bra ba our teacher said 'I don't want to see your boyfriend's phone number!'
Lol yes! One of my teachers always says, “ the barre is your partner! You don’t want to break your partner’s hand!”
Could you do a video about how Balanchine technique differs from other styles?
I literally almost cried because your dégagés are so pretty
One of my favorites exercises!

I have a video suggestion: about how to strenghten muscles that help with developes and extensions/list of exercises you can do for them
I’ll add it to the list!

Now I’m old and realize how important flexibility and proper technique is :) I just subscribe, hopefully I can use all of ur knowledge to get in better gymnastic shape. Thanks
SHE KEEPS IT REAL!
I'm a 6 months ballet student now, and I'm SO grateful for your channel. You're amazing Kate
So happy to have you back Katie! Your videos always push me to try that little bit harder in class and to get the most out of every opportunity.
I love barre! It's such a great place where I can focus on how my body feels, it's almost like a meditation for me! These tips are great. Thanks so much!
could you make a video about hyperextended knees and/or how to hold your ribs in + exercises
I'm so sad because I never had turnout or a flat tush, just a bubble butt with knees pointed forward!! me so sad!!
As a Disney parade dancer (Youth Dance the Magic Holiday), I completely agree with 2:42, expression and livelyness(if thats a word) your upper body works it what makes it exciting for your audience, the feet are the wow factor in my opinion, equally important.
Yes! Barre is the groundwork for centre and allegre, petit and grand. I love barre!
Hi Miss.
Barre is actually my favorite
“next time on what’s wrong with the world” omg I actually lol’d...hahaha love you Katie. Your vids are the best and motivate me more than you know. Every video reignites my passion for ballet 💘
Haha new series? And thank you!
Hi Katie! Will you do a daily foot care routine please!!!!!
Wow I would be really interested in hearing what your paper said!
It’s sad but true. And I too would love to know what you said in your paper!
@@kathryn_morgan it will be a honor to have you as a reader! But I'm from Brazil, and the all work is in Portuguese!
Here is the Abstract:
This end-of-course paper aims to take a look at the self-image built by classical
dancers on the multimedia social network Instagram, in order to apprehend how this
part of the scenic dance is exposed and affirmed in the contemporary social context,
knowing that self-image production is a means of visual communication and that
such social network is exclusively based on the interaction by this way of
communicating. Paradoxical images as we, producers of images are also produced
by them. For this research, different bibliographic sources were utilized, besides the
observation of some profiles of dancers on Instagram and an anonymous
questionnaire relating classic ballet to social networks.
You look fantastic and have a great sense of humor🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
I have watched you for so long!! Hope you are doing well! ❤️
Thank you Gillian!
Can you please do the difference of ballet techniques like Balanchine, Vaganova, classical
I used to hate barre- but lately I've started enjoying it more and really focusing on my technique instead of the clock 😂. Thanks Katie!! 💞💞
Have a great rest of your day
Thank you! And I will work on it!
I love how you can share these wonderful hacks with the world. It’s very nice of you.
I looooove barre work. I love feeling the improvement from class to class
Everything you're telling is true! The barre work is very Important, it's the base for center and stage work.
I'm doing inter found next year this is the first time I relised that barrel is not a warm up??!! thank you again
This is ALL very true kids!
I love your videos, you are such an inspiration. I dance for 2,5 years and you help me a lot. Thank you so much, Kathryn💝
I love the barre, i always had.
but watching this video is exteremly encouraging
I looovvve your videos, I do ballet and have since I was six and your videos have helped me some much they inspire me and motivate me to do my best. Thank you sooooooo much
This is all very interesting, I am way too old for dancing, but I do enjoy going to the theatre, and admire all the work that goes into performing live.
I'm a teacher and choreographer... I adore you! Thank you! "Photos can be edited!" 👏👏👏👏👏💖💖💖💖💖💖 (thank you)
Hard truths.
Phena Poo same I love them 😍 aso I think that s how you spell it
You spelled it perfectly! And I agree, rond de jambes are one of my fave exercises in the barre, I feel like I’m truly dancing even though I’m still at the barre ;)
@@MissOlivetti yeah thats what its like to me as well!
I know my favourite of your workout videos by heart so now I'm doing my pilates exercises and stretching while watching some of your other videos😁💕
Can’t wait for the Fall 2018 Ballet Box Haul!!!
You are a princess!!! It looked like you were talking to me about balance! Everything I needed to hear! Thank you!!!🌷😘🌸
We started my daughter's instagram after she was horribly bullied at her last ballet school.
Hiya!! Glad you are back!! Loving all the videos. Please could you do an autumn unboxing of your fab new box!
Amazing video Kathryn! Such helpful reminders. I enjoy barre but connecting the dots between barre and center is something I need to work on.
Your oh so correct. Thank you for the love and support.
Your videos are always so genuine, amazing , so informative 🖤 thanks Katy
Thank you Kathryn! Amazing video, i love all of the tips. I remember in one of your older videos where you talked about being in the "ball of your feet", it opened a new world up to me. Now I am teaching that to my own students! Love you :)
