If you haven't figured out how much the entire GoT franchise (books included) owes to pure soap opera, then I don't know what to tell you. OF COURSE it's a high school drama! It's also a game with the highest stakes imaginable. It's also funny as hell that Ser Criston likes to, er, eat out, shall we say?
I never drew parallels between Ser Crispin Simpin Cole and Littlefinger, but now that you say it, it indeed is a spot-on analysis 💯. “If it’s up to him, Rhaenyra will never touch that thing she scorned him for, the iron thrown”. That’s deep, it’s the root cause and his motive for everything.
Cole is light years away from Littlefinger. Cole is a benefactor of circumstance. A skilled fighter at the right place at the right time. He is intellectually average.
Larys is very similar too. I hate them both!

He did pretty darn good for son of a steward! Lord commander of KG, made a king becoming Kingmaker, and also bedded not one, but TWO queens!
He was only ever able to ATTEMPT those things because of Rhaenyra. She gave him his first leg up otherwise he’d be a nobody. His hatred of Rhaenyra carried him far too. He should be kissing her dress hems.
I think what also fuels Cripys fire is that Rhaenyra never pays him any attention or even mentions him when we get to the time jump and I know he’s seething 😭
He hates her because she was frivolous with his feelings and his honor. He would have been cast out or killed if people found out. He killed joffrey because joffrey basically threatened him to keep quiet by using the secret. He tried to kill himself because he lost what he thought was most important, his honor. Alicent gave him a second chance.
What fuels his fire is that she treated him frivolously and now the realm by trying to put a bastard on the throne. He knows that the traditional, rightful heir is Aegon, not Jacerys

I think it's a really good comparison (Cole and Littlefinger), but I wouldn't put Cole down as a chessmaster. He doesn't really scheme. Instead, I see him as a dark interpretation of the White Knight archetype. I also think you're misreading his sense of honor and duty (at least in the early years).
Littlefinger frames his duel for Catelyn's hand as a loss of innocence; before the contest, he saw himself as the plucky, booksmart, romantic hero. He believed that with intelligence, grit, and the power of love, he would defeat the brutish bully Brandon Stark and win the hand of the fair maiden--just like the heroes in the songs and fairytales. He saw his fight as a "David vs Goliath" story. Of course, reality intervened and he was nearly killed. Now, he has become a dark interpretation of that David archetype. He does use his grit and intelligence to bring powerful lords to their knees, but he does so in pursuit of his own power and in a twisted scheme of revenge agaisnt the people who wronged him.
I think Cole is the same, except for the Lancelot archetype intead of the David. In the first half of season 1, he fully believes and lives by the fairytale White Knight. His relationship with Rhaenyra mirrors this kind of story, right down to the messy mixture of knightly devotion and romantic desire that he feels towards his queen. But when reality crashes in and Rhaenyra reveals that she won't (and can't) play along with the fairytale, his sense of honor, his heartbreak, and his jealousy all wrap up together in a nasty tangle of emotions. This is the same kind of loss of innocence that Littlefinger experiences, and it corrupts Cole in the same way it corrupted Petyr. In episode 1.5 he's not scheming, he's spiralling. In the second half of the season, we see him embodying the dark interpretation of his original fairytale archetype. Rather than being motivated by devotion and honor, he's motivated by vengeance and spite. His romantic connection to Alicent mirrors his original attraction to Rhaenyra (and Lancelot's attraction to Guenivere), but now it's filtered through his jealousy and hatred towards Rhaenyra. His "love" towards Alicent is largely because she is the counterpoint to Rhaenyra--in his mind, the virtuous and just lady of the realm fighting against the spider.
It's important to remember that Cole sees himself as the hero. He sees Alicent as a victim and Rhaenyra as the web-weaver. In his mind, he's still the fairytale white knight fighting against the black queen, in the same way that Littlefinger still sees himself as David facing off against the Goliaths of Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, and Tyrell. But Cole, like Lancelot, is not a schemer. Littlefinger is the catspaw dagger: an unassuming, precise weapon that cuts deep and clean. Cole a is a blunt instrument just like the flailed mace he wields; difficult to control, but capable of great destruction in the right hands.
Wonderful breakdown
I absolutely adore Gray, but her summing up Cole as not handling rejection like most men(🙄🙄🙄) was a bit lazy on her part.
Although I’m certain she is drawing parallels from her life and friends regarding men
Hope to see you in more of her comment sections providing such eloquent and detailed insight into these characters and storylines
@@loucypherdamorningstarif you show clips of Sir Crispy to any woman they will tell you that at some point in her life she has Crossed paths with a man just like him. @@badyoutuber1986 criston* lil shorty
Great video, Gray. Glad to see you're back.
There was some serious "cunning" in the premiere last night 😂😂😂😂
I love that you compare Criston to Littlefinger. Criston is much smarter than people give him credit for an example would be when he goaded Harwin Strong into punching him which he knew would piss him off and start a fight which he would start and would lead to Lyonel stepping down as hand of the king and going back to Harrenhal where he and Harwin are killed.
Another parallel which you mentioned was him and Littlefinger being commoners, such as Rhaenyra treating Criston as her boy toy and plaything. I also agree with your analysis of Criston and Alicent's relationship however I think Criston is still in love with Rhaenyra and tries to fill that hole with Alicent no pun intended.
Criston is also one of if not the best fighter at this time, he has wits and is good with a sword. That is a very dangerous combination.
I have also heard a crackpot theory that Criston was planted by the faith of the seven to cause chaos and to kill the dragons ie by pitting them against each other.
Idk if this theory holds any weight but it sure is interesting to think about. Any ways great video would love to see more Criston Cole vids.
That was would be very interesting if it’s true.
He may have goaded Strong, but I don’t he figured it would get Lyonel removed or Harwin sent from KL.
I believe he thought it would expose the secret to the king, but it didn’t because Viserys would never accept that truth from anyone but Rhaenyra
I think Christin true bond to Alicent is mutual hatred for Rheanera. And once that is gone, nothing is left. And now that Alicent is experiencing passion for tbe first time ever, she will come to understand Rheanera and her mistakes. She was always just jealous, anxious and inexperienced. She will ask Christin to fall back, and he won't. Because his obsession with Rheanera is his entire identity. He is like a heat seeking missile. Alicent will probably ask him the same thing he asked Rheanera. "Give this all up, for our love." And he will respond exactly the way Rheanera did.
Great observation!!! Never thought about it that way!!!
Not quite considering they have other similarities.

Excellent video! What a great comparison between Crispin and Littlefinger.
This chick does not understand the importance of chastity and duty. Sir Criston sacrificed his duty and chastity because those were the only things that kept him from what he had become. Chaste is better than soiled, and chastity was what made Criston unique and special, now that is gone, he has nothing to live for.
Dude, just keep doing it… ? Keep breaking every vow u swore?
@@GrayArea You can only break chastity once, it's something that can't be restored unfortunately. When he sleeps with Alicent his not breaking his oath or chastity, it was broken first time he slept with Rheanyra. You can only break an oath once. It must be my imagination, but I thought Cole left a wife or a betrothed behind somewhere before coming to King's Landing.
They did him dirty in the show, to make Rhaenyra look good.
Are you kidding me?? The man is unhinged and dangerous! Y’all are blaming a teenage girl for “using” a very willing man. He’s mad because she rejected him. If he was her victim, do you think he’d want to run away and marry Rhaenyra after one night in her dragon saddle? He doesn’t care about his Vows.
If you watch Ryan Condal’s interview about Sir Criston Cole and Alicent. He said that it’s a “new” relationship and that Alicent and Criston finish getting down and start talking about the weather.
@@persephone342 That’s the show’s version, in the book he is a man of honour, all women desired him but he stayed true to his oath, he was also relentlessly pursued by Rhaenyra, ok she was young but she was also the princess and we know how young the characters in GRRMs universe are. Daenerys for instance was 13 when Drogo raped her, we didn’t hate him though since she seemed older in the show. Anyway, read the book, the show turned Cole into a spiteful incel. 🤦🏻♀️ He will however become a very dangerous man and commit atrocities like the rest of them. Women here have bought into the show’s narrative, men are stupid, jealous, vindictive creatures and women are cool badass queens, that’s modern day Hollywood for you. After watching S2E1 and how they ruined Blood&Cheese I definitely prefer the book even without POV characters. As GRRM recently said, show runners always think they own a story and can do better than the source material which is never the case. umm i have to disagree on this take, I do believe his broken oath affected him mixed with the woman he fell for doesn´t reciprocate. I believe he wanted to escape with Raenhyra cause It would justify his broken Oath and give it a purpose. His Oath was his greater achievement in live and he broke it, he couldn´t accept it and let things settle because of remorse and shame. And he kills the noble at the wedding cause he noticed they knew....that imo was too much for his pride, the fact that some other knew about it..more that the love he could have for Rhaenyra. imo he didn´t love her that much, he loves himself and he is indeed a villain in the story who runs to betray the one that makes him feel ashemed

Gray’s take on Ser Cristen shows how much the average modern woman doesn’t understand about social class men and masculinity.

I really don't understand how Crispin Cole is so repulsive when there is people like Aegon and Daemon around.
Ser Christon Muff Diver is a more appropriate moniker. The first time we see you in Season 2 and what are you doing?

The only book/show change that has bothered me has been Rhaenys's hair, but if Criston comeuppance isn't super faithful to the book it will ruin the whole show for me. The scene is just too perfect and one of the coolest most underrated that GRRM wrote. I NEED Garibald, Pate, Roderick and Rob. I'm lowkey hoping Roderick and Rob are kinda portrayed like Gimli and Legolas
So, were he and Alicent getting busy while Aemond lost his eye too? I wonder if it was going on that long
The fact that he is so loathed within the community (including myself) and not enough people within the show hating him as much as we do tells me he is going to be around for a very long time and most wont even know what damaged he caused until its too late! Can't stand that man!! You made very good parrallels between him and Lord Baelish (who my husband calls Twinkle Toes for some reason lol!!
I do believe he loved Rheanyra and that’s why all these years later he still not over it . When rejected love can turn to hate on a heart beat. That and his huge ego.
They had Cristen on his knees doing the madness! STAND UP!!!!
"Heartbroken, wounðed & a little bit psycho"..
Yep, that about sums him up.
A steward in this context is a personal servant/apprentice. Ser Cristen got to where he is by being a highly competent soldier at a relatively young age. He is guilty of simping for Rhaenyra because he didn’t have any real experience with women, let alone a princess. He also may have an inferiority complex because he’s a Dornish commoner existing amongst the nobility of Westeros. It’s like he’s from the projects and now he works in Martha’s Vineyard. I think your assessment of Ser Cristen shows how most women see the “average guy”.
I always said Cristian Cole was not the honorable person he claimed to be because, if he was, he never would have put himself into the situation with Rhaenyra. And after all that, he put himself into the same situation with Alicent. Sorry Cristian, your actions speak so loud I can't hear what you're saying.
Men don't mind rejection it is the manner of rejection. Some ladies don't mind disgracing/embarrassing/ dragging a man in public just to take pleasure in rejecting that man. As for this story Ser Criston Cole is just a coward rehneryra rejection wasn't to embarass him. He should have been more realistic to what he is asking her to do. So I but the blame on Cole her because he is the older mature one who also knows that what he did could get him killed.
He’s always Crispin over here!!!!

How did a steward's son rise so high you ask? In my opinion, in the books, he had help. He was brought in as a mole, by Otto, to charm his way into the Princess' pants and soil her reputation in the eyes of the realm. All as a part of the Hightowers and Maesters' scheme to undermine House Targaryen. But he failed. And at that point after nearly a decade of work, he got pissed at his failure and all-out turned on Rhaenyra (although admittedly he was never "hers"). I know you compare him to Littlefinger here and I don't dispute those similarities; but another comes to mind- Daario. I could easily see Daario turning on Daenerys at some point just like Criston turned on Rhaenyra. Also, on an unrelated note, Varys will always be a villain to me for undermining Rhaegar and convincing Aerys to go to Harrenhal. Great video.
That’s what always bugged me
If he was for the realm, why did he do that?
Is he really a blackfyre or working for/with a blackfyre?
Not men can't handle rejection from women. People can't handle rejection. Reject a woman and let her see you with another woman 😂 The myth is its only men, we all in this together
It's just that women like to see what they want to see so that it can benefit there naritive everyone knows they are the ones who burn houses down just because they got dumped the majority of men just have a beer with there friends or sit depressed in there apartment for a few days but eventually get over it
@@badyoutuber1986 🤫 Don’t speak the truth too loud. They don’t like that. They might try to get you cancelled. 🥸🤣
Where did that clip come from when Little Finger was a kid? Was that in GOT?
Great breakdown
"Westerosi plan B" sent me into orbit!😭😭 but I agree 100% on this analysis of Crispy...he's the equivalent of a vindictive, bitter baby mom!😒
Hell hath no fury like a boy rejected
Does anyone think that Daerion, Alicent son my turned out to be Sir Crispín’s son. Maybe that is why Alicent send him away to Old town with the Hightowers to keep him out of sight . Alicent didn’t want Otto to go to Old town and changed his mind to go to High Garden. I think she knows Otto would figure it out and keeps him from going there.
The green council scene is a contest if which green I hate the most 🤣
It will always be Otto for me.
Glad everyone is scheming behind his back and he sees his grip on power slipping away
Lol I have no idea why, but I thought you were gonna say “Griffin” instead of “Baelish” after Peter 😄
He’s still in love with her. He wouldn’t be talking as bad about her if he wasn’t still in love with her. You know, there’s a fine line between love and hate. He doesn’t love Alicent.
Raynera had that good good he ain't got over being mad and butt hurt over her turning down his proposal almost 20 years ago.
I do wonder if she does break it off with him, what's gonna happen? He doesn't handle rejection well.
I am getting so eager for his death but because the actor is considered good looking, we probably will have to endure his presence for awhile
Great video as always! Team Black ❤
They can't handle it. It's a tale as old as time.
Girl, if you didn't borrow this quote from some book you should start writing your own.
Great sentence.
And voice. ;)
Team green ✅ for the win, and Chrissy ain’t a villain nor Alicent tragic characters definitely relatable but villains Nawh 💯
I'm Green as well but you must admit the writers aren't doing the green's any favours
Big facts.
Read a comment that said maleficent and crispy where smashing in rhaneras room😮while Helena was being attacked
Criston cole appetite is impressive
I 100% agree... I think Cristian and Alicent are using each other.. He cares for Alicent but he is still in LOVE with Rhaenerya... I will bet ANYTHING when he finally dies.. his last words or thoughts will be of Rhanerya
Great insights😀🍷🍷
