The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (formerly University of Texas Pan-American) Mariachi program was founded in 1989 by Dr. Dahlia Guerra, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at UTRGV, and is directed by Mr. Francisco Loera, who is on the faculty at the Department of Modern Languages and Literature and the Department of Music and Dance at UTRGV. The UTRGV Mariachi was founded to promote Mexican Folk music and the culture of the Hispanic people for the benefit of the students and community of South Texas.
Today, 30 years after the program's founding, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's mariachi program consists of three mariachi ensembles: the award-winning Mariachi Aztlan, Mariachi Azalea ( founded in 2018, all-female group), and Mariachi Juvenil Aztlan (consisting of mostly incoming students and newer members).
