Lets be clear - Franklin lost his belt to the greatest mixed martial artist of that era...the era that ended up spanning 10 years! Rich is a legend no matter what.
In fairness, calling Silva the greatest mma fighter of his era is anything but clear. I think most would have a hard time not including him in the top 5 of the era, but a much harder time calling him number one.

Rich Franklin is to the mma community, what Keanu Reeves is to Hollywood actors. A true humble man that remembers where they came from and respects everyone.
When I first started watching UFC Rich Franklin was the middleweight champion and he became my favourite fighter not only because he was a great fighter but it was clear that when he was interviewed you knew he was a great person , he was always respectful towards his opponent and was the perfect ambassador for his chosen sport and rightfully a member of the UFC hall of fame .
That was a good time to first get into the UFC. Roster was full of legends, TUF was in its way (or perhaps had just started, depending on the timing), Pride was still a thing...
Rich was always entertaining to watch and come across as such a nice bloke and still remember him winning the UFC Middleweight Champion in the golden age of the sport
Met at a local mma show while he was ufc champion. Took a pic with my wife and my niece and had a solid ten minutes he hung out with us. Super nice good guy.
Ace was the UFC champion, One vice president, UFC HOF, graduated with a master degree, maths teacher, nice guy, smart, respectful, well-spoken, good looking, mma ambassador and he is one the best thing happened in mma history of a man and fighter represents the sport. We love him!
Rich and I still train in the same gym together weekly. He is also trained by Jorge Gurgel here in Ohio, which my son has been training under JG FOR 10yrs. It’s crazy being in the gym with him because he still looks young and trains like a beast very nice guy.
I'm glad to see so many comments pushing back against the stupid clickbait thumbnail. There is nothing sad about Rich's life before, during, or after the UFC. His career is in the top 1% of MMA career outcomes.
I still cherish my Rich ACE Franklin shirt, it's my favorite, he has been one of my favorites from the moment I saw him fight, as a fellow Cincinnati resident
Man, this was a blast from the past. Rich Franklin is an excellent example of how to live life positively. He has transitioned at the right timing each and every step of the way. Rich knew it was time to step away from Fighting for a living and had started businesses prior to retiring from UFC. Rich currently is VP at ONE apparently, just learned that here, again a step up in his career/life he lives. My personal feel on the subject is, Rich Franklin is one of the last pure MMA fighters in the US, and treated it as a job and none of the attitude/fluff bs. I get it, Rampage Jackson ripping a door off its hinges, after he punched thru it, is entertaining.
I went to the high school he taught at and saw him break up a fight between two kids coming back from lunch one day. The kids started fighting right outside his room and he came out and literally picked both kids up by the back of their shirts! they stopped fighting immediately it was hilarious!

Rich Franklin has never been anything other than a warrior, both in and out of the octagon. They were spelling fighters' names wrong ,and making poor quality clothing for a good while which is why I stopped wearing their stuff , well to be completely honest it was also because of the way the ufc fighters were being treated. Nick and Nate Diaz wouldn't hold back on the way that Dana White and sponsors were screwing over the fighters, and this caused gyms around the world to evaluate the situation. My partners and I at the time dropped everything to do with Reebok. Rich Franklin's name has never been anything but Royalty in the mma community. One of my favorite fighters of all time! I remember watching all of his fights and seeing him lose to Anderson was tough! His KO of Quarry was one of the best one punch KO's in UFC history! He retired on my B-day, September 28th. Legend of the sport 👊
