  • Michael, known in the Pennsylvania harness race world as Mr. Cornbread, was a registered Standardbred we intercepted from auction through our Buy-Out Program in March. Our hearts broke as he stepped off the trailer, using three of his legs rather than all four. He had endured the pain of a broken fetlock for an unknown amount of months and had been forced through an auction before coming to us in his condition. He also had indication of active founder in his right foot, due to him bearing most of his weight on that one side. Sadly, there was nothing we could do to fix the damage to his leg. His joint was fused together, making him unable to walk properly or without pain. So, Michael received the Last Act of Kindness to relieve his pain and suffering. This is the reality of rescue work and why we think it is important for you to see both sides to our rescue work.

Michael is now running in the fields of Valhalla. No more pain, no more abuse, he can just be Michael. To his former owners, you should have done the right thing for this beautiful boy. But you chose to let his suffering go on, what for a little money ??? You should be charged in court by the law for animal abuse and neglect. You will be judged by the Lord in due time. Thank you Horse Plus Humane Society for doing the right thing.

I can't imagine ANYONE allowing this to go on so long . Has anyone any idea how long he had been this way ? It looks like a LONG time by the length of his hoof. He was in good condition so the owners probably thought they could recoup more of their money from the kill buyers. NO thought of the pain and suffering and horrendous end that he would have to endure..... ... I can't imagine a punishment to fit such a crime .....

@@jillp37616:38 Tawnee talked about x-rays after they humanely euthanized Michael. They took those X-rays Dr Lydia evaluated those X-rays and 6 to 9 months that Michael has been injured, whether it was track injury or pasture injury they can't tell. JMHO it should have been take care immediately rather then to allow such great suffering and neglect.

To think that that poor young horse has been suffering from that horrific injury for 6-9 months without any treatment or care while he got shipped around through the slaughter pipeline and the auctions being ‘passed’ by ‘vets’ at these disgusting places all because the owner was too cheap and callous and heartless to call a vet and have him euthanised to end his agony. The mongrel preferred to try to get some easy money for him by sending him to slaughter without a second thought!!! I have no words to describe how I feel about this person and all the other owners who continue to do the exact same thing. The slaughter pipeline has to be shut down permanently!!!!!!!😪🙏RIP Michael. 😪😪😪❤️❤️❤️🙌🏻🙏❤️❤️❤️

As hard as it is to watch, I made the decision that I cannot look away. Michael/Mr Cornbread deserves to be remembered and recognized.
I watched the race, worried that I would see the moment he injured himself. I saw several different times that it could have happened, given that he doesn't have a racing history after this one time. I hope that Michael didn't live in pain for nearly 3 years before coming to HPHS and being given the last act of kindness.

In Ohio we have a different form of abuse. It is nursing mares for Thoroughbreds. The ordinary mare (nursing mare) is bred the same time as the Thoroughbred. They both give birth around the same time, but the foal from the nursing mare is taken off its mother and the Thoroughbred foal put on her. The Thoroughbred is then rebred so that she will foal again. The foal from the other mare is left to starve. There are organizations who try to save these babies.

Thank you for rescuing Michael from the slaughter pipeline and giving him the dignified end he needed. I will forever stand by you and with you in the fight to stop this cruel trade. Horses are majestic empathic beings who deserve respect and pain free lives. They are not there for our dominion, they are our partners and we’re blessed if a horse loves us. All we need do in return, is love and respect them back and that means doing the right thing by them, not throwing them away for a few extra dollars in our pockets.

This one really got to me. I have a fused ankle. It was shattered in an accident when I was young and 30 years later it finally collapsed. The difference is that my ankle was deliberately fixed into place with surgery and encouraged to fuse-even so IT TOOK 3 MONTHS of bed rest for my bones to fuse together. Michael was left like this for A VERY LONG TIME!!!!!
I truly hope you were able to find the owners and that charges were filed in this case.

My frustration is more that when horses get hurt, their owners just toss them aside. If said animal gets hurt trying to please you, You have to do right by them. Even if you just have them put to sleep because you don't want to deal, that's far kinder then tossing them in the pipeline of torture to Mexico. It's not just racing that fails at this either unfortunately.

My first job was working with Standardbreds in the racing industry. While they are actively racing they look thin. With a good stable, while they are racing and even during conditioning and training, they will eat anywhere from double to four times the amount of the average horse. That is to keep them able to sustain muscle and weight. Michael/Mr. Cornbread was still looking good for his body. For 13 races he would be 2-3 year old during those races, one year if he was raced back to back. Since he didn't do well racing, he'd be retrained for riding as well as cart work. In Pennsylvania, horses like him are usually sold to Amish for carting or riding. In Florida he might have lucked out to be bought as a riding horse (trail, show if he did well under English saddle, or companion horse). Broken fetlock like that, I would lean towards an Amish owner, as they tend to sell their injured horses to the kill auctions, no matter the condition, instead of trying to fix the injury.
This is just my opinion for that last bit. Most injured Standards are usually from bad racing stables, but the condition wouldn't have been as good as Michael showed and he'd still be listed under his racing name. I have seen through other rescues, injured Standardbreds in the auctions they are rescued from, tend to be from Amish owners. Amish horses will most times have biblical names, if they are named by last owner. He might not have been in bad condition, over worked or treated like an object, because his last owner cared enough to keep him fed and cared for. Long hooves like he had on his other feet also had me leaning towards last owner was Amish.

    • @lisacarson6223
      @lisacarson6223 4 місяці тому +1

Agreed. The shape of his feet tell me he had road shoes. My Standie's feet were like that when I got him. The Amish will unload a horse that can't work when the injury is severe rather than have a vet try to fix it.

I appreciate everything you do for these horses, truly I do. I know this is to help you in fund raising but it gets to a point where enough is enough. Repeatedly showing the same video of a horse that was heart wrenching the first time we saw it just makes me question you and your motives. You have shown this footage in 3 or 4 videos now and it tears me apart every time I see this horse. Some of these videos are incredibly painful to watch and I know you do it for awareness..... but showing a horse over and over again that we all know has gone to heaven, is kind of cruel IMO.

You responding this way is exactly why they do this. Plus this video included details about his life that wasn't in other videos.

I can’t watch the video. We have to contact our representatives to pass the necessary legislation to stop the cruelty!!

I can't see a racing stable holding onto Michael IF he was injured on the track. His lack of racing from one point to when you saved him was because he was OFF the track and sold privately or thru an auction because of his lack of "potential". My guess this gelding was bought at auction and sold to the Amish for a buggy horse.

From what I was looking at, he stopped racing when he was 3 and he was now 7. So he was probably an Amish buggy horse for 3-4 years so injured during that time

Please press the like button each time you watch a video. It is so important to raising funds for Horse Plus. Also let the video run all the way through so that the adds can play. This will helps them with their rescue funds. These guys are so worth your support.
