Tiny House Life: No Such Thing as Perfect!

  • Hey guys,
The other day I watched a great video by Stace of the UA-cam channel Casa Duro that really got me thinking.
In it she talks about how so much of the content around tiny houses is tied to a romantic notion of being off grid, homesteading, living on a piece of land far away from regular society. And, how many of the people who are interested in or living tiny aren’t living that way and don’t have any interest in that.
These idealized images can make us feel like we’re not doing tiny living ‘right’ which is really sad. The fact is that we come to this lifestyle for many different reasons. Some by necessity and some by choice.
When I talk about living intentionally, I mean intentionally for YOU. Which will be different that for ME. So, while living an intentional, tiny house life isn’t always easy, or glamours (spoiler alert, it’s’ not), it is perfect for me at this time of my life. It allows me to be 85% happy in life like I talked about in a previous vide. And, you know what? That’s pretty damn good!
Watch Stace’s video, and check out her channel here: • Expectations vs REALIT... , she’s pretty awesome ☺️.

Beautiful sharing; thanks! My parents were from large families who worked very hard as well. They saved & paid for all the land they owned so us kids could have a better life. My dad had left home at 14 years because his family was barely surviving in the dust bowl of Saskatchewan. His parents ere immigrants from Germany in the early 1900’s. They taught us responsibility, love & the golden rule of doing unto others, as you would have them do unto you. Blessings to all 🤗💜🇨🇦

Great video. So much here to think about. I love the care you take with your words. Thank you for sharing your family story. It reminds me of parts of mine. My dad worked so hard. Worried. Did so much so we would have more than he did. His retirement dream was a little boat and fishing and time with my mom. He enjoyed his retirement for less than a year. I, too, learned you can't wait to live your life. Yes, plan. Yes, save. But don't wait to live. Live on purpose. Live with intention. Thank you so much for sharing. Listening to you honor your dad and your family story gave me the gift to take a moment to honor mine.

Thank you for your very special and useful communication. Lessons learned, with heart. I have recently come to realise how my 'search' for the piece of land and off grid tiny home living have been getting in the way of living in the now, and enjoying my life day by day, hour by hour. Moving towards my tiny home vision, needn't prevent present enjoyment and happiness. So your words have fallen on very receptive ground here. Thank you Adelina

I agree that it’s mostly a choice to live tiny. I love my 200 square foot home. I wanted to live in a home that was comfortable and paid off. And when the time comes, my girls won’t be burdened with my stuff. Love your videos, looking forward to seeing your new spot.

This latest video compelled me to post. No, you are not 1 of those that you are talking about. You are a refreshing, informative, educational, encouraging oasis. Your openness, your frankness about everyday imperfections (aka real life) has been so helpful to me coming to grips with my life situation & making it better just where I am, as I am, with what I have. Sure, I have hopes n plans, but I don't have to drive towards anybody else's promotion of their ideas of perfection.
It is funny that you were hitting a lot of my above thoughts as I was typing this out.

I couldn't agree more with your message today,,my dad never got to retire either,,he got diagnosed with cancer at 62 years old and died 4 months later . He never got to spend his retirement fishing or enjoying his days. He was a truck driver and spent his entire adult life working to to retire.

It's nice to have variety. I'm sure the idea of you trying to do something nice for your mom. Was very comforting to her. I'm not sure if you celebrate mother's day up there. But I hope your kids tell you how lucky they to have you.❤

Life is definitely a roller coaster. My father had his first stroke when he was 42. He got back to work, but had a number of subsequent strokes which eventually by the time I was 18, he needed 24/7 care. Mum gave up working and became his carer, with my younger brother and myself helping her. My older sister was married and lived away. Unfortunately, mum then had a heart attack, and dad went into hospital for a short stay whilst mum was recovering, but sadly he had another stroke and passed away.....he was 53. My sister died young from cancer, I've had 2 primary cancers and my brother has also had cancer. Both my brother & myself have lived for today for years. My daughter who is now 40, was told 10 years ago that she's in the high risk group for developing cancer, so I told her to live life to the full whilst she can, because as you say, we don't know what is round the corner. Her living life is to travel because that's what she and her family love to do. Obviously, I'm hoping that she doesn't ever develop cancer. I have known people who have retired, then sadly developed dementia. There is more to life than bed and work.

Oh, Adelina!😢Great vid; I’m sobbing hearing about your Dad’s hard work, his saving money for the future, sending it back to family as well, and never getting a chance to live out his dream.
I do believe in parallel lives; I also like to think of our loved ones who’ve transitioned living their dreams in another dimension. I see him in a well-maintained & warm motor home pulling a boat & fishing along the way.
I’ve subbed to Stacy’s channel. There are many different definitions of what it means to live off grid, & too many think their definition is the supreme & only one. SMH.
Totally agree w/you: save for the future, but live, hopefully, your best life now and/or work towards it.
Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
A bumper sticker I taped to a kitchen cabinet for years in a long ago apartment said, “Think big thoughts but savor small things.” I just loved that bumper sticker. It was a constant affirmation for me during the years I had it before it fell apart over time. Still is an affirmation for me.
TFS the story of your Dad & also your Mom. What an amazing job you did taking care & loving them through so much. You’re such a wonderful human being, Adelina.
I hold you close in my heart & always think of you, wishing you & your loved ones all the best.

the lifestyle we have, then that is all we need!
Why should we aspire to what others think is
ideal when our own dream is different than
what they want ?!! Being happy comes from
within and not from an existence designated
by anyone else! You have achieved a remark-

    Hello Adelina,
First, thank you for sharing that very personal and special story about your mom and dad. This is only the second time that I ever commented on a video and the first time was a few months ago to another one of your vids. Watching this today of all days felt very synchronistic. Referring to walking the fine line between living today and not waiting until "when I retire, when the kids are out of school, when etc" and at the same time putting strategies in place to accomplish your visions and intentions to use your resources, both internal and external to manifest what you wish.Yesterday, I bought tickets for a trip this summer. A trip I've wanted to take for years. I also want to buy a tiny house and I am saving and in the process of gathering information on how to make that happen. I debated with myself a couple of months but when I made the purchase I felt really good. The conclusion I have come to is that I have to take care of me today because tomorrow isn't guaranteed to any of us. However, you can never lose sight that tomorrow and the day after and the day after that may indeed come and you want to be prepared and in the best position to live your best life when they do. As for people having a fixed idea of what living tiny "should" look like, there is the error. I've always thought part of the whole point of going tiny is to break free from the mental box of "shoulds". We, the people who like and want to live tiny can't forget that the images of someone else's life in a tiny home isn't a blue print but at most an inspiration. If we're rigid about our idea of tiny living how can we expect our officials to open their minds and be flexible and start to accept and allow people to live how they want to live(wiithin reason)? Sorry for the length. Thank you for sharing the way you do.

The way you took care to your Dad....and your Mom....oh just touched my heart! The loving way you prepared a welcome home every night, even as a young girl, so that when she came home to a quiet sleeping household, she would know and feel she was loved and honored. Just an absolutely beautiful sweet thing for you to do as a young girl. And you were still young and in school.....wow. You are an amazing and inspiring person.

I wouldn't say you're saying any one way to live tiny, is the best way. I think you give a very thoughtful example of "your" way to live a simpler, more sustainable life. There's thousands of videos now of "sustaiable tiny living" and just like picking the toppings from a salad bar, the video's should be used as a "guide" for the aspects of tiny living one may want to apply to their own experience. I will say, I truly believe if there were more tiny home "communities", many more people would probably choose tiny. Because I feel people do embrace community and may feel that they'd be giving that up going tiny. Have you seen any videos from "Incredible Tiny Homes"? They're in Tennessee. They are doing some wonderful things with developing tiny home communities.
As always, enjoyed your video. Can't wait to see the new parking spot in full detail.

Adelina, what a wonderful, beautiful message. I am struggling a bit to declutter my home, a task I started about a year before my older sister died.
I then went into a kind of tailspin, followed by the isolation and restrictions of COVID. Somehow my stuff multiplied during those years! I have more yarn than I will ever be able to knit/crochet, more stationery supplies than I will be able to use, and more needlework patterns than I will ever be able to stitch!
Fortunately, I should be able to find a home for my excess collections of craft supplies, etc.; we have an artist's thrift shop in town that will accept most, if not all, that I decide to pass along. And I should be able to honour the promise I made my niece not to leave her with another place that will be a burden to clear out, with a bonus of actually having the space to comfortably do the things I enjoy in the meantime!

As I've mentioned in the past I do have a house that is rented and that I now share with my daughter and grandchildren. However it really doesn't feel like my home anymore so me having my caravan is my absolute favourite place to be at this point in time. I'm fortunate that I don't need to work as my ex husband provides for me. However I am returning back to full time teaching so that I can buy land and have s cabin/cottage put on it. I spen a lot of time at my caravan but because I do a lot of crafting it's really not big enough, plus the site that it's on doesn't have any security and my caravan got broken into with lots of my things getting stolen. Otherwise I'd live on the site. 💕

Love this video, Adelina! Such wisdom you shared. ♥ For myself, I have wanted a tiny house for several years and have watched many, many videos about them. Yours has been the most informative in helping me to realize that it's not so much a tiny house on wheels that I want, but a small space to live. I am 72 years old and have no desire to do all the research you have done, deal with building companies, etc. I just want a smaller space to live (300-400 sq. ft.) The reason I wanted a tiny house is because they are usually so well-designed for maximizing storage, much more so than small apartments in buildings. I love how every inch in a tiny house is designed with storage in mind. I currently live in an apartment that is about 750 sq. ft. and it's just too big for me. But, with the way the rental market has skyrocketed, an apt. that is half the size is at least twice as much in rent. So, I will do my best to continue appreciating my home, while focusing on finding a way to downsize without upsizing my rent! 😊
Thank you so much for sharing your views and thoughts. I hope the prep for your move is going well. ♥♥♥

Adelina, I love this video so much! I'm honored to have been the catalyst to inspire you to talk about this subject. Thank you for sharing your experience with your father and how that has impacted your perspective on life and pursuing your dreams. My mother is living with Parkinson's which is progressively getting worse. It is a hard thing to see the changes, but she has been living her best life since I "fled the nest" and her perspective changed on what her life could be now that motherhood (and her entire identity really) took on a different form. She lives everyday to the fullest and pursues her passions, traveling and volunteering, and it is beautiful to see that.

You shared this so well, Adelina. I’ve always enjoyed your videos and I like how you have encouraged us, me specifically, to live an intentional life. You’ve never made me feel “less than”. I live in a small condo that I absolutely love. I recently paid off my mortgage which I worked hard to do so. The definition of FREEDOM to me is being able to live intentionally within my means. Thank you for being beautiful you!❤

I had similar experience with my parents but differently. I was the one to take Dad to Dr. appointments, drive Mom to and from the hospital.
Dad had very serious heart disease but did the same as yours with putting the dream off. His last job was at the school, so he had summers off, so they did travel in their motor home, pulling his boat or motorcycle behind.
But through the years, they didn't spend money on anything that was not on their home, food, occasional haircuts, gas. I have no idea how much they saved. Money was not talked about in our house.
Somehow, he knew he was going to die soon because he made me promise I would take care of Mom when the time came. Mom and I did not get along at that time due to her undiagnosed personality disorder and verbal abuse.
But I promised him. They abruptly decided they were selling their home, which was a duplex (with me paying half the mortgage, utilities) and buying land where i could raise my miniature horses.
I told them I had no problem, my daughter and I moving, but I already had a perfect place for my minies.
But they put the house up for sale, bought land, and a modular home and insisted I move with them.
There was an intersection from the.first.day we passed it and every time told us to be extra careful because it was going to be a bad intersection.
On Christmas Eve morning, he and Mom were taking food to my uncle, stopped to collect the mail in town, and in that intersection, they were broadside. It was 3 miles from home. A two lane road with very few cars on it.
The impact killed Dad instantly and nearly Mom as well.
I took care of Mom as a sole caregiver plus working a full-time and part-time job to keep us afloat for the next 12 ish years. Mom was finally as having a personality disorder, depression and alzheimers the latter taking her.
So I fully support notputting hopes and dreams. Live for today, but plan like crazy and take time to do things on your bucket list no matter how silly or costly, do them.
Before Mom passed, my doctor's and social security doctors deemed me fully, permanently disabled. I can not do things off my bucket list.
But now I'm so grateful for a roof over my head, running water, leaves on trees, blooms on plants, my service dog, a bed...... I'm disabled but I have found a renewed pleasure. Many are taken for granted.
I've lived my life as I needed to and do not regret it..
Live the life you have, be grateful, there's always people worse off than you.

Misnomer: live today but save for the future. Well, in order to save (and enjoy, and hopefully live long enough) you have to work your tail off. With inflation in the states and it steadily increasing, so many are just trying to survive and hopefully sock away a little for the future. It’s a double edged sword. Work more so you can have more at retirement or be able to do it comfortably but all the while missing the here and now. So do you miss seeing the forest for the trees? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Food for thought and definitely not disputing what you said.

Yes, I want to live intentionally for me, in a tiny paid off home at retirement.
It may not be close to my daughters in VA because of restrictions of zoning for Tiny Homes. They (my daughters)think I should live close to one of them as I get older. But in reality it’s not affordable for me in their areas.

So so sad that dad wasn’t able to enjoy a retirement after such a hard life. It really gives us insight into what drives you too.

You always come across as being very open and honest--good and bad. I think the difference between the choice of our parents to change their lives for the benefit of their children was somewhat what different than ours choosing to change in order to have a simpler life and so we are not just going through the motions to survive on that treadmill but actually engaged in our steering our future….even if it means sacrificing in order to live it more fully..on our own terms… so sacrificing or know they gave us the opportunity to choose…..Matthew Allen from VanLifePlus is a Prime example of that intentional evolution…even if it was expedited by unexpected life events. My mom passed in her sleep when I was 17…out of the clear blue sky… not sick at all…blood clot in her heart…Shocked by it all… I learned very young how precious each person was in one’s life and each day a chance to make a difference. I just did a phone call with my bank about a more structured budget but I'm curious--if you're willing to share--if you budget a certain percentage to save (retirement/regular savings/other goals) or if that number fluctuates.

I save a percentage of my pay to get the maximum match from my company. Otherwise my focus is paying off my house build loan. Once that's done then I'll put all the cash towards retirement savings. I already have retirement accounts bTW.

I have several issues with the video premise as well as with your comment ... and I wish we could all sit together and discuss as it is challenging to express my thoughts without seeming unkind. I do not mean to be unkind at all!! BUT, my personal perspective is that we are each responsible for our own decisions and also for developing our personal strengths. The stuff you talked about at the start, that’s so present in all movements/groups. The guitar community especially. You’re not a real [fill in the blank] if you don’t have this model guitar, this year amp, this reverb tank, this cable, these picks, etc. It’s all so tiresome and shallow. I have a very low opinion of “gatekeepers”, the unsolicited variety, in any group/pursuit, who I often see as posers and surface-only, or into/obsessing on the physical trappings of a movement/hobby. That’s why the acronym STFU was invented, for those types. No patience for that crowd, putting so much stock in them”rules” and “have to” actions/behavior. 🎶Wasn’t born to folloooowww…🎶 😊

Thank you for your story. But the reality is that you do not live in a tiny house.
You live in a tiny trailer and all that goes with that. Rarely allowed on private land,
unless miles from civilization, and therefore mostly confined to trailer parks.
as you just found out. There is nothing wrong with this. Minimalizing is a good
thing and you'll more than likely have the most beautiful trailer in the park.
I first became aware of tiny houses wandering in London mews, some 70 years
ago, where coach houses on laneways were converted into tiny houses.
This is something that is getting very slowly approved in Canada where laneways
exist . When I came to Canada -from the Netherlands- I dreamed of houseboat
living to find out what you have found out. It is an expensive lifestyle that does
not allow much freedom of movement. Sorry, but we can't all agree : That would
    be boring.
