- Wright Brothers Lecture Series: "Rosie" Rosenthal joined the military fresh out of law school and went on to fly 53 combat missions as a B-17 pilot in World War II as a member of the 100th Bomb Group, the "Bloody Hundredth". He was shot down twice but continued on to fly each time. After the end of the war in Europe, he went back to the states to train to fly the B-29 and fight in the Pacific, but the war ended before he finish training. After the war, he returned to Europe as a lawyer, prosecuting the likes of Hermann Göring at the Nurenberg Trials.
Loved "Masters of the Air". So thankful for Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks for having the passion (and talent and resources) to bring this incredible story to people's attention so they can get to know some real stories of real war heroes.
I was an AF officer in the audience when Rosie gave this presentation. His story, his humility moved me. A genuine American hero. Honored to know that I was part of his Air Force.
It was a great privilege for me to get to know Rosie Rosenthal when we honored him in the Jewish-American Hall of Fame in 2005.
I recently finished reading Masters of The Air & it was EXCELLENT. I thought this was interesting as Colonel Rosenthal joined the service on 12/8/41. My father in law joined the Navy on 12/8/41 he was 16. By early 1942 he was a torpedo man in the destroyer escort fleet doing convoy duty in the North Atlantic. He made 37 trips through the canal seeing Naval combat in both the Atlantic & Pacific theaters. My brothers father in law was a Marine and was on Tarawa & Saipan. I feel truly fortunate to have heard some of their stories first hand, we miss you Brownie & Norm. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. FLY NAVY!!!
I learned about Rosie in the excellent book "Masters of the Air, a thorough history of the Eighth. He could have gone home after 30 missions but chose to stay and fight- and then wanted to go to the Pacific!
A flying hero and legend. Thanks Rosie!
AMERICA! OUR AMERICA!
Thank you so much Rosie for making us who we are. You have exhibited thru your experiences that you and millions more just like that have passed on that it is those just like you that have sustained our presence, our past, and hopefully our future.
God Bless & Godspeed
