Im Nicaragua special forces, ive been to Russia and trained with spetsnaz, did courses with them. they also come here to train certain phases of our special forces. friday and saturday was fight days, we would have matches against our combat buddy and against anyone, maybe 15 or 30. Im pretty good with it but i remember a lot of times when i tried to take down one of these russian guys and it was like hitting a brick wall. you just have to accept the mauling youre about to receive.

Sport Sambo is more like Judo than wrestling (I have some medals, so have an idea of what it is and isn't) and most of the highest level guys are Judo players too. Combat Sambo is pretty sporty in some regards, it's not as similar to MMA as ppl think, and scoring points with grappling is still the primary way most ppl win. Military/Combatives Sambo is another thing entirely, but the military is known to hold competitions similar to Combat Sambo such as Armeyskiy Rukopashniy Boy

In Cael's defense, if I remember right, that was the Worlds right after college. He was winning most the match but after a rally by Gatsalov, he lost in sudden death OT. As far as I'm concerned, Sanderson is the GOAT. Freestyle is a different game and he transitioned to beat the best of the best. Sanderson (and Gatsalov) went on to Olympic gold in '04.

Cael is the Greatest to ever lace them up till now.
This next generation going to be something crazy.
I watched it happen in Florida, Florida was not a wrestling State years ago and the talent level in the past 10 years been crazy. Probably top seven toughest states to wrestle. Pennsylvania and New Jersey still a good ways better, but man we have gotten good.
Now seeing these HS kids hang and beat National Champs is crazy.
One other thing I find crazy is all the parents holding their children back a year before HS for their wrestling careers.
My boys became best in the state starting as Freshman. They took beatings because they were wrestling kids with 10 years experience and held back. Allot of only ifs because they were the best in the state their final year, but if they started age 5 and 6 they could of taken so much further. It becomes a way of life. Crazy, crazy sport. Oh, it takes no prisoners, oldest comes into Senior season as top 3 in the state and stretches a nerve and loses all strength on right side of his body. Was scary because not sure it come back.
Youngest beats the number 2 right before Regionals but injures his chest and misses states. It was so tough, all that work and had a great story of only wrestling for 3 years and never playing any sports to being too 3 in the state. Would of been tough to win since Kendrick Hodge, top 20 in the country he would of seen in the finals last year.
