Barlow's wheel, electric motor

  • #Roobert33 Shares in a magnetic field of a magnet. The wheel of Barlow is a tool purely didactic, but is an example of an electric motor, in fact it transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy. The metal wheel with a horizontal axis has the edge outcropping in the mercury contained in a tank. An intense magnetic field is generated by a magnet. To the two clamps set on wooden board it connects a battery or a power supply of 12 volts DC. The circuit goes from the clamp at the center of the loop down along the wheel and get into the tank where is located the mercury below which there is a wire connected to the other clamp. As soon as you close the circuit the wheel starts spinning.The explanation lies in the Lorentz force acting on the electrons which run radially when it closes the circuit. / @electricexperimentsro...

    Este es un motor homopolar de Faraday...Pero tiene un problema grave: EL MERCURIO ES TÓXICO!!!...Debieras probar y reemplazarlo por una solución de agua acidulada o salada...Por ejemplo H2O + HCl...O puedes probar con H2O + NaCl también...Pero es un buen experimento...Saludos.

      Yes this and another beam type was adapted from a steam engine by Bourbouze: both were early DC motors. Or Davenport's in the US that uses brushes and commutors. But they were not practical economically. Only with the development of AC motors and dynamos did it become a serious source of motive energy.

    I found a used Barlow wheel that uses mercury. New don't use mercury anymore. What size battery should I use? A 12v made sparks and threw mercury all over. A 9v does not do the job. I hope to hear from someone.

    • @ElectricExperimentsRobert33
      @ElectricExperimentsRobert33  4 роки тому

      Of course 12V is too powerful, 9V you say it is little, actually 9V is ideal. If it doesn't work at 9V, there is some hitch in the system. You have to check it well.

    So with a load greater than itself in series the wheel acts as an A/C oscillator, and when the wheel is the load it acts as a simple D/C rotor? Please forgive me if my question sounds silly.

    • @EddSjo
      @EddSjo 8 років тому

      +Paul Trace No, it's always just a simple D/C rotor. The reason it spins faster without the lightbulb in series is because the motor is basically a short between the battery poles, letting many amperes run through the rotor.

  • @rabeaahmad4083

    What does it mean it absorbs to much amperes. If i measure the flowing current i get first about 10 A (with two 9V batteries parallel) but then the amperes drop to 0,4 A. Where did the Amperes go and why doesn't this happen with mercury?

    • @ElectricExperimentsRobert33
      @ElectricExperimentsRobert33  8 років тому +2

      The mercurybeing an liquid metal, absorb less current compared to a solid metal. The mercury has a molecular feature.

      Brushes - a soft brass brush that touches two of the fingers should work. Then you notice the brushes would work better if what they contact is smoother, and then if it's self lubricating, and the whole thing evolves into a modern dc motor with an armature and carbon brushes.
