It's not one or the other Rory, Mikel has gone beyond a single style of football.
They are neither Mourinho nor Guardiola in playing style. Mikel with his personnel acquisitions and his own footballing philosophy, has created a team that can adapt and play any style of football. And they and Arteta adapted against Spurs and City, as the game states change, as personnel availability changes.
Mikel is always talking about adaptability, and this is what he has created..........Arsenal are neither one nor the other, they are all of the different styles rolled into one......

As an Arsenal fan of 20+ years, I couldn't care less how we do it. I just want to win. But let's be clear, defending for 45 mins with 10 men to protect a lead away at the best team in the world, is not like Mourinho's Chelsea coming to fifth-place Arsenal and playing for a nil-nil with 11 men. Equating the two removes all context, which is also what the pundits giving Arsenal no credit have been doing.
I am an Arsenal fan who lived through that period and I have to admit in retrospect Mourinho had every right to set up his team as he saw fit. Also, Arsene, even though was a great coach when it came to creating a playing style and identity, he seemed to lack a plan B when he came up against an opponent that was tactically astute.

I think most Arsenal fans remember the George Graham era, when WE were "boring, boring Arsenal" and our most famous chant was "1-0 to the Arsenal". It's like newer/younger fans think Wenger-ball is how Arsenal have always played...
He's being disingenuous here anyway, we're neither one or the other now. The important point is Arteta can & will do both when necessary. We scored 91 goals in the league last year, the most Arsenal have ever scored in a league season, even more than the invincibles. This isn't a team who can only park the bus & play for 1-0 wins.

On this one Rory you are right. I was often frustrated by the lack of pragmatism from Wenger. Man U and Chelsea would come and play simple counter attack football over and over again knowing Wenger was stuck in his ways. They'd take 3 points regardless of their form.
I'm an Arsenal fan and the Invisible season was one of the 1st full seasons that I've followed. The immediate season to follow was José's peak and I feared Chelsea. I hated them at the time, but in the years to follow I realised we need that edge, whether in the era we had Fabregas and Van Persie or the 2016 season when we finished 2nd. We just needed that edge.

Great video, although I would disagree about Arsenal being only a defensive team. They can also be expansive at times and score quite a lot of goals. Arteta has built a very versatile team that can adapt to various styles of play depending on the opposition.

The first memory of me being a Arsenal Fan is the unjustice of losing a CL final to Barca. I've been raised by the Wenger purist era and lived through glamorous and splendid football represented. We've got nowhere near the pinnacle in the league at that time, yet during last two seasons it felt wrong even though we came second in the league. It's not rubbing the right way - it wasn't 'the Arsenal way' 4 me. This season hits different. Sending offs for a second yellow are ringing the bells of RvP sending off during cup tie with Barcelona (usual culprit). The situation back then was that we lost it - maybe with Arteta we would survive? Let's just say I'm beginning to believe - but I would love to have that Wenger identity preserved.
PS. Been watching the Mancity game with my father - pop is talismanic when it comes to Guardiola (or at least I hoped so). Last I watched a game with him we won 2:1 with Barca at the emirates in 2011.:) This was a close one.

I'm a fan old enough to remember George Graham as Arsenal manager, and I think Mikel Arteta is closer to him in a lot of respects than Mourinho, but I can understand that Arteta would've studied someone like Mourinho too. The chant "Boring Boring Arsenal" was coined under Graham's tenure as Manager as was "One Nil to The Arsenal". People complained about the style of football then, but Arsenal still won the League twice under Graham and he almost did the Invincibles in 1991, losing only one game to Chelsea as it happens. Do I want to see beautiful free-flowing football? Yes I do. But I want to win. I want us to lift the trophies that we deserve to lift. Attack wins games but defence wins titles...simple.

Any Arsenal fan upset about a pragmatic approach forgets our own history. Yes, we had Wenger who pioneered much of modern football. But before him was George Graham, famous for winning at Anfield, 18 goals conceded in the 91 title ("1 nil, to The Arsenal") and the Cup Winners Cup, our only European success in the last 50 years ( it's not the Champions League, but it shouldn't be sneered at - silverware is silverware). That was all from a pragmatic approach, and a strong defense.

We just knew you only got better because of 💰💰💰 even with the help of a Russian, you're behind Arsenal as overall we have more trophies and the bigger worldwide fan base and we're the 3rd biggest club in England. So imagine how big we would of been if Roman brought us.
As an Arsenal fan I really didn't enjoy the 'pretty football' days with no competitive edge vs Jose teams etc... and was why I was always a strong advocate for Wenger moving on a bit sooner than he did. (Respectfully) I wished we could adapt and not have to be so 'pure' in every single game after seeing the result as a loss every time in these games. Now to have a manager who can play some amazing attacking football (Season before last we were blowing teams out of the park first half of the season, and last season various 0-6, 0-5, 4-1 results after New Year) But who also has the adaptibility to do what needs to be done in games away at the Etihad vs a team that's dominated this league for years, it's a breath of fresh air.
Competing against City is no easy task and something only Arsenal and Liverpool have recently done (and not much actual success for either) and I feel like every season we are starting to slowly grind them down and get closer, the reactions from the game last week shout this the loudest.
Those terms can describe Arteta, but he doesn’t typically start with those tactics. At City, we were forced into them. However, if we had reached the 65th or 70th minute at 2-1 with 11 men, he would have still shut up shop. I believe Arteta has more balance. To answer the question, I don’t care about being the “better club”; I want my team to win. Whether we blow a team out of the water 5-0 with expansive attacking football or win 1-0 with the most defensive display ever, using a 6-4-0 formation, it’s all about the 3 points. Back then, playing pretty football was all we had, so naturally, we didn’t like Jose’s defensive style. But now, I just want my team to win, no matter the cost. I love that Arteta has that fancy football in his locker, I also love he has a Jose style in his back pocket. I loved Wenger, and always will, but I hated his inability to adjust to certain opposition.

But everyone needs to calm down, it’s all getting a bit much haha…Our hand has been forced slightly to adopt a more defensive style over the last run of fixtures which has also included going down to 10 men twice (a factor everyone seems to just ignore) but this doesn’t suddenly mean we’re anything like Chelsea or are set up to play “boring” football…. Last year we scored a record high goals in a season for the club, and when Ode is back I expect the goal tally to rocket again. Everyone just loves to waffle tho these days haha 🙃

I was one of those fans who thought (and perhaps still do) that there's a right way of winning and a wrong way of winning, but nearly 2 decades of poor results and winning only "the top 4 trophy" and the occasional FA cup I've come to realise that if you want success in the modern game need every percent available, at the peak of sport the small margins matter and Arsenal should embrace the "dark arts" if that's what it takes to win.

I'm a Wenger ball enjoyer Arsenal fan. I love seeing fast paced slick passing and attacking football. But there are times when it is not possible and that's when we have to pragmatic and show grit and have a plan B, C or a D. Mikel Arteta encapsulates all of these factors. I love Wenger, but every Arsenal fan will agree that it was frustrating to see us play in only one way and rarely had a plan B. Even the purist fans agree, getting a result and winning is more important than anything. If you can't win a game, don't lose. That's Arteta's philosophy. And try whatever is necessary to win. Hell we have dog called Win. The culture around the club has changed. It's no longer just about playing champaign football.

I think the Key is the motto "Victory in Harmony" you can be harmonious in "beautiful" football which under Wenger is what I grew up on. I think for the first time Arsenal Fans are seeing the beauty and Harmony in solid defensive work and a grit to win!
