The big give away could hear the key action of the metal flute, and its tone was a bit brighter, while the wooden one was darker and a little airier. You had a beautiful tone on both. I love the Zelda tribute. Some of my favorite series growing up. Gonna have to lean more towards the wooden flute. yup after ten years with the metal flute, I played several models of wooden flutes, and it was love at first play. I feel like for concert level is necesary the modern boehm, but for my interests and way of playing the wooden one was just smooth like cutting butter with hot knife. I guess there is the intermediate point of the wooden head and body with the Boehm system.
A lot of modern metal flutes are played with piercing purity and auto-vibrato that can be really draining to listen to. I've really come to prefer wooden flutes in most cases these days!
@@InstrumentManiac There is this old video of an interview with Matt Molloy (irish flute) and Sir James Galway, I think there they mentioned that the Boehm modern system aims for perfection in tune and bright, while in the wooden you must try to find the right balance for intonation... What a magnificent piece of living history those wooden flutes 💖
The simple system flute have a weaker sound than the Bohem system one. The second has larger tone holes and a cylindrical bore instead of conical. Because of this it's sound has more overtones or harmonics and the sound is a little bit brighter and louder. The higher register tends to normalize between them because the notes start to depend more of the embochure and air velocity. In consequence the tone holes begin to be more irrelevant than in the low register where they do need to be large. This also happens with recorders where the high register tends to be equal in sound (not in intonation of course) between expensive and cheap models.

Alright, here were my guesses for the instrument: ✓ B ✓ B ✓ A ✓ Metal ✓ Wood ✗ Metal ✓ Metal ✗ Wood As for the songs: ✓ TLoZ Main Theme ✓ Zelda's Lullaby ✓ Lost Woods ✓ Song of Storms ✓ Not sure, something from Wind Waker, probably _(I've never personally played it),_ maybe Dragon Roost Island? ✗ _No_ clue. ✗ Damn, this one is so familiar, but I can't put a finger on it. ✗ I have never heard this before, but _wow,_ it's beautiful. For the kind of flute, it did come down to the key action sometimes as someone else mentioned, but also certain note articulations or nuances of open holes! I tried to use the tone as well, but that just was getting too far into splitting hairs for me. At least, having a bit of experience with key and open holed winds helped me with the former. I have to agree with you that I find wood flutes to be more pleasant to listen to/play! _(I'm personally really sensitive to loud and shrill noises.)_ Honestly the differences in tone and projection appeal to me because I __love__ playing expressively. Wood just feels more natural to me because of that, especially because of the unique articulations I mentioned earlier.
Round 1 B, B, A, all Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time songs (forgot the name, Zelda's Lullaby, Lost Woods?) Round 2: Song of Storms, Wooden? Windwaker sailing song, Metal? Don't know the song name, Metal? Don't recognize the song, Wooden? Can't remember the name, Metal?

1.B & i believe it's a zelda song but idk the name 2-3. A idk the game nor song 4-6. wood 7. metal 8. wood i noticed that the wood flute was a bit deeper in tone compared to the metal flute
That was a lot of fun! The music from Zelda is beautiful, the is a french horn solo in part of the Skyward sword that brings tears to my eyes when I hear it. The resonance of the metal flute made it pretty hard to miss but they are wonderful. Thanks

This was my guess initially: Song #1: A - Metal, B - Wood ✅ Song #2: A - Metal, B - Wood ✅ Song #3: A - Wood, B - Metal ✅ Song #4: Wood ❌ Song #5: Wood ✅ Song #6: Metal ❌ Song #7: Metal ✅ Song #8: Metal ✅ Let's see how I did... 😬 not so bad I was trying to hear how you were pressing the note which causes more wood vibration and you are absolutely right Luke, the lower notes have more a woody vibration, when playing higher notes, it makes it harder to distinguish metal/wood flute.
1. B (✔️) 2. B (✔️) 3. A (✔️) 4. Metal (✔️) 5. Wood (✔️) 6. Wood (✔️) 7. Metal (✔️) 8. Wood (❌) And well, I always played metal flute, so metal flute is my life

I can tell that the wooden flute sounds warmer while the silver bodied flute is more shiny and tinny sound than a wood version. Its like your comparing white wine and red wine. Nc comparison 😍
The wooden flute is a nach Meyer type from Germany, 1850 is too early, it would be around 1880-1920. Ebony was very rarely used outside of the Baroque period because it´s prone to cracking, this wood is more likely Grenadilla, Cocus or some type of rosewood. There are many types of simple system wooden flutes that can sound very different from the one you played.
1: A* 1: B 3: A 4: Metal 5: Metal* 6: Wood 7: Wood* 8: Metal Alright, I got more than half right! I am not disappointing my middle school or high school band directors!

1 - B ❌ 2 - B ✔ 3 - A ✔ 4 - Metal ✔ 5 - Wood ✔ 6 - Wood ✔ 7 - Metal ✔ 8 - Metal ✔ 7 was mostly a guess for me. Its a very pure note. I got 1 wrong since I thought the one that sonded more in tune to me was metal. Not too bad a score since Im a clarinet player lol
Great homage to Zelda❤️! I like a good metal flute for a good solid sound and fast sharp tapering. Wooden flutes I adore. I enjoy the softer tone, a more varied sound when they contract expand and get wet. I love how they mimic the d major scale naturally and give a sense of mystic wonder. Both are just as good but I prefer wood though you'll need to oil it. Also better sustainability wise
I was feeling so confident after getting the first three right. Then, I got every song wrong except for #8. 4/8 total, so not nearly the expert you are. This was incredibly fun, and I would love to see how you could experiment with this further!
I got about a 50%, Geuss I should stick with clarinet huh? Anyways amazing vid, your the reason I wanna branch out to more than just the small amount I know (that being clarinet, great bass clarinet, alto sax, guitar (really badly), and soon I will be learning violin), thanks for the inspiration my guy!
Maybe experiment with different instruments more, and go for something that's versatile and sounds nice, then no life it and suffer though the agony until you are a god at whatever that may be
The bigger give away is due to the different mechanisms on the two instruments. If you had say, two flute from say Powell they would be much more similar but there would still be a difference.
My guesses 1. A wrong 2. B 3. B wrong 4. Metal 5. Wood 6. Metal wrong 7. Wood wrong 8. Metal I didn’t do as bad as I thought I would do. I am a drummer and didn’t think I would do the greatest and the fact that I got some of the right made me happy! Great videos! Keep it up!
1. B - Main Theme, The Legend of Zelda 2. B - Zelda's Lullaby, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 3. A - Saria's Song, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 4. Metal - Song of Storms, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 5. Wood - Dragon Roost Island, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker 6. Wood - still don't know Edit: Okay so I got the first three right (except Lost Woods instead of Saria's Song, but they are basically the same). I got 4-6 perfect, which I'm happy about. I did get metal for 7, but I completely messed up 8 hahahaha.
I play the metal flute, but honestly the wooden flute sounds very nice, i'd love to play on of these one day. And I did really horeibly in the quiz, i only got these where you could hear the clicking of the flaps (i dont know if thats correct english) of the metal flute or the uneven tone of the wooden flute.
Okay so. 1: a 2: b 3: b 4: wood 5: wood 6: metal 7: wood 8: metal Edit: Well I got exactly half right. Idk whether to be proud or what. But my logic was sound I believe- I just had the features of the wood and metal ones backwards lol
My opinion on this is that the wood was a lot heavier in tone color. With guessing the wood flute I was trying to visualize the sound from your 69 instrument video where there was a whole wood flute solo. Anyways here are my guesses 1. B 2. B 3. A 4. Metal 5. Wood 6. Metal 7. Wood 7. Metal 8. Wood These videos are pretty fun to do.
I think you can always tell it in some orchestral pieces when they play high-pitched tones approaching the piccolo range. Metal flutes seem to handle this more gracefully...
I play the flute and recorder, but my flute teacher showed me her Irish flute on the third lesson so I understood the tone and difficulties a bit better which helped. I wish say that the last one was REALLY hard, to the point that I’m not sure what I said once I checked the memo lol. But I got the others all correct
You can definitely tell which is metal they both sound beautiful in there own way but the metal one is more idk how to put it. Resonant? Its more echoey
mostly just here to guess the video game songs, I couldn't even tell unless it was visual from the beginning. 1. Hyrule Legend of Zelda series...B is wooden? 2.Zelda's lullaby, also Zelda...A is wooden. 3.Lost Woods. Zelda, again. B wooden 4.Windmill/Song of Storms, Majora's Mask/Ocarina of Time 5. Dragon Roost Island, Wind Waker 6.It's beautiful. First one I don't recognize. Probably Zelda I guess lol 7.Link to the Past...yup 8.Maybe it's Spirit Tracks or something else I never played. (IT WAS SOMETHING ELSE I HAVEN'T PLAYED ENTIRELY LMAO) Also I do LIKE the wooden flute, but you were saying about open holes...aren't there open hole metal flutes? Wood did sound better to me tho. Thanka you for this
I wasn't writing them down because I was eating, but I got either all of them correct or all-but-one. The metal flute just has a clearer high-end, and the wooden one has a slightly slower attack. That's the "signature" I was using anyway. It was definitely more similar in a final mix, but the wooden one still has a slightly rounder warmer tone.
1. B TLOZ main theme 2. B ? (i know its from zelda but i dont know which) 3. A TLOZ OOT Korok forest 4. Wood TLOZ OOT Saria's song 5. Metal ? 6. Wood TLOZ Link's awakening 7. Wood ? 8. Metal ?
I'm a flutist and was able to guess each instrument correctly, so pretty happy about that. I'm not a gamer, so I didn't know any of the titles, oh well. I would say the wood flute has a slightly softer, earthy sound where the concert C is brighter and more linear. Either way, your developed tone gave performances that made them sound enjoyable.
Song 1 The Legend of Zelda Main Theme 1st metal 2nd wood Song 2 Zelda's Lullaby 1st metal 2nd wood Song 3 Sarabi's Song 1st wood 2nd netal Song 4 (Favorite) Song of Storms Metal Flute Song 5 Dragon Roost Island Wood Flute Song 6 Ballad of the Windfish Wood Flute tho Song 7 Seal of 7 Maidens Metal Flute Song 8 Nayru's Song metal flute My opinion is that the Wood Flute is more relaxed and peaceful whereas it's grandson or counterpart is more energetic
How I told the difference is because the wood sounds reedy and has a scuffle/softness/clothlike sound like anything rubbed across wood not just wind. The metal sounds more like a hard substance than something that is porous and the vibration seems more intense and consistent. I still got 6 and 7 wrong though.
Song 1: B - NES LoZ, Intro Song Song 2: B - LoZ Ocarina of Time, Zelda's Lullaby Song 3: A - LoZ, Lost Woods Song 4: Wood - LoZ Ocarina of Time, Song of Storms Song 5: Metal - No Clue Song 6: Metal - No Clue Song 7: Wood - No Clue Song 8: Metal - No Clue again rip

The good thing is that you can pick it up again when you feel like it.

I’ve been playing the flute for 15 years. I know what the metal sounds like, and I love the wooden flute so much more. I wish I could afford a quality one.
I got so distracted by the awesome Zelda music that I completely forgot the challenge in its entirety…
completely acceptable 👏👏
I actually tried but it was difficult so I just started to enjoy the songs
Congrats on 100K btw!!!! You deserve it!!

100k! I’m so happy for you!
That was a lot of fun! The music from Zelda is beautiful, the is a french horn solo in part of the Skyward sword that brings tears to my eyes when I hear it. The resonance of the metal flute made it pretty hard to miss but they are wonderful. Thanks
Happy 100k dude!!!

I was trying to hear how you were pressing the note which causes more wood vibration and you are absolutely right Luke, the lower notes have more a woody vibration, when playing higher notes, it makes it harder to distinguish metal/wood flute.
great job!
Congrats on 100,000 subscribers, Luke!

you play very well!
Yoooooooooooo so close to 100k subs!!!

B B A metal wood metal wood wood? I’ve played for five years and you’re making me want a wooden flute ❤
okay so you have done this with a clarinet and a flute, whats next? saxophone, bassoon, oboe?
🎷👀
Maybe experiment with different instruments more, and go for something that's versatile and sounds nice, then no life it and suffer though the agony until you are a god at whatever that may be
I tried to do the guessing activity but it wouldn't let me pause and type so here's a comment just for the algorithm's sake. Good luck dude 😎
bless 🙏🙏
The bigger give away is due to the different mechanisms on the two instruments. If you had say, two flute from say Powell they would be much more similar but there would still be a difference.

I didn’t do as bad as I thought I would do. I am a drummer and didn’t think I would do the greatest and the fact that I got some of the right made me happy! Great videos! Keep it up!

6. Wood - Ballad of the Wind Fish, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
7. Metal - yeah nah I got no clue
8. Wood - still don't know
Edit: Okay so I got the first three right (except Lost Woods instead of Saria's Song, but they are basically the same). I got 4-6 perfect, which I'm happy about. I did get metal for 7, but I completely messed up 8 hahahaha.
I play the metal flute, but honestly the wooden flute sounds very nice, i'd love to play on of these one day. And I did really horeibly in the quiz, i only got these where you could hear the clicking of the flaps (i dont know if thats correct english) of the metal flute or the uneven tone of the wooden flute.
a good way for this is the metal one you can hear way more mechanisms so you can tell which one is metal.
Oh, wood is the best.
It’d be cool to have a section of wood flutes in an orchestra with one or two metal ones for color.

The sound of the metal flute’s keys closing kind of gave it away. Other than that, fun video!
My opinion on this is that the wood was a lot heavier in tone color. With guessing the wood flute I was trying to visualize the sound from your 69 instrument video where there was a whole wood flute solo. Anyways here are my guesses

i really enjoyed this video because all the songs were from zelda games the best game franchise imo ❤️❤️❤️

B wooden
4.Windmill/Song of Storms, Majora's Mask/Ocarina of Time
5. Dragon Roost Island, Wind Waker
6.It's beautiful. First one I don't recognize. Probably Zelda I guess lol
7.Link to the Past...yup
8.Maybe it's Spirit Tracks or something else I never played. (IT WAS SOMETHING ELSE I HAVEN'T PLAYED ENTIRELY LMAO)
Also I do LIKE the wooden flute, but you were saying about open holes...aren't there open hole metal flutes? Wood did sound better to me tho. Thanka you for this
I wasn't writing them down because I was eating, but I got either all of them correct or all-but-one. The metal flute just has a clearer high-end, and the wooden one has a slightly slower attack. That's the "signature" I was using anyway. It was definitely more similar in a final mix, but the wooden one still has a slightly rounder warmer tone.

So glad you chose the links awakening wind fish song

Song 5 Dragon Roost Island Wood Flute
Song 6 Ballad of the Windfish Wood Flute tho
Song 7 Seal of 7 Maidens Metal Flute
Song 8 Nayru's Song metal flute
My opinion is that the Wood Flute is more relaxed and peaceful whereas it's grandson or counterpart is more energetic
How I told the difference is because the wood sounds reedy and has a scuffle/softness/clothlike sound like anything rubbed across wood not just wind. The metal sounds more like a hard substance than something that is porous and the vibration seems more intense and consistent. I still got 6 and 7 wrong though.
