CONGRADULATIONS on accomplishing the 7th deadliest job in the world. With my 20+ years in the industry i wish i could have been there to offer advice and help (as well as howl with laughter as you figured things out). The talcum powder trick is normaly used in drag tyres to stop the tube from melting to the casing due to excesive heat (makes next removal alot easier). You hit all the major safety factors by cleaning the rim and lock rings. Replace all 4 lock rings when they next come apart as they are all beyond allowable wear (the spring has come out of them to a dangerous level). Air down tyres on the truck before removing and stay out from in front of the wheel while air is going out or in (its them rings that do the killing). The ratchet strap should never be used as a saftey device when airing up ( they are just not strong enough only hold to 5 psi). If need the saftey while airing the tyre up slide it under the MOG in thickest part of frame you can reach. 10 full wraps with a 13MM chain will only hold between 30-40 psi before becoming shrapnel. Find a thick wall pipe that will slide over the handle of your breaker bar to extend your leverage and increase your torque (like the handle of a hi-lift jack). A 50/50 dish soap water mix works well as a lubricant to make rubber slide on metal way better :) (proper lube is linseed oil same stuff you polish your wood furniture with). THANK YOU so much for this vid and your positive out look thru a very tough job. Hope you get a chance soon to take a weekend off to enjoy what you have done so far.. Looking forward to more amazing content from even if it's you 2 playing in the sand and surf LOL.

Reading this 3 years on - I wonder how many people have had their ass saved by this excellent comment ?
Tyres are like huge scary pressure vessels that are designed to flex and everyone acknowledges they will give out sooner or later. They are killers dressed in black.

Hey guys I’m super impressed ! I work as a tyre fitter and those wheels are a pain sometimes ! Great job tho just takes practice ! Only thing I’d say is make sure you give the lock ring a tap with a hammer when you first start to inflate the tyre upto about 10 psi. Make sure the lock ring seats correctly when it’s not seated correctly It can come off ! Just a wee bit of safety to help you along the way ! Amazing job tho ! Well impressed 👍👍

In regard to split-rim inflation safety, Autocar magazine (the original one) published a photograph back in the 1970s which showed the shape of a body on the ceiling of a Norwegian workshop. The deceased worker had inflated a tire on a split-rim wheel, without using a safety frame.
I was happy that our NZ Army Unimogs had tubeless tyres. Much easier and safer when taking tyres off and turning them around as part of the tyre rotation process. The motor pool at the main camp had a hydraulic bead breaker which is a very nice tool for big wheels and tyres.

Always watch your videos but was a little scared when you were fitting the tyres, these split rim tyres can kill if not fitted correctly you always need to pump to max pressure to make sure the split ring is seated properly. Fitted tyres for a living and to this day I will not let tyre shops use rattle guns on my vehicles. Thanks for sharing. Cheers

Hey guys, I have a few pointers for you, as someone who has sadly had to change heaps of those buggers...
Firstly, get a bead breaker, and break the bead after you deflate the tyre but before you remove the lock ring.
It makes removal of the lock ring so much easier..
When you're getting the tyre off, find a round block about 30cm tall. When you're ready, with the wheel tyre assy upright, place the block in a spot where it will be in the middle of the rim. Drop assy onto block, and watch the tyre pop off.
When reassembling, look for a weld on the split rim, and place it opposite the gap in the lock ring.
Try and find a heavy chain to wrap through the assy prior to re-inflation.
Good to see you're thinking about safety, but a ratchet strap won't do much if it goes bang.
Good luck with the build, looks awesome!
Oh, and you should see a bit more speed with those new donuts 👌

The notch in the Jack handle is for placing the rim back on. The hole in the rim opposite the valve place the bar through and on the hub there is a notch. Lift it slightly and it will slide o to the hub everything. To get tyre of the rim easy once the split has been removed connect air to it and it will simply pop off. When putting air back in wrap a chain around and place under the axle. I have seen the split go through a brick war. Lube is your best friend

To get the wheel nuts off you need to use the breaker bar and load it up as much as possible then smack the socket on the nut with a lump hammer as hard as you can. This will shock the nut and break the bond on the threads. Wear gloves because the crack when it lets go really hurts.
When you put the nuts back on use plenty of copper grease to stop them seizing on again.

I was in the ARA at the time - and yes, it was a truck split rim that killed the poor guy after he was launched into the workshop roof. A safety cage is essential when dealing with split rims. That ratchet strap would have done nothing if the locking ring let go. As someone else commented, at least they kept their distance during inflation in case something went wrong, but as others have also pointed out this is not a job to do without the appropriate safety equipment.

Last time I did this was in 2006. Nearly killed me with the amount of labour and time that goes into breaking beads and changing tyres so I know how much you must be hurting right now. Hats off to you for a job well done. Now get a bit of rest.

Great work guys, really impressed with your tenacity!
I reckon wheels should be the same colour as the cab. Save black for accents and trim👍.

I virtually hurted for you as I imagined the mental grind of knowing you had to repeat the experience with the first tire with all the rest over and over again (and potentially worse). Good stuff.

Do the wheels in sand or the colour of the cab. After getting down and dirty they will be that colour anyway. Don't forget to do the spare tire too!! I hope they weren't directional tires...

the thick rubber flap is called a rust band and stops flakes of rust from the wheel puncturing the tube....i've done 44" tyres by hand and it gets easier the more you do it.....get a truck tyre fitter to show you how to do it easier
