  • This is the first video in the Building a Balance 482 Catamaran series.
Here you will follow the build of the first Balance 482 Catamaran from tooling to launch and sea trials of hull #1.
This video shows the first stages of the hull mold and deck plug construction up to the demolding of the hull and mocking up the layout. The hull mold is constructed using thousands of CNC-cut shutter ply frames and meranti stringers. This framework is then cladded with weather-proof ply and faired until smooth. The same process is then applied to the deck plug, from which the deck mold is manufactured using E-Glass and resins with structural reinforcement behind it.
The Balance 482 hull is laminated in one piece without the need for additional joining laminates and tabbing, which helps to save weight . The structural PVC foam core material is thermo formed and vacuum bagged to assist with further weight savings and to provide structural integrity to this performance sailing catamaran. Furthermore, all bulkheads are properly tabbed in and we use carbon fiber in high-load areas for extra stiffness and strength.
All the structural detailing and design is done by our partner, Du Toit Yacht Design, using state-of-the art software which includes Catia. We will show you more of this process and share some of this naval architecture with you in another video.

This is great! Please more detail and longer shots. Especially on the interior and exterior layout. Also, I would really like to see a video on how your testing with the Integrel Alternator system on the engines is coming. You are one of the only companies that have said you are testing this system.

Huge congrats! Exciting to see the 482 molds and first hull get built. Like the 442, the 482 is going to be very successful.
Nice to see production picking up even further in Cape Town.

Thanks, Loanword! Production on the 482 is much further than this video - we are catching up with the build series - so keep an eye on our UA-cam channel :)

It certainly helps to form a relationship with the brand, when you follow along the construction process. I’ve shared your channel with a few people now, and the response is amazing! I’m yet to hear a negative, and they’re a tuff crowd. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work! 😎🏖🌴☀️🇦🇺

It's still unfortunate you guys couldn't figure out a way to keep the winches down at the helm. As I've mentioned before, having the winches up removes one of the main advantages of the versa helm, which is being able to stay out of inclement weather.

Maybe they will all be electric and you won't have to go out quite as often. BufBillsFTW, Pavilion Ny is my hometown.

@@brucesinclair2981 We will do the 526 with the winches down or up, but the standard boat has them up now. The reasons are this:
      1. There is less friction when they are up so we can use a smaller electric winch or winches which reduces the cost to the consumer
      2. When you have them down you need to have a "well" under the helm if you want to be able to sit to trim the winches with the top slid closed. This is fine, but it means having a sliding floor. So that is a con for some as you have to slide the floor back and forth to go up or down. If there is no well it is pretty cramped when operating the winches.
      3. Of the owners who have had the winches up on the 526 they say that when it is time to reef they go up, do it, slide the top closed and that is that. Exposure to cold or rain is brief and then you close the top, lower the helm and pilot down. One of our customers has over 40,000 miles on his top winch design and is very happy with it.
On the 482 and 442 we had to standardize the design and tooling to hold down our pricing as best we could. On the 526 and others we allow for more customization so some want the winches down, most want them up.

@@codylapoint Let me comment more. When you are voyaging you are almost never in the up helm, but always have the helm down. You set the sails for the course and
seldom have to trim and re-trim. When you do, 99% of the time you slide the top open and it isn't raining, you do the deed and go back down. Or you reef. Very low and limited exposure to the elements if you wish. When racing you are at the up helm if you want to be tweaking the sails all the time. But I do not know of anyone who is ocean racing and that jacked up to do this all day long! Won't be me! If day sailing you open the top and enjoy the weather, if sunny pop up the sun bimini.
If you are utterly opposed to ever getting wet, even for a brief stint, you can leave the sun bimini in the up position and tack on a removable eisenglass front. Simple to do. But in our experience with four of the 526 with up winches nobody has ever felt this need or asked us to do this. Aesthetically, I find pop up biminis and eisenglass enclosures over helms quite ugly. A lot of cats look like trawlers to me these days. But for anyone who thinks they like such a thing, or wants a permanent top, we have done a very pretty custom one for someone before in composite, and it can have an eisenglass front. It is pretty and sleek and permanent. It is just that when you really start to use a Balance you realize the helm is down most of the time. So going up to reef or tweak a sail is a very brief event. Either you leave up the sun bimini as you wish, leave it down, but you always want to walk up and down fast and easy to the helm, slide the top open or closed quickly, which works really well on the up winch design.
Nothing is warmer than being in the down helm with the top slid closed. You are also lower in the fulcrum so the ride is much nicer, very little up and down motion is felt.
      Stay in Balance, Phil

The "dimples " from making a female mould out of flat, non developable ply really stand out
