A Homesteader's Indoor Cold Storage Space for Food

Charlyn Ellis, a homesteader living in Corvallis, Oregon shows us her indoor cold storage space that she created to house certain foods in the winter months. She refers to it as her second refrigerator. This is like my most brilliant thing. This is

a cool storage space for the winter. It's ventilated. And it's insulated says insulation here there's insulation in the doors and the walls and also it stays cool. Actually, it's cooler in here than it is in the rest of the house even now, and it doesn't freeze because it's in the house so it's about the same

temperature as for your refrigerator running a little warm.

So, in here come late October, will have probably 70 pounds of onions. I will put

a put some apples in here most of the downstairs. The onions I'll get some oranges will gain here.

Any greens that we harvest or that we need to grow for the rehab for the winter, sit in here, anything that you want to keep cool that takes up too much space in your refrigerator. All my all summer it's just out there and I go out, get it, but if I do a big grocery shopper I go out to the farm and I get a big bag of colors, they'll live in here.

It will be packed in the winter, and it will be about 40 degrees in here.

So this is our ventilated cool spot it's our second refrigerator.

And you can also put a pot of soup out here to call down in the middle of the winter and various other things.

Very nice idea, do you store apples with other fruit and vegetables? Apples produce a gas that causes other fruit and vegetables to ripen faster.. some folks had a cold cabinet vented outside for cold storage in cold months. Homey homestead. ☮️ HTGDE.
