In an interview he mentioned that it wasn't Disney-like at all, but he wanted to portray their relationship as authentic and as realistic to real life teen relationships as possible bc we all know that when teens kiss it isn't just a slight peck. So he was aware of the situation but Josh and Olivia still made it something of their own.
