  • A last minute change of plans on our Rideau Canal cruise when we were unexpectedly confronted with the prospect of waiting too long to get where we were trying to get to. As my holiday time was limited, this delay would have cut it close for us to be able to reach our ultimate destination at Ottawa and being able to return home in a reasonable time frame.
    Look for more on the details in an upcoming episode of my 'Summer Cruise 2022' series; • Summer 2022 Cruise
    Here is a detailed Google Maps route for this portion of our cruise; www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mi...

    Oh shoot. Was looking forward to the whole trip. We have friends that are doing it this summer, and I told them to watch your videos. We also had other friends that went from Port Severn to Ottawa in 8 days. Can't imagine but they did it. Lol

      I was looking forward to seeing the whole Rideau myself, but that wasn't going to happen this time around. Keep an eye out for my long winded video coming up (when we return to Trenton) where I review my thoughts and impressions of the Rideau.
      As for your friends who went from Port Severn all the way to Ottawa in only 8 days, I find that difficult to fathom. I'm not saying it's impossible, but one would have to hit all of the locks with absolute perfect timing every time, and being on the water for full days, every day - and even that's a stretch.
      Again, not saying it's impossible, but OMG, that wouldn't be enjoyable at all! Might as well just hop in a car and drive to Ottawa 😉

    Nooooooooo… say it ain’t so!!! I was so looking forward to getting your impressions of the Rideau Canal! I know that you will be giving us an overview from Trenton, but the rest of the Rideau is so beautiful. You were just getting into the most (in my opinion) impressive cruising portion of the canal passing Jones Falls and beyond. That means you’ll have to come back this way. Lower Brewers is a very nice spot to stay overnight (shore power too). Can’t wait until next Thursday for your next video!😊

      Yeeeeeeeeeeees!! One of the reasons we decided to leave was hearing too many people telling us exactly that! It ended up being a real turn off and one of the reasons we wanted to leave. Seriously. Got to be too much after awhile and greatly diminished our experience there.
      True story.

      @@mikec4736 Too many times hearing that we heard how beautiful the Rideau was and how we HAVE TO cruise the entire length and we HAVE TO visit this place or that and how we HAVE TO stay at this lock or that/anchorage in this particular spot and we COULDN'T TURN AROUND because it's so beautiful just a little farther along...
      Now don't get me wrong, overall it was an experience that we are happy we got to do, but having folks continually and repeatedly (some were not happy unless they repeated the same thing 6 or 8 times!!!), it got to be too much. Honestly, if I had heard how beautiful (and not to be missed!!) The Opinicon was, I would have lost (what's left of my fragile) mind.
      All that definitely took away from what we were looking forward to as what we thought was going to be a new adventure. By this point in our travels however, we were only looking forward to departing the area in search of some quiet time elsewhere.
      Basically it came down to too many folks way overselling the place.

I got yelled at there from the lockmaster for leaving the captain's seat to try and catch the lock rod at the stern ...oops, lesson learnt! He was much nicer on the way back down 😅. Chaffeys lock was a beautiful spot to over night. We made it as far as the great little town of Westport. Ladydaldom.

      I actually had reservations for two nights at Westport, but ended up not making it that far. Oh well, it was a learning experience and no regrets about not getting any farther. We stayed overnight at upper Brewers, coming down from dows lake to bring our boat to gananoque. There is a large riverboat used in the early 1900's i believe that one was from 1920.. anyway it is now used as a cottage and we met the owners there on our overnight stay... Coming out of jones falls last summer may 2-4 weekend, that was when the hurricane came through and hit all of Ontario. The last lock opened at jones and then hit us... Roughest 15-20 minutes of boating we ever experienced.

      Never fun. When I was a teenager, we went through what I believe to be a borderline tornado while heading home on Lake Simcoe aboard the family's 32' aluminum houseboat. It was so intense that one of my parents' friends was on her knees in the middle of the cabin praying out loud for our deliverance 🤣

    Really nice spot to overnight. The scenery along the route would make great post cards! Your eisenglass panels look well cared for - may I ask what product(s) you use? I keep mine rolled up in pool noodles with sheets of jersey cotton fabric and zipped up in 6' long soccer goal net bags to keep them from being creased and scratched when stored. This was a recommendation from my canvas guy and so far it's worked well. The FL sun causes UV damage to clear vinyl panels and can destroy them in a few seasons if left up year round. Thankfully the Sunbrella fabric holds up fine.

    • @BoatingWithBoogaboo
      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  Рік тому

      Tell me you're just making all that up 😂 We use & have used for the past 20 years a very specific formula to clean out clear panels; water.
      That's it. Simple yet highly effective 👌

      @@BoatingWithBoogabooPaul, I wish I was - I kid you not! My canvas guy has been in business for about 20-30 years in the Clearwater area and he's done most of the boats at my current and former marina. He recommends Zep Vinyl Window Cleaner for routine cleaning and 210 Plastic Cleaner and Polish 3 times a year to keep them looking new. Saltwater tends to crystalize on the vinyl and collect dirt so water usually isn't enough to get them clean down here. The UV intensity in FL is extreme. Car tires fail from cracking due to UV damage before the treads wear out. People with RVs in their driveways need to put covers on the tires to protect them. I put my clear vinyl curtains up only when I need them and keep the Sunbrella mooring cover on when the boat is stored on the rack. This is the only way to make vinyl curtains last more than a few seasons down here. There's a price to be paid for living in paradise my friend!

      As much as I love our visits to the beautiful Sunshine State, the issues with keeping a boat down there are many. Years ago we actually looked at possibly buying a 2nd boat and leaving it there for winter use, but between barnacles, hurricanes and the things you pony out made it not something that I was interested in doing.
      As I pointed out to Anchor Girl, the last thing I want to do during a Florida getaway is more boat maintenance 😂

    • @Motorvader
      @Motorvader Рік тому

      @@BoatingWithBoogabooThe bottom growth on the gulf coast and western intracoastal is really bad unless you're on fresh water canal or river. The candy coral makes its way into raw water intakes. A friend has a 30' boat he keeps in the water year round on the Little Manatee and he has no growth issues so there are exception. Most people keep their boat on a rack or lift to avoid the bottom growth and maintenance issues (I've seen 45' flybridge cruisers on lifts!). The other option is the SoniHull ultrasonic growth protection system although I don't know anyone that's used it. Insurance with hurricane protection for my 310 Sundancer is a little over $1600/year so its not too bad if you live here. Boating 12 months a year is more expensive than a 3-4 month season up north. On the other hand we never have to winterize and shrink wrap our boats in FL. I think it all balances out if you live here.
