  • What happens when you grow Carrots in egg crates?
    I share my experience of growing carrots with egg crates in this video. You also learn how to grow carrots from Seed to Harvest. Egg crates help with spacing carrots and as well serve as mulch.

    If you wait 21-25 days to thin you can eat the thinned plants as microgreens instead of throwing them away. DELICIOUS!

    That’s a fantastic idea Dr Obi! I’ve grown carrots in pots for the last two years successfully, but this will add a new dimension for me. 👍🏻

    Using the egg crates for growing carrots is a great idea. You should germinate the seeds on a moistened paper towel and then you can pick up the sprouted ones and place them individually into the egg crate. I am definitely going to try this in my raised bed. Thank you

    Great way to reuse those old egg crates besides just tossing them in the compost! Super clever idea to add a little bit of sand over the seeds and water to get them germinating: I'll have to try that!

    Ingenious use of the egg crate. I have seen a polystyrene pizza base with holes spaced for carrots but your egg cardboard carton is much better. Thanks Dr OB.

    Excellent techniques, thanks for the ideas. I personally don't like using cling film though, so I will try this using a clear transparent lid covered with a rock or something heavy to weigh it down..

    Dr. Obi, your gardening skills are truly unparalleled in Africa! Every time I watch your content, I learn something new - like this innovative way of growing carrots. I'd love to see more videos on cultivating different vegetables. I noticed some algae on the harvested carrots; do you have any advice on how to reduce this? Would mulching be effective, or perhaps there's a natural spray you'd recommend?

    • @dr_obisgarden
      @dr_obisgarden  9 місяців тому +3

      Thanks for the kind compliment. I'm glad that you're learning something new from this channel. Actually the green color you saw on the carrot is actually chlorophyll. When any part of an actively growing carrot root is exposed to light, it starts developing chlorophyll so it can photosynthesize. You can prevent this from happening by mulching or simply covering the exposed part of the root with more soil.

    What a waste of seeds. Germinate the seeds first. Then place ONE germinated seed per hole. Or place thinned plants in a prepared egg carton in a pot.
