You know there is a true story about both & it is in military records along with the items to back each up. Medical records as well & yes an American proof it.
they are an acting military body within the UK military, so they regularly swap regiments who protect the queen and her family. So technically you aren't respecting the men and women who laid down their lives but it is respecting the men who are acting within the military and this moment and can be deployed if needed to
For those who don't know, the black and red flowers on the wreath are Flanders poppies. They are a traditional symbol for sacrifice and are often worn to commemorate the sacrifice of soldiers on occasions such as ANZACS Day. So a wreath of them is an appropriate testament to the sacrifice of the unknown servicemen entombed in that shrine.
Yes in the UK there is a Poppy Day in which you can buy a poppy which goes to support service men and women in need . I'm not sure if this goes back to after WW1 for the rehabilitation of the serving troops .
Holy crap I was there! When I was in middle school a group of us went to DC. Our tour guide was trying to avoid the giant crowd with the Prince and then we go to watch the changing of the guard. All the sudden a band comes out and the tour guide has this shocked look on her face and then Prince Harry shows up. After this she said we tried to avoid the crowd with him and instead got a special treat getting to see the Prince! One of my favorite memories of DC
They are our brothers. Spill blood on any field next to a man that trust you with his life. They become more of a brother than any siblings your mother pushed from her belly.
Harry's presence - much respect to His Royal Highness - gives a nod to the long and powerful bond the US and UK have shared. May our Republic and the United Kingdom be as brothers always, in peacetime and wartime.
Prince Harry truly shows the world of the obnoxious civilians what a soldier is. Someone who did his part and served in Afghanistan and shows great respect to our military and his.
I have not seen this much appreciation for the honor guard (who do this every day) ever, but someone who is a celebrity does this once and every one feels the need to show their respect and appreciation.
The point is to never know the name of the Unknown Soldier. He represents ALL soldiers, especially those who fell in the line of duty. I may not agree with a lot of the things the U.S. government is doing, but I sure has will respect the soldiers.

The spare is lucky he can do whatever he wants, not so the Heir. Harry would hate to be King he hates it all. William is just perfect. Unfortunately we will have Charles first.
The USA fought two wars against the British early in our history. The British also provided materiel support to the South during the Civil War but, ever since then, the British have been our most loyal ally in the world.
ShadowMoon the UK absolutely supported he South after the Trent Affair. They were very close to invading the north from Canada, positioning close to 20,000 troops on the border. Instead they went ahead imposed a naval blockade on the North after the North released the ambassadors (the Trent affair nearly caused France AND Britain to join the south. The North nearly were obliterated when they decided to board foreign ships and arrest ambassadors asked to come to France and Britain). I do not support any of the South’s intentions but please do not spread false facts.
Mingo La Flare One thing I do know is that the British parliament overwhelmingly voted in favour of the abolishment of slavery in 1807. The empire convinced many other European powers to follow suit such as Portugal, Netherlands, Germany, Spain etc.. And the Royal Navy dedicated a substantial amount of their power to the freeing of slaves. IMO, it’s hard for me to believe that the empire would ever ally with the confederacy. And if that was the case, then I’m certain the empire would’ve had an ulterior motive and a plan to stab the south in the back in order to continue their enforcement of freeing slaves.
Actually the French supplied arms to the southern states. But who cares that’s been years ago. UK has been our ally for a long time now. Time to let go.
I’m at this point in Harry’s book “Spare.” Really cool to see what he is talking about while listening (audiobook) to him talk about how he felt in this exact moment, especially during his single tap of the wreath. Respect 🇺🇸🇬🇧
Love the difference in how we salute. Only the British Navy salute in a different way (with the hand fully rotated at the wrist so the palm does not show - which would be an insult to the Monarch for reasons of tar covered hands many years ago).
dog guy - There are 3 distinct salutes to symbolise each branch of the British armed forces. 1) Royal Navy salute is the same as what all US military personal are custom to, (eyebrow with palm facing down). 2) British Army, (what Harry is). 3) Royal Air Force, (same as army but touching temple of head near the ear). I prefer the Navy salute which is what the US military uses :)
dog guy The Army and RAF are basically the same, just slightly different positioning and helps to identify out of dress. The reason why it's different for the Navy is because, when sailors used to tar the ship decks, they used white gloves to protect their hands. Because it was considered undignified to suddenly have to come to attention and salute with a dirty palm, the hand was turned 90 degrees with the palm facing the ground. The original salutes however, came from medieval knights lifting his visor to identify himself: "This is who I am and I'm not afraid".
dog guy the American military also used to do the open palm facing salute. they used it till at least the Mexican wars and possibly up to/ through the civil war.
The British Monarchy still has very close ties and respect for America. Remember, they were our leaders at the inception of this Country and the first American's were British citizens for over 100 years loyal to the Crown of Great Britain. Many citizens did not want to break away from the Crown and had it not been for the States representatives who voted to succeed from Britain, we very well may have been The United States of Britain. It was awesome that Harry showed this highest respect.

Now, if we could just get our fellow American tourists to treat the British guard regiments on post at Buckingham palace, the Tower, St. James palace, Windsor Castle, etc., etc., with more respect. They are men who have (or will) serve in combat zones like H.R.H. here. Tourists who don't bother to learn anything mistakenly think they are costumed employees of the Monarchy there simply to give the place color and atmosphere, sort of like a theme park.
100% agree as a Londoner I have seen some disgusting disrespectful capers carried out by tourists, some who when they arrive and get off the plane leave their brains on the seats and plant their heads very firmly up their backsides
So glad to see a royal family member of the nation that formed the US back in one of the former colonies. Greetings from the former UK Pennsylvania colony
Harry went from a wayward youth having no direction in life almost landing in jail to a combat veteran, soldier, father and the living breathing symbol of the union between two nations. The spare grew up into a fine man.,
The revolution was fought to protect the colonies right to be free Englishmen. The "tyranny" was added later... Here, you have the grandson of the queen, the brother, uncle and son of the future kings... laying a wreath at a memorial of a soldier to that very colony in the grounds of the house that used to be owned by the top general of the confederacy that tried to break it up. The Anglo Saxon world has a shared history and needs to protect its shared futures.
Who could have predicted his fall from grace. It’s it amazing what a liberal can do to an otherwise normal, respected human being in such a short amount of time.
Prince Harry would have never have been with Megan if his beautiful, strong and courageous mother was still here. Such a disgrace that witch of a wife he has has made him to be who he is now.
I wish it were mandatory to serve in the US Military before becoming president. You should have experience in their shoes before being able to be their commander and chief
It didn't turn out to well with George W. Bush, his father should have kicked him out of office cause he tried to use that to cover up for under the table dealings.

But now, I'd die for my brothers across the pond if we were to take up arms together again. I would defend good old Blighty if I had to, because I know they would defend us all the same.
