  • 10 things about living in rural japan, from my experience as an ALT on the Jet Program. I love rural Japan and it has so much beauty! But there are some more difficult things that come with living in the Japanese countryside, compared to a city. Of course, these things can be very different depending on the specific town in Japan, and this is just my experience.
10 things about rural Japan/Japanese countryside
    1. What kind of stores are there in rural Japan?
    2. What's it like to drive in Japan?
    3. Are there a lot of bugs?
    4. Are there a lot of foreign foods?
    5. Can I make friends with people my age?
    6. Fashion
    7. Do people speak English?
    8. Darkness
    9. You might stand out
    10. Watch the video to find out (this one's my favorite)
    About me
I'm logiebear. I was in the Jet Program, teaching English on an island in rural Japan from August 2018-2019. I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area. I love eating, traveling, and being creative. I'm still posting videos about my travels and life from my time in Japan.

I was an ALT in Toyotama in 2003-2004. I remember the people leaving their cars running while shopping. I always thought it was an island thing because if anyone stole a car, they wouldn't be able to take it off the island.

I liked your presentation, I was in Japan in 1964 at a place called MCAS Iwakuni, I really liked it, I didn't get to do a lot touring and I should have. And, I missed that especially now in my older years. I will continue to view your videos to see what I've missed.

Great video. I worked in Japan for a few years in the late 80's and also in the early 00's - but in the big city. Now I'm retired and living in South America - often in rural areas. I love the countryside and would love to live in the countryside in Japan but the language issue is big. Learning basic Spanish is a lot easier than Japanese of course... I'd love a video on your stories of getting by with basic Japanese in the countryside. If this Corona Virus thing goes away I want to come back to Japan in the Fall. Maybe I can resurrect my basic Japanese skills. My brain occasionally throws in random Japanese words when I'm speaking Spanish - so some of it still there...

Marsha Lyon, Don't be afraid to travel. There is a device that you can speak English to and it will translate it and speak the foreign language you need. I can't remember what its called- you could google it and Amazon probably sells it. Hope that puts your heart to rest; there's always a solution to a problem.

Hmm that's a good question! Besides maybe some Korean food options in restaurants, and seeing a lot of Korean tourists, I think Tsushima's culture is mostly similar to other rural places in Japan. It's interesting because I think most Japanese people in Tsushima haven't even been to Korea!

    I second Mitch!
And your facial expression always starts like 😒 or 😔 and then you 😁 while you talk in a overly sugary-sweet voice that seems like you are talking to kindergartners...for a few words, then lather, rinse, repeat. It's FAR too choppy, EXTREMELY distracting, and I feel like I'm being talked down to.
Also, based on some of the things in your list, I'm going to ASSUME that you have lived in San Francisco for your entire life minus your year in Japan. I SAY THIS BECAUSE...MANY of the things on your list are true of ANY rural area. (stores, bugs, restaurants, finding friends with someone in their late teens/early 20's, fashion, darkness, beauty).
IN FACT, the only thing specific to JAPAN (and a few random, select, other countries) would be driving on the opposite side of the car/road.
Traveling ANYWHERE where the language you are fluent in is not the primary language of the country is going to be challenging for ANYONE...and it's going to be EVEN MORE CHALLENGING if you visit an area without much tourism. (Like you said, you can sometimes get away with speaking English in Tokyo...because people who live in Tokyo have more EXPOSURE TO ENGLISH via tourists.)
And, whether you are the only/one of few minorities in an area, or, really, ANY new person (ESPECIALLY in a small town!), people ARE GOING TO NOTICE YOU!
I feel like you could teach people A LOT about your experiences in Japan...but nothing new was really shared in THIS video.
...And PLEASE, stop with all of the edits and jumps every 4 words!

Why does everyone think I'm being MEAN? Is it because some of my words were capitilized? That was merely for emphasis!
After watching a few of her videos and not commenting, I read some of the comments on this video, and I saw one I agreed with. So I commented on that topic (about the edits) and then elaborated on it ...and then I added my own comment about this PARTICULAR video.
I grew up in a small town. The majority of what she said in this video is true for ANY small town. I watched this video with the intention of learning about Japan, and her experiences there, but I didn't. In fact the ONLY THING that I learned from this video was that people drive on the right side of a car/left side of the road.
HEAVEN FORBID I use the COMMENT SECTION for what it's INTENDED FOR.... COMMENTING. (WOW...what a BITCH I am!!! 🙄)
