Why Turkey's 1000-Year-Old Handwoven Carpet Industry Is Struggling
I sadly don’t think that’s only Covid that makes this industry struggle. It’s also the lack of appreciation of a generation raised with the “buy cheap-throw away-buy new one” mentality. What most people don’t know is the fact that some of these handwoven rugs are handed down from generation to generation and can survive hundreds of years. Please don’t even compare it to industrially made, cheap store carpets, it’s an insult to the century-long tradition of carpet-making.
@Musterror I am thinking the same too.And I will never let my future generations to sell it
You mean the generation with trillions of dollars of student debt who can't find a job above minimum wage? 🤔 Wonder why industries of expensive, unnecessary decor are struggling...
Fast fashion vs slow fashion. It's about lifestyle.
Young people moves a lot, so the tendency is fast fashion, while older (30+) start to settle and buy things with better quality.
Agree
Not that the people making these carpets don't deserve adequate wages for their work but it is ridiculously expensive for the average person of this generation to buy these things when there's a lack of jobs, a need for higher education, lower wages, student debt, inadequate Healthcare and a dying planet I don't think keeping up an international rug industry is this generations priority
These woman are literally artists have you guys seen all the crazy designs they can do its just amazing

Wtf your meant to be barefoot on these things.
Why it's just a rug
10000$ for a rug, what a waste of money.
@@vincentfox4929 lmao
An entire year to make the rug, & they only get UP TO $4,000??? It should be at least 20 grand or more...what amazing work to be given so cheaply. If I had the money, I'd buy one right now. Beautiful artwork! Obviously, a product is only worth what people are willing to pay for it. I'm just saying it's a shame all those hours of work (a YEAR to make!) don't equal a fair profit.
$4,000 USD in Turkey ain’t bad money that’s nearly 30,000 lira.
@@big_dad9465 I assumed they had adjusted for the difference in value between Turkish currency, & US currency.
You can put whatever price tag you want, doesn't mean people would magically want to buy it
@@roxylius7550 Ummm, duh...😒😒😒
Turkey is in the middle of a currency crisis where lira lost value against American dollar. 1 USD was 1.2 Turkish lira when I was in high school. For today it’s 8.5 Turkish liras.
I feel like even $4000 is cheap for a handmade rug that takes months to make.
Cheaper in Afghanistan!

Most beautiful country with the nicest people and the most delicious food. I was fortunate to visit turkey and I will always go there. These are the qualities found every Muslim country and our visitors are mostly from Europe.
Now try living there for a month on minimum wage
@Musterror It's true though...
I would expect most would be from Europe since Turkey is a part of Europe.
I’m Turkish and uhm even Muslims don’t want to live in Muslim countries.
We don’t label ourselves as a Muslim country. Secular and Turkish.
Okay so based on the comments i just want to add something, ofcourse you can go buy a carpet for 5 -10 dollars and ofcourse the usage of them is same but the difference here is pleasure, for certain people life is about pleasure like you can grab a coffee from starbucks for 3 dollars but it gave them much more pleasure to brew the coffee to go out of their way to experience new tastes, or food you can order a burger for 3 dollars but some people travel the world just to taste certain foods or even music and collecting vinals its about having a vision , tasting -feeling the culture its about enjoying the meaning, as a turkish person this carpet means much more than a decoration to me personally, it is much more valuable than 10 k, at the end of the day you are the one that shapes the meaning of worth and for the people out there who appreciate tradition , hard work , culture different types of beauties this is honestly a jem. So it could be so hard to understand that a carpet could coast more than 10 k but for the people who breath culture for all their lives and who has a hunger for pleasure which comes through life these carpets are honestly much more valuable than green papers.
this this this, best answer ever
Wish I could visit Turkey someday, and feel the history of the great Ottoman Empire.
For me its more tha fact that a machine can do it even better for much much less money so why would you give so much money for something that is worse.
Thanks! 👏🏼 people do not understand that our own cultural rugs are meaningful for us than a normal rug. It is also very trendy now a days. People are not questioned if someone buys million dollar cars but are questioning 10k rugs. They need to learn that we are proud of our cultural gifts, and even if it’s expensive we know its worth.
However these rugs are looked down on in many Turkish places because it is “old” or not “modern enough” which is a total lie. These rugs can be very modern fitting if you know how to style your house. Small Turkish handmade rugs can be very modern to have around with antique furnitures. If you don’t know it’s worth, you wouldn’t find it suiting too.
@@krselj who decides which is worse? and besides like I said it is much more meaningful than a simple decoration but as far as quality goes these carpets lasts for multiple generations and generations so as far as taste goes I cannot comment on that, everyone has a different taste but as far as quality goes these carpets are priceless and they proved their quality over and over again for multiple decades.
I love that they don’t aim for perfection ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yeah, leave the perfection for cheap factory machine made carpet
@Musterror lol, I can tell by your comment that you are pretentious hippie with zero grasp of reality
@@roxylius7550 Yes those perfect Machine made carpets just don’t have that charm of perfections . You will find a same carpet in at least 6 houses in your neighborhood 🙄
@@SamsArtStudio95 sureeee, you are definately able to tell which one si factory made and which one is handmade. Totally, believe you bro. How did you detect this "charm of perfection" again? Did you sniff for the smell of 1 year worth of sweat?

These women are true artists keeping alive a craft that has been passed down for generations. I just returned from a tour of Turkey, and was fortunate enough to see these artisans in action….even had a chance to tie a knot or two. I learned that Turkish rugs differ from others in that they use a double knot rather than a single. It was a priceless experience. I was so fortunate to be able to purchase one of these gorgeous works of art. 💕

1000 years for a country stablished less than 100 years ago!?!
The republic is less than a century but the Turkish culture is more than 1000 years. You can see different Turkish regions around the world. :)
@@alarak7105 dude! What are you talking about?!? Turk seljuks were less than 1000 years moved from southwest of Mongolia (northwest of china) and central Asia and attacked Anatolia. There wasn’t even1 Turk in the region 1000 years ago. All were Hittites, Palaic, Lydians, Circassians, Romans, Persians, Georgians, Armenians, Kurds, Balkans, Bulgars and ... if you speak Turkish, does it mean you are a turk?! Are people in Turkey even a tiny bit similar to Turk Uyghurs?!? More than half of the Africa speak English and French, it means they are from England and France?! 😂😂😂 dude! When Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan (Great Persia) made carpets Turks were far far aways from civilizations in middle east. You know that still the most expensive carpet in the world is Persian carpet. Don’t make yourself a fool. Even Ataturk with blue eyes and light brownish hair was everything but a Turk. cheers! 👋🏻
Thank you for teaching my history. I meant those nations lived together and the culture was born. Also Bulgarians, Armenians, Kurds, Cherkess and all the ethnicities still live in Turkey and we call ourselves Turks overall. I didn’t assert that culture is %100 Uyghur Turkish but I see (as most of us) these ethnicities as Turkish too. I like the diversity comes within multicultural area. Have a good day :).
@@alarak7105 you’re welcome. You can call other ethnicities as Americans or Norwegians, but the reality is not changed. If you call a Greek, a Kurd, an Armenian, a Balkan, a Circassian, a Persian, a Hittite as Turk, it’s exactly like calling Japanese people, Saudis! Doesn’t make sense unless you want to assimilate people to misuse them for reaching out your purpose, or you are a fool! Once a person with blue eye and light brown hair and white skin or hairy light brown skin color with thick mustache can become a person with yellow glabrous skin with oriental eye, then you can call Anatolians Turks, and Turks Anatolians! 😉 just naming something wrong doesn’t change the reality. The interesting part is that when an Uyghur talks to a person from Turkey, the only language they can communicate is English! 😃 have been witness several time here in Detroit and also Wyne state university. Maybe you guys can make it by faking it, but enlightening never stops. 🙂🤗 you have a good day as well.
@@alarak7105 ‘turkish culture’ hahahaga
I’ve had the privilege to watch a rug being made in a small town. Truly art of the highest form IMO
National memory is the most important thing of these carpets. More than 4000 years we were making kilims and if you look at the shapes on a kilim you can see a lot of shapes with sharp corners just like kokturk alphabet which is our first and original alphanet. And today still in modern Turkey you can see the kokturk/central asian/turanic motives on carpets and more. This is so important for us. When i get rich one day i will decorate my floors with these.
Beautiful!
Thank you so much for giving an insight as to how rugs ate made.

B.I.: “Why Turkey’s carpet industry is struggling?”
Answer: Covid-19
Me: Just like every business in the whole world.
Idk if it’s only that. A lot of ppl would rather just buy factory made rugs from Walmart for $150 than spend $4k on a handmade one
No it’s not about pandemic mosty because of Economic crysis in Turkey
Wow great work
This such a beautiful form of art if I ever had that kind of money in the future I would definitely invest in one
I love everything hand made
I love turquoise carpet colors 🤩
Great work 💓
Let me guess, machines making them cheaper?
Yep! Machine made as they would call it runs for a an eighth of what a $4K
Yes but they are no where near the same quality that one will last you a year and handmade one goes good for at least a 100
That’s one of the reasons. You can buy a carpet from Walmart for only $150
Actually these carpets shouldn't compare mass product's carpet. You have just watched knitting and selling part. Before the knitting these carpet's wood was being turned to ropes and these ropes was colored with natural dyes. Therefore, these carpets can't produce with machines.
Its just that the new generation can't spare that amount of money on furniture.

Turkey is not 1000 years old, so can’t have 1000 year old tradition.
Turkish people could have adopted it from a different culture. Also Turks live there much longer than turkey exists. It's like saying vikings aren't norwegian, because back then there was no norway.

Every rug has a flaw -- Native Americans and Tibetans also have this philosophy - something to think about -- so reverent and poetic!
We Turks are related to them especially to native americans. ❤
Open the industry and teach people of developing country this skill and they will be able to make carpets and they will earn too
Truly amazing. I think Turkish politics has something to do with tourists though.
Its a dying tradition due to technology and mass production also how this tradition is carried over to the next gen when most of the new gen go to university rather continuing their family traditions of pottery or carpet weaving.
Nothing to do with Turkish politics or tourists.
