What I like about Globe Trotter Alpha videos is that there is no music, and no narrating from the camera man. Instead you hear the sounds of the place and the camera moves at waking pace, smoothly. Man lots of people are asking questions. I've lived in Calgary for my whole life, I'll try to answer them. Calgary has a mild climate, but it usually doesn't get below -30C or above +30C. It is the fastest growing city in Canada and it's pretty easy to find a job. And for a 1,200,000 pop city, it doesn't have much crime. There is only about 60 assaults each year. (Detroit has over 400) My cousin from Kelowna came to Calgary and complained about the air quality, as most of you might unless you've lived in a big city before. But after a few months you'll get used to it. And it's not like it's the worst air quality either. Calgary is an artistic city with lots of art and art museums all around, and truly you will never get bored here. Being so close to the mountains and having anything you want, groceries, stores, food, gas, anything really just minutes away, Calgary is in one of the best positions on earth. And if you really want to see all Calgary can be, go during stampede week, the first half of July. The greatest outdoor show on earth not only doubles the people in the city, but brings in $400,000,000 each year. It is a spectacular 10 days of all things Canadian/Calgarian/Western. Calgary truly is a great place to live. And nothing against other cities, but it's the only place I would ever want to live.
Meikkhaell I live in Calgary and I can agree with every point you made. Everything said here is true but I think sometimes if Calgary is feeling special in the summer it can get up to 40C
Canadian cities are built for conducting business and are a good place to start a family. Lived there for more than 20 years. The problem is that everything that could be construed as 'fun' are officially frowned upon and even discouraged with bylaws, fines, and fees. It's a place also that seems designed for introverts in that random socializing with strangers just doesn't really happen leading to a fair amount of social isolation. If you're a fun loving extrovert, Canada won't appeal to you. If an introvert who loves nature and just wants to settle down with a family, it's a fairly good place.
not forbidden, regulated out of existence. Or fee'd into unprofitability. NIMBYs are rife in canuckistan and their concerns taken seriously by the powers that be (which regard any deviance from accepted practice as an opportunity to generate some juicy fee revenue for the town/city). Other places I've lived in are more free-wheeling and easy going, that's all. Not a critique, really; some people love to live in law and order environments but I'm not one of them.
@D dicin Might depend on the age of the Canadian and his type of fun. We have Canadians from Winnipeg drive down to Grand Forks, ND and Fargo ND to dine, shop, and socialize all the time on weekends. Our Hotels and restaurants and drinking establishments would rate Canadians high on the party scale. Ha. But that could be a reflection of our cheap beer and liquor. Maybe Canada should reduce taxes on Beer, liquor and even milk. Then Canadians could have a little fun at home for less. My Wish. Our Costco's are filled with Canadian license plates buying milk and other lower priced goods. I guess they are smart. Cheers !
That was awesome! I especially liked the urban "subway". I've ridden the subways I'm from NYC, and I have rode the rails but never have I seen anything like this. I would vacation in Calgary just for that particular experience. Everything was so beautiful. Watching this was almost like being there. Everything was so vivid. Bucket list definitely. Goodnight.

True. By the time someone's in their forties they start looking for an exit plan. Winter is hard to endure and life's short, so why bother with it. Only desperate people move to northern climes. I mean, the population of Finland is 5 million, Norway 5 and Sweden only has 10 million; people don't like the lack of sunshine and the cold weather of the north.

what a fantastic video. went to Winnipeg last year for 7 weeks and thought that place was good. Calgary looks even better!!!! Canada is live heaven. wonderful place with great people!!!
This is from 2012, Calgary has got a lot better in terms of vibrancy downtown/beltline along with more beautiful buildings...Would like to see a reshooot of this in 2020 that too in the summer not fall when everyones actually outside!
Reading some of the comments, I figure that Calgary appeals to people who are tired of living in a chaotic environment and seek predictability in a place with little drama. That you will definitely find there, but be careful what you wish for.
Calgary it's a beautiful city it's the same as any other city our people are polite hold doors say excuse me sorry friendly and like any other city we have good and evil such a lovely city . I'm not CalgaRian born but it's a city that had adopted me and had though me many thing I love you Calgary
There's your typical sheep-fucking specimen of a calgarian, ladies and gentlemen. Canadians are all backward hicks. Glad I left that place for the wonderful place filled with beautiful beaches and even more beautiful people. Enjoy your grey shitty cities, canoodlers.
The way the video was captured made me feel right there in Calgary, walking. Thank you for sharing. It's a nice, neat, metropolis and certainly one i would love to make home one day
Calgary is not cold all the time, Only from November to March. We also get chinooks all the time in winter, which changes the the climate to unseasonably warm temperatures. Also we get a lot of sun all year round and is one of the cleanest city's in the world. Nice shots but where is Forest Lawn?
@SilvaStateoficcial Shish ! Don't tell people you get the warm chinook wind. They will want to live there and throw trash around and foul the river. That is what happens. Your smaller towns and city buildings look like "quaint English Colonial buildings". Very beautiful. But, I expected your squirrels to be better trained than ours, you know "British proper and reserved", but your squirrels steal the bird seed just like our wild ones. The RCMP should look into that. We don't get the chinook winds in Fargo ND. I am jealous. Cheers ! Hope to visit someday !
I was born in Calgary, moved to the Okanogan when I was 2, when I was 17 old enough to be on my own Calgary was my first choice and the fact I was born here. This city has be good to me. Love Calgary, great perspective. You should do a updated 2020 video with all the new structures since 2012. Thank you.
love the squirrel at 3:42. We have no squirrels. It looks a gorgeous livable city. As an Aussie I might struggle with winter but I'd love to do a year there.
You should do another one, in summer. And try to do like New Brighton or Copperfield and Mohogany or Cranston or Auburn Bay. Personally I love Copperfield.
Hello, I really enjoyed your video. If you don't mind, I would like to ask how you are able to film while walking but still keep the camera so steady? Do you have your camera hooked onto something, like a bike? Regards, Richard.
Richard Parkin I am unsure as to how specifically this person has done theirs, but usually it is a stedicam camera stabilizing system. www.steadicam.com/ are some examples of these.
Richard Parkin The creator of this video describes the tools he used in the description of the video. He kept it smooth using a Glidecam HD-4000 with the Smooth Shooter Body Mount
not doubt is a beautiful city, more important is the safety that exist here, the portunities , being a city not that big but rated as one of the best cities in the world
i enjoyed watching this video. I have never been to Calgary but i can tell from your video that its a big beautiful and exciting city to live in or visit. You did an extraordinary job capturing the essence of this city. This has been one of the best scenery videos of a city i have ever seen on UA-cam and I've seen all lot of them. Great job!!!!
Aerials would be great but it would be difficult to get good natural sounds, unless by natural sounds you want to listen to the wind blowing. Plus, getting permission to fly drones in the city is hard. The other day I've heard of a person being arrested in Paris for flying a drone equipped with a camera on it. He spent a few days in jail and was fined as well.
jeepcj7dude Agreed.. Living in Calgary for past 12 years and can vouch that its no better then Siberia when it comes to winters. Just 2 months of summers.
@@jojo-xk8ri lol yeah like i said i spent 10 years there....... I hope i never have too again. Unless it is a layover at the airport to go somewhere nice.
***** I visited Toronto for a couple of days in summer- it is a must-visit place for touring. I live here in Calgary for almost three years..and basing on my friends' experience, I believe Calgary is a better place to live due to better career opportunities. I have couple of friends who transferred here from Toronto. Absolutely, come travel and perhaps consider staying in Calgary =)
Mino Duska Photography Calgary and Edmonton is on my list along with Vancouver. I might want to travel the western Canada, looks more beautiful. Toronto is like New York or something but I wouldn't mind visiting it but living it, I would choose Alberta.
Mino Duska Photography yes but Canada i very big, a flight from Toronto to Calgary is like 4 hours. If I went to Toronto first, then I have to take another flight couple days after for Calgary or I shall just come Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver instead of Toronto. but either way, I should still see Toronto.
Is it worth living in Calgary? I live in Toronto recently and I was thinking about moving out of this city once I finish university. Is it easy to get jobs there? Please let me know about this city. Thanks
Harjot Minhas I graduated from University of Toronto in Economics. As you can imagine, I did not find anything in Toronto. Its been 3 weeks I moved here. So far no call. But I am hopeful. Since, you are in a very specialized field, I think it takes time, but it is definitely easier than Toronto. Toronto is saturated with educated people. The number of jobs in Calgary-Edmonton Area combined are less, but the chances are higher. I have seen my friends living here. If you cant find anything in Toronto, I would suggest you to move to Edmonton, cause I see most people like me are coming to Calgary rather than Edmonton.
adad Thanks for your answer Adad... I am currently attending York University and have decided to move from Toronto when I graduate. The only city that has caught my attention is Calgary. I will also give Edmonton a look. I just have one more questions for you. Are there any "law" types of jobs available in Alberta? Lot of people have told me that it is better to become a lawyer in Toronto. Would you recommend working in Alberta? Thanks again for your amazing answer!!
Maybe people who haven’t lived in different parts of the world don’t know what boring really is this place seems peaceful people are on the streets walking jogging it’s there pets every one seems happy a lot of stores an restaurants I think it’s perfect and plan one day soon to move with my family and live there.
Calgary...could have been a much better place if the weather isn't so horrendous. Its like 8 to 9 months of winter with months of snowstorm. Extreme snow ruins the beauty of the downtown
toyobaru no, ever heard of alberta being cold af? BC is the only province that inst painfully cold and even then its not as great as anything they have in America
lol no!. trees couldn't exist grass wouldn't grow and we would starve. no area on the globe has that much snow and cold except the areas where there is little to no life. Calgary has generally 5 months of cold weather which is broken up with Chinooks the springs can be mild with some snowfall but that is short lived. summers can be hot but are pleasant and the fall is awe inspiring with some snow.
World class equestrian centre and zoo, indoor mountain bike park, huge excellent park system and bike paths, many excellent golf courses, COP with luge, zipline, and luge carts. biggest amusement park in western canada, excellent malls for colder days, biggest +15 system in the world, huge indoor gardens downtown, Bow river with high class rapids, less than an hour from the mountains, etc. etc. etc. Calgary is not the boring part...
There are 4 major malls, Cross Iron, Market Mall, South Centre, and Chinook Mall. They are all modern and beautiful. Cross Iron is more of a discount 'outlet' mall, the others are more for more expensive goods. Then there is the Core downtown, with a lot of high end shopping, and an indoor garden that is amazing. It all depends on what you are looking for. Then there is Banff, about an hour away, with world class scenery, and it's own unique shops. You won't be disappointed.
You are welcome. If you want to go crazy shopping, a 3 hour drive north to Edmonton, there is West Edmonton Mall, one of the largest in north america. Also has amusement park, enormous pool, seals, bowling, theatre etc. Quite the experience. Welcome to Canada!
MONERISplayzTM : NOT if you do sports. Can be quite isolating if one is not into sports. Not keen on the yearly “Stampede” culture. City has bad quality air especially just after winter. Way toooo cold and dangerous for the elderly. Walking on ice is no fun. I like Calgary in the 80’s - 90’s; then, it became a city of work, work, work: professional then domestic. But not a bad place for career-minded ppl.
I lived in Toronto for 3 years and I am here in Calgary for 2 years. You can't compare both cities. During the LONG cold winter months and has nothing to do at all except you are working or in school this city is completely boring unlike Toronto. It's Dec.25, 2017 now and as you can see the city is like dead, the transport system especially on weekends are far apart you froze to death if you are out of nowhere streets with or without sheds.
statistically calgary is better than both of them, reason why its the fastest growing city even after a recession. Wages are crazy high, cost of living is less, younger crowd low taxes, educated immigrants unlike Toronto/Vancouver. Only thing it suffers is cold winter days and low density so especially in winter the city can feel quite boring. The later problem is being cured as we speak over the next few decades as the city densifies.
Calgary society is lacking in communication. Nothing but the work. A good job is not easy to find and like any where else in Canada for a good paid job you need connections. Def you gonna find a decent job here more than anywhere else in a shorter period of time, What most of people do is they come to Calgary for 3-5 years and they move somewhere nicer. If you are coming from a village or a small place you gonna love this city. But if you are coming from a big city and urban lifestyle then you wont like it here at all.
I spent this summer (2017) in Calgary as I was on my trip from work. I lived in a downtown 7th avenue 11th st. (There are 2 green towers, one of them is taller than the other one, if anybody lives there.) I was looking my building here but unfortunately I couldn't see it. Downtown is a good place in terms of offices and the global buildings. If you want fun then you should probably walk to 17th avenue. It's full of bars and nightclubs. This year there was a stempade parade and they had extremely high number of parties. I had so much fun and really enjoyed the city. Great experience, I miss it.. Cheers from Toronto
If you want to know a little bet of the real truth living in Canada then UA-cam for: POOR NO MORE. Documentary feat. Mary Walsh; published by: Poor No more on Dec. 12, 2013. It will open your eyes about what Canada really is about.
Really Lady!? You have to grind your little social axe here? Think about it, no matter how shitty someone's life is in Canada, it's probably 1000 times better than the lives of some of the reader of these comments. In Canada, if you fall and break your leg, you can have it fixed no charge. In most other countries, you'd better find yourself a stick. In Canada, if you're down and out, there's a social safety net to catch you, in the U.S. and most other countries, you'd be living in a cardboard box on the street. Yeah, some people fall through the cracks, but there's yet to be a perfect system developed anywhere, and until there is, Canada is still the best place in the world to raise a family.
Nurit L Doesn't pay the rent!!?? Imagine the cost of paying the rent for hundreds of thousands of deadbeats who decide working is for saps, especially if the government is going to pay to put a roof over their head. Only a demented socialist would even consider the idea.
Nurit L While Canada's social safety net is not as benevolent as some European countries, it does cover the most essential components, such as health care, employment insurance, reasonable pensions, etc. Canada does this without having "insane taxes", the rates of personal income tax being generally in line with those of similar countries, such as Australia.
Nurit L Yes, I've been unemployed, and when I was, I didn't sit on my ass crying about it, I started a company. That company ended up growing to $110,000.00 per month, before I transformed it into an even larger company that did $6 million per year. At 15% you must be talking about the GST in Quebec.. Most countries have a similar system, and if you'd been further than Toronto, you'd know that. When I arrived in Australia, I found their total VAT was 24%.. The UK VAT rate is 20%, France is the same, because the EU sets the VAT rate for the whole of the Union. So suck it up Sweetheart, quit bitch'n and enjoy your life in what's probably the best country in the world.
Good thing is there is no background music, so one can enjoy the real life sounds.

Reading some of the comments, I figure that Calgary appeals to people who are tired of living in a chaotic environment and seek predictability in a place with little drama. That you will definitely find there, but be careful what you wish for.
Calgary it's a beautiful city

There's your typical sheep-fucking specimen of a calgarian, ladies and gentlemen.
Canadians are all backward hicks. Glad I left that place for the wonderful place filled with beautiful beaches and even more beautiful people. Enjoy your grey shitty cities, canoodlers.
D dicin Yes true.

I'm looking for a good place to live in Canada and just loved Calgary after watching this :)
Calgary is not cold all the time, Only from November to March. We also get chinooks all the time in winter, which changes the the climate to unseasonably warm temperatures. Also we get a lot of sun all year round and is one of the cleanest city's in the world. Nice shots but where is Forest Lawn?
They moved it.
Forest Lawn is were the not so wealthy live, but still a nice place.
November to April*
SilvaStateofficial Ya no that’s a lie this year in 2018 the snow left in April and started in October
Missing Calgary a lot. I lived there for 9 years and moved to Ontario February 2016.

greetings from constantine city, algeria
I can't wait to move to Calgary, it looks so peaceful. Vancouver has become a nightmare.
Victoria O. I'm living in Calgar now , it's boring and it doesn't have many job opportunities. It's a very quiet city too
MARIA TINA And who are you to become a downer? Its great here and there's enough hate comments saying that it's boring here.

Another 1970 memory when I walked those streets. :)
This walking tour around Calgary honestly pleased me, you need to hit way more cities :)
I was born in Calgary, moved to the Okanogan when I was 2, when I was 17 old enough to be on my own Calgary was my first choice and the fact I was born here. This city has be good to me. Love Calgary, great perspective. You should do a updated 2020 video with all the new structures since 2012. Thank you.
I love Canada :) Thanks for this upload.

love the squirrel at 3:42. We have no squirrels. It looks a gorgeous livable city. As an Aussie I might struggle with winter but I'd love to do a year there.
I'm from Calgary, we like Aussies. Southern Alberta is alot like Australia
You should do another one, in summer. And try to do like New Brighton or Copperfield and Mohogany or Cranston or Auburn Bay. Personally I love Copperfield.
OH MY GOD I can't believe I just saw that..what a beautiful city!
calgary
Nicholas Da Silva Powell Thanks for the information.
Travis E Cross Thanks, Travis.
not doubt is a beautiful city, more important is the safety that exist here, the portunities , being a city not that big but rated as one of the best cities in the world
may be you just want to say something, perhaps for some reason you did not succedded , that is another issue, you can see the world according to yours

See you there...
Truly a livable city... I do like it!

i enjoyed watching this video.
What strikes me about Canada is how many trucks and 4x4's there are.
One day I will be in Canda, it's my dream to live and work there...
Canada is a quiet town.
Canada is a country.
quite if it is winter time because nobody wants to go out because its too cold

Nice video, congrats ! Have you think make aerial movies?
Aerials would be great but it would be difficult to get good natural sounds, unless by natural sounds you want to listen to the wind blowing.
Plus, getting permission to fly drones in the city is hard. The other day I've heard of a person being arrested in Paris for flying a drone equipped with a camera on it. He spent a few days in jail and was fined as well.
thank god for people like you who put up God videos like this one
During the one week of summer..............
Never going back there!!!
This was in October
IT IS SNOWING THERE RIGHT NOW. Look at the news and travel more. I lived there for 10 shitty years.....
jeepcj7dude
Agreed.. Living in Calgary for past 12 years and can vouch that its no better then Siberia when it comes to winters. Just 2 months of summers.
@@jeepcj7dude it snows from November to April here. In October it can be quite hot, and right now, even during November, I'm barely seeing any snow.
@@jojo-xk8ri lol yeah like i said i spent 10 years there....... I hope i never have too again. Unless it is a layover at the airport to go somewhere nice.
Beautiful place with beautiful people.. proud to be Calgarian =)
Mino Duska Photography Is Calgary better place to live than Toronto ? im hoping to travel one day and want to see Alberta first
***** I visited Toronto for a couple of days in summer- it is a must-visit place for touring.
***** Yes, give a try to the different cities.. you are most welcome to stay here in Calgary =D
Thanks
It's pretty good in here. There are plenty of jobs (and I mean plenty) if you know where to look.
I am currently attending university here in Toronto and hoping to become a lawyer. I was wondering if there are jobs for lawyers
Ah, I don't know. I would do a Google search for that, it knows more than me. Good luck!
Keep in mind this was also in the middle of autumn when it starts getting cold. The springs and summers are very lively
i like it so beauty
I used to live in Calgary, loved dining at the revolving restaurant!
i can't stop watch this pure awesomeness
Calgary...could have been a much better place if the weather isn't so horrendous. Its like 8 to 9 months of winter with months of snowstorm. Extreme snow ruins the beauty of the downtown
Ya ok Rachel
+Rachel Kim ?? It's 4-5 months of winter not 8.
+Trent Hogan its closer to 6-7 but feels like 11
toyobaru no, ever heard of alberta being cold af? BC is the only province that inst painfully cold and even then its not as great as anything they have in America
lol no!. trees couldn't exist grass wouldn't grow and we would starve. no area on the globe has that much snow and cold except the areas where there is little to no life. Calgary has generally 5 months of cold weather which is broken up with Chinooks the springs can be mild with some snowfall but that is short lived. summers can be hot but are pleasant and the fall is awe inspiring with some snow.
Such a great video. Thank you. Truly, Calgary is a place to be:)))
The city looks empty and not crowded
+Adnan Bendris1080p About 1.1 million people in the city proper.
Adnan Bendris1080p the city is so quiet all the time lol I'm in Calgary now.. I'm planning to move to other Canadian city
Adnan Bendris1080p There's more people then that.
It's not that Calgary is not populated. The problem is that Calgary is too spread out making it seem as if Calgary has less population.
This was made in October. During Fall barely anyone goes outside. Come here during summer and its busy as heck
One of the best videos I ever saw.
calgary is a beautiful place but it gets boring
true
World class equestrian centre and zoo, indoor mountain bike park, huge excellent park system and bike paths, many excellent golf courses, COP with luge, zipline, and luge carts. biggest amusement park in western canada, excellent malls for colder days, biggest +15 system in the world, huge indoor gardens downtown, Bow river with high class rapids, less than an hour from the mountains, etc. etc. etc. Calgary is not the boring part...
There are 4 major malls, Cross Iron, Market Mall, South Centre, and Chinook Mall. They are all modern and beautiful. Cross Iron is more of a discount 'outlet'
mall, the others are more for more expensive goods. Then there is the Core downtown, with a lot of high end shopping, and an indoor garden that is amazing. It
all depends on what you are looking for.
This video is wonderful, thanks for not focusing on tourist traps like all the other tour videos!
Calgary is 18 times better than Toronto an 500 times better than Montreal.
How so?
Lanny Rafa and what about edmonton
sobantuy oh no can u tell some cities to visit near edmonton
Nice video, will be visiting next year for the stampede.....just whetting my appetite
That's where I live
The Super Cat Sorry to hear that!
Darcy Jovic Why? Lol.
Joel Cuba Because he has a hate for Calgary.
+Darcy Jovic why u hate Calgary so much 😂
Best city in Canada. No doubt about it.
One of the best on Earth
Calgary society is lacking in communication. Nothing but the work. A good job is not easy to find and like any where else in Canada for a good paid job you need connections. Def you gonna find a decent job here more than anywhere else in a shorter period of time, What most of people do is they come to Calgary for 3-5 years and they move somewhere nicer. If you are coming from a village or a small place you gonna love this city. But if you are coming from a big city and urban lifestyle then you wont like it here at all.
90% incorrect
TheKriss63 Can you imagine how much time you have wasted? :P
calgary is better than america cuz there is not alot of crime going on
+crystalminer Yes, but America has better climate and decent beaches.
I live in Calgary and its cool cause I have been to a lot of these places
European > North American - Cities
1MuchButteR1 go first deal with those illegal immigrants..
They are making Europe a pure shot hold..
Not at all! Canadian cities have virtually nothing in common with Europe, except the cold weather in winter
The maps i seen when i was younger lied to me. I thought canada was a desert.
idiot
+MSI Gamer xD sorry
i was a kid. xD they shouldnt make it the color of a desert if its not one.
+Yukiteru Amano It is a desert for 6-7 months. Except for sand theres snow.
"We love Calgary so mucho..."
Beautiful city but sparsely populated
+FaDeNitroz Metro Calgary is over 1 million and is one of the fastest growing cities in all of North America.
+Trent Hogan Correct. I'm not sure what the original commenter meant.
muy bonito pais, hace muchisimo frio, pero valdria la pena poder vivir en calgary canada, saludos desde mexico
In the summer in Calgary, it warms up to 32C some days. Between April and October, the average is 20C
@@MrMASSEYJONES 37°C yesterday and tomorrow 😅
Yeah, some people fall through the cracks, but there's yet to be a perfect system developed anywhere, and until there is, Canada is still the best place in the world to raise a family.
violetta maliszewska thanks. great video.
What a lovely journey through my home.
Moved from UK to Canada, unfortunately i find you lot Candians bit weird!Backward too & little bit of racist stuff going on here..
lol you'll break canadians hearts, they still highly look up to you "anglo saxons" they still think you hate the french and the natives like them.
@@TheWho58 , he said he's from UK. He didn't say he's white anglo-saxon. I guess these days there are more non-whites in UK than whites.
Well I mean, it's a different country. Of course things are going to be weird and unfamiliar
