- Today's tutorial I discuss how to patch your ISO file so it becomes a self booting game for your PS2 console that is compatible with FreeDVDBoot.
This assumes your PS2 can run FreeDVDBoot already. If not, then your mileage may vary so don't be surprised if your burnt backup is not working.
If your PS2 is compatible, then your self booting disc games should work and your era of good times has just begun. Enjoy!

The Payload you used is only for Slim PS2's if you have a Phat PS2 you need to check out the other Payloads , They are still working on them so please be patient , You need to find out what DVD player version your PS2 has to choose the right Payload.
did you find a list of payloads that worked for instance phat ps2 39001 2.12?
The ESR patch works if I keep my ISO files and use on USB, but when I burn the same ISO file to DVD it does not load "DVD player not set up" error.

Yeah this would be massive. Litterally your only option for playing PS1 backups on the PS2 is to install a mod chip and burn discs. I know popstarter exists, but it's emulation and it's compatability is rather poor. Blows my mind that there's been no way to play games straight off a HDD or disc using the PS2's dedicated PS1 hardware.

@@hx8457 Popstarter supports booting PS1 CDs and PS2 CDs through swap trick using uLaunchELF, but compatibility is even worse (and DVDs are not supported yet)

Someone else inquired about PS1 self-bootable discs, I'd love to have that as an option as well, especially since I would love to see GT2 Plus running on a non-modded console.
Of course, the main thing I seek is to finally play around with RPG Tsukuru 5. Finding said game is nigh impossible.

hello, I am French, I have a PS2 pal for the DVDfreeboot esr patcher flaw to work I have to put my console in English otherwise I have a black screen, if I put the games in French in English changes in the text and the audio what a shame! I searched there is no other solution

If you know how to mod your ps3 and install ps2 games properly to a cfw ps3, then yes.
If you use it on CD-ROM based game just convert it into DVD format
I tried the freedvdboot patch method with a bunch of backups, but for some reason some worked and some didn't.

Btw how do I fix this I copied the fortuna files on to my memory card and when I try to open my memory card my ps2 crashes or freeze does that have something to do with the modchip on my ps2?

How do you know if your console is compatible with free dvd boot? Mines is a silver ps2 slim 7000 series. I have been using FreeMcboot on it and found that I can't play parrappa the rapper 2 with esr (other games work). So I look to use this method.
Your 7k should work, check github for latest compatible models.
Which method would you say is better, this one or regular ESR patcher with freemcboot? Also, does this stress or damage your ps2 laser in any way? I read something about that.
I can't speak for laser stress as I have moved onto digital when I can, i.e. smb network play. I don't know if ESR versus self boot is same stress on laser, or if one method is more stressful than the other, sorry.

I have FreeMCBoot v1.966 (latest) installed and I also installed MechaPwn 3.0 after in order to play ps1 backups + unlock the ps2's region (so i can play original pal or Japanese ps1 and ps2 games (force unlock disabled).
My question is, is your ps2 games who have intro videos/trailers and are patched with FreeDVDBoot ESR Patcher GUI suffer video lags/skipping ?
Once in the game/main menu, everything is fine, no slowdowns or lags, PS1 backups are also 100% fine (no video/cinematic stuttering) and, of course, original ps2 games are no problem too
I have a NTSC/U 77001 silver slim ps2, the games are burned with imgburn at 4x (even tried 2x too) on a verbatim DVD-R disc (good media).
Some examples are : Kuon, Haunting Ground, Obscure, Michigan : Report from Hell, these have intro videos at the beginning (that you can skip with Start, after the game loads fine)
Yea I don't know as I do most of my gaming now either through usb or smb. Not sure if there is a work around at all for said video lag, maybe ask the psx-scene.com forum for help or insight

The mic is same, but I've been learning how to use Audacity to do editing to the raw voice and give it a different tone to it. You got some good ears!

No this method is for dvd based games only. I suppose if you find a guide to convert CD images to DVD images, then you are good to go.

1) No, as long as your ps2 compatible per the github and your laser is good at reading burnt discs.
2) No, my video is what I did from a new user standpoint.

i literally did everything exactly and somehow it didnt work for me. FreeDvdboot works i burned it onto a dvd-r and I put it on and it booted fine but i didnt add any homebrew to my ps2. could that be why my disc didnt work? also i used the windows disc burner idk if that detail would matter..
So FreeDVDBoot works, but using same blank disc and create self boot game it doesn't work? I don't know thats a new one for me. Could ask ps2-home.com for troubleshooting help.
Will that work if i dont do what you did on the 1st tutorial? I mean on a completely untouched ps2, if I patch the iso and burn it, then put it in a brand new untouched ps2. Will it play? Please answer
Depends if it is ESR compatible and how good the laser is. Try it.

I have NTSC games and NTSC console, so I never had a need to use PAL games on NTSC console or vice versa. Give it a try. Best to use PAL games on PAL PS2.
Do you know how i could use the esr patcher for a SCHP 39001 (2.12U)? What files from github do i have to add to the payload? i tried by using some video_tf files. It recognizes the cd but when i load it it gives me the message "TV system doesnt match"

Maybe its time to find a used ps2 console that is freedvdboot compatible...or for your fat system look into FHDB which is the hard drive version of FMCB for internal drive

It's probably a dual layer disc game. Use DVD+R DL.
You have to use a DVD R DL and patch the game with toxic patcher first then do the freedvdboot method

Dual layer DVD is used on originals for these sorts of games, so I assume you would also need to burn a dual layer DVD if you can find/have one
Search if the game had a split dvd5 version, Modders did one for Yakuza 2 and Xenosaga for example

Id say this method is far superior. You can just put the disc in a retail console and it'll play. It doesn't get much simpler than that.

@@TAMPATLBLACK the exploit is dependant on your dvd drive firmware version. Last time I heard all slims are supported. Just check out the freedvdboot GitHub to learn how to identify which firmware you have.

There is a method to convert CD games to DVD format. I don't have any CD games to experiment yet, I'll do some research.

What brand dvd -r disc are you guys using? I have tried using my verbatim dvd +r and I think verbatim dvd -r disc. Both wont read when I go to load them from the ps2 browser. I only have two speeds to burn at 4x and 8x, so I been burning at 4x
What is the dvd player version? Sometimes the laser of the ps2 age may have a factor here too unfortunately.

I have 3.11U and same model and it works here with DVD-R. I'm using this Sony brand no issues. I guess every laser is different.
Project Phoenix Media I used to use Sony brand dvd -r for burning patched esr disc games, so maybe I just need to try using Sony brand again. Because I remember they worked fine.

well that's an easy question if your DVD player is compatible with CTurt's exploits(3.04 3.10 3.11)then you're good to go doesn't matter what model your ps2 slim is mine is SCPH-90004 too and for the question of where you can get games it's piracy you know but i will tell you cdromance is a good website and coolrom is a good website too

Does the regular freedvdboot work on your console? If it is supposed to and it doesn't, either the disc, laser, or something else is going on, and you may need to make a github ticket.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia yeah freedvdboot 3.11 works on my console man, selfbooting backups didnt work for me because the pay load is 3.10-3.11 hybrid, you should test it out for your 90k series
My 90k laser is flaky on me so I can't test it like I used to. It used to read hybrid disc fine and then next moment i doesn't. My 7k ps2 slim works fine each time.

Something like that, but this assumes your DVD player version on your ps2 slim (and upcoming ps2 fat) is compatible with freedvdboot. If yes, then self boot games should also work.

Self boot ps1 games is not a thing that I know of, get PSX Launcher with FMCB or use popstater, or do a modchip.

I only play NTSC games on my NTSC console, so if you want to try a different region game try it. Playing with OPL is better as it doesn't care about those region differences.
