I haven't tried it yet, but would be careful as it could reflect the laser back at itself, maybe laser marking spray paint would work. If you wanted colour engraving, you could cut out a template/vinyl sheet and brush/sandblast just the areas to be etched to rough up the surface slightly
You can get a rotary roller to laser etch round objects, that connects to the machine and replaces the y axis movement. They're mostly used to personalise tumblers and glasses

Is it only good for flat surfaces? For instance, can you etch on a tube?

i would not wear these while welding, it could be dangerous when sweat is involved.
