The gentle, almost intimate character of the Japanese incenses makes for perfect enjoyment in my one bedroom apartment! I used to burn the stronger, more invasive Indian incenses often....and annoyed my neighbours to not end. But these more delicate confections are certainly worth investing in, if one is as addicted to incense as myself.
Hi, Gilbert Ross! Thanks for watching and commenting. The famous Horin series is a good representative of Shoyeido's quality. Horikawa seems to feature benzoin, a sweet ambery scent. You might get similar enjoyment from Moss Garden (Nokiba), which is cheaper, I think, or Golden Pavilion (Kin Kaku), which is a bit spicier.
Wow. I'm on the cusp of this path but the costs are frightening. Translucent Path appears to be more like $27/stick in CAD! To make matters worse, my wife is sensitive to basically all smells, so incense is now like a guilty pleasure for the garage, along with the colognes I had been making from the likes of vetiver, oud, sandalwood, etc. Thanks for the video and the insights.
Im into japanese incense since 2 years now. I am from germany and importing sandal or agarwood isnt always easy cause of CITES and nature protection and toll laws. But i was able to get a bundle of 15 11 cm sticks of shoyeidos sho-kaku and its overwhelming and interesting. Today was first time i smelled kyara. Thanks for your videos. I enjoy them much and a happy new year from germany.
Hapy New Year to you as well, Schwarzromanitker! I am a big fan of the Shoyeido high-end products--but they are so expenseive! anyway, thanks for watchig and commenting.
My favourite from Shoyeido is Circle (en-mei) and a less expensive version of that is Emerald Awareness (green box), because it doesn't have any sweet floral scent.
Thanks for watching, Catnip! Circle is a very good one--White Cloud seems similar, but less expensive! Also, Gozan (Five Mountains?) is also a good one with similar vibe. I haven't tried Emerald Awareness.
I enjoy Fuin sandalwood cheaper and natural. I also have Byakudan , packaged in a paulownia box around 20 sticks came to 60 bucks. I collect sandalwoods and a agarwoods in raw form. I hardly ever burn them. I do burn sometimes using soradaki method. it's like moh method but without mica plate. I must say if I'm going to shell out cash for kyara then I would get it in raw form to appreciate it in a moh method.
+tsuzumist yes the japanese are very thorough with the quality of their incense. Even the woods they sell have been procured and stored perhaps years before they hit the market. It is difficult to obtain authentic agarwood but japanese companies have a passion for incense and are honest. I've seen bad agarwoods so I can differentiate. I've never found a source that sells true mysore sandalwood. But dhiatsu and baiedo have it. huge difference between mysore heartwood and white sandalwood or Australian or Hawaiian which are the new sources. but because they have stored so much people can still obtain. it took some time to transist to the subtlety of Japanese incense but we'll worth it. I'm Christian but the Buddhists revere agarwood sandalwood and clove together as well as turmeric and borneol camphor, but mainly the former 3. and agarwoods definitely can transport you even heal you.
George Simos Yes, that is true. Those woods come from south/southeast Asia. Legend has it that a long time ago (1000 years?) a big piece of agarwood washed up on the shore in Kobe or somewhere. No one knew what it was, so they burned it on a bonfire to get rid of it, and suddenly there was an overwhelmingly beautiful smell!
+tsuzumist Kyara is still available in thin slices. But I'm searching for a chunk of green kyara. I don't think it is going to be easy to find. funny thing is even if I do find it i might smolder a small piece one day but I don't know the day. just like the kodo koh ceremony is about listening to koh, maybe if I find a piece I'll listen to it tell me when to smolder it.
I have browsed these incenses online for years but have not yet gotten these as they are so expensive, watching this video makes me wish that the smell of these burning would come though my computer monitor. This is kind of teasing me. :)
+Schlepmeister Yes, these are only going to get more expensive. They are also going to disappear someday so you might want to get some while it is still available.
Yes, I bought some Shoyeidos from Essence of the Ages. I got the Myoho Eternity sampler, the Go Un Five Clouds sampler, and the Shoyeido premium sampler. My first transaction with that site, but no problems. If you go to Japan, the prices are much lower. But you have to buy a ticket to get there!
As i'm burning some of shoyeido's daily series (it's a pretty normal day) i'd like to say that i really like the sound of Minorien's FU-in kyara ryugen sticks and you might like them too.
+Dafoodmaster Sorry I'm so late in replying! Yes, the Kyara Ryugen sounds good, and I will probably try to get some in the future. I like the rest of the Fu-in series as well.
Great video tsuzumist! I'll be looking forward for more videos. The English name of the top of the line Shoyeido incense is 'translucent path'. I have never tried it so lucky you! Buying it from outside Japan it's more like $10/stick. I am in love with a shoyeido incense from the horn series called horikawa or river path. Absolutely fantastic. Round, deep and mellow. Keep it coming
Hello, Damon! Thanks for your comment! It would be nice if the fragrance could come through the computer, I hope somebody is working on that! In the meantime, I will try to post more reviews.
Yes, not only beginners! If I want to enjoy Koh En or Koh Shi Boku, I close the doors and windows and turn off the hvac. Usually I break off only and inch or so, and hold it in my hand to burn it. When it gets too short, I lay it on the ash bed. So, I will burn one stick at least three times. That gives your nose a chance to tune into it. This is true for Sho Kun as well. On the other hand, Kokonoe is a bit more user friendly. I bought a large anniversary box and enjoy burning it freely.
On the Shoyeido web site there is a tab called 'aromatic woods and incense tools.' There you will find ash. Also, you can go to the website Japan Incense and click on 'Sachet/Granulated/Kneaded/Ceremony.' You will find ash there as well. Both sites have lots of great Japanese incense as well! Good luck!
1. Kaze no sho by Gyokushodo 2. Sho Ran Koh by Kyukyodo 3. Seifu/Fresh Breeze by Shoyeido 4. Fuin Jinkoh by Minorien 5. Kokonoe Koh by Baieido These are all from my most-burned group. I ranked them by smell. This means that Kaze no Sho has the best smell, but I don't necessarily burn that one the most (beause of the cost).
Hi, Cordelia! Thanks for watching! The incense holder is 'tile' type. I think it was included in a box of incense I bought many years ago. I found some similar ones here: www.shoyeido.com/category/decorative-porcelain-tiles/1
can anybody please tell me how to get my incense started? It is supposed to be laid down lengthwise over ash. I do not have any ash, is there anything else I can use
Do not use incense when you have pets . The smell is extremely aggressive to most of them and it can literally kill pets like rats , mice , and other rodents due to complication in their respiratory system organs. So be very careful please people. I am a vet and i get a lot of customers who bring their sick pets to me and the hair reeks of incense , so the diagnosis is always very easy / There are especially a lot of people who associate cats and rats and the esoteric feel of incense . They don't go together !!! Incense and pets don't go together . The human nose has about 5 million olfactory receptors, . cats have between 45 million to 80 million receptors, dogs have between 149 million and 300 million receptors. Imagine the agony .
No problem , Tsuzumist . Your videos and channel are excellent . And i am a big user of incense . I have lived 25 years in Japan and married to a Japanese (another vet) who studied Kodo for maybe 20 years , so incense is a part of our life . Which is we are always cautious about it . Though i must say the incense used in Kodo where aromatic wood is just warmed up and not burned or lit , is by far the least aggressive to my opinion . We have countless pets so incense is reserved to only one room where pets are not allowed , not that they'd deliberately try to enter anyway, and never around rodent as it literally suffocates them .

Thanks for watching, Sabrina!
Me too, I burn about 5 a day, I think a need an intervention.
japanese incense are not light if you invest in higher end incense because they have less of herbs and more of agarwood or sandlewood

I love Shoyeido, I especially love the Horin series, Horikawa is my fav too! Nice to know there are other lovers of fine scents!
Thanks for watching and commenting, Jennifer! In the Horin line, may favorites are Tenpyo and Genroku.
I'm developing an expensive habit - Misho as a daily burn. It's wonderful stuff, but the bank probably doesn't agree...
I will soon try Baieidos koh shi boku ive heard it has really less amounts of spices and other additives.

thanks for watching! Maybe I can do another video sometime!
Oh yay! :) Happy Holidays!
how about in 2024? @@tsuzumist
Whered you get the nice candel holder? I finally just bought some of this incense. waiting on it in the mail.
Hey, Patrick! Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy it!
Looks like an NK holder from their 'book' range.
I think you showed a box of baieidos finest in another video.
Hello, Damon! Thanks for your comment! It would be nice if the fragrance could come through the computer, I hope somebody is working on that! In the meantime, I will try to post more reviews.
I know this comment is late but you should do regular incense reviews. It’s something missing on this website
Thanks for watching! I hope to do more videos soon.
wow that is expensive,, wow,,,, must be some goooood shyytttttt mane
Also i believe koh en is also not for beginners to get all nuances.

A layer of salt should work. Or, you can order a small bag of ash from an on-line retailer for just a few dollars.
Great holder!!!
